Why book when the travel restrictions were in place and at the time of booking it was obvious you couldn't go, if the venue is open and its the travel restrictions stopping the trip its unlikely you will get refunded.

We all know these situations are complicated and everyone needs to be sensible but think you're being a bit harsh. We don't know when he booked, might have been when travel was allowed, might not.
Why are lakes taking bookings, given the present situation? Not sure it's entirely fair to be taking bookings while restrictions are in place.
I'm booking nothing until there is some clarity around vaccination passports.

Read the post, he says they booked last week but I do agree fisheries should be advising on the travel guidelines especially the overseas ones as they know full well the situation. OP's hope the venue does the right thing and refunds but doing the right thing seems to be a thing of the past.

To be honest unless you have been living under a rock you should know travel guidelines too and I dont think that is down to the fishery to tell you.

No. They booked early last year for the last week in April this year. Having paid what is described as a substantial deposit I would require a confirmed rearranged date sometime later this year before I paid another penny.

Come MAY, Travel restrictions will be lifted by the UK government. Now, that begs a question as to whether the EU countries will.
im due out in September, so i guess im slightly more lucky in terms of time frame for things to settle down

Ah... I read it as he's booked to fish last week of April this year, not he booked last week. Maybe a comma or 2 needed?!

Our group had a similar situation. Booked last year and paid deposit for last week of April this year. Balance was due 10 weeks before travel. Lake proprietors contacted us early Feb and advised they would not be requesting balance until travel guidance was confirmed. They contacted us again this week after confirming original week had been cancelled due to restrictions and offered several new dates. We chose same date next year and balance is due 10 weeks before that date. Cannot ask for better service. I certainly would not pay any balance without a confirmed new date.

Goose, whilst I might be wrong I think his trip is the last week April 2021 not that he booked it last week. He does say he paid the deposit early 2020 so may have been before the first lockdown.

Agreed, the OP hasn't made it to clear but he's definitely saying he's booked on to fish the last week in April and paid the deposit early last year
You'd like to think they would move the dates seeing as there are enforced travel restrictions at the moment. Like the first lockdown a lot of venues refunded/moved bookings as travel wasn't allowed. When the 2 week quarantine was brought in a couple of mates asked if they could move their bookings for Cretelakes as they couldn't do the quarantine on return. Cretelakes basically said tough, either pay the remainder of the balance and go or lose their deposit. Their argument was there are no travel restrictions and the lakes are open
I definitely wouldn't be handing over another penny until a new date had been agreed. If they won't move dates or refund you then I'd be claiming on your travel insurance. I don't think you would have to much trouble with your insurance claim as the trip was paid for before the pandemic started?

Insurers would be unlikely to pay out in these circumstances, a) the holiday provider has a duty to offer a refund or replacement, (which he is) and b) cancellation due to Covid arising out of international travel bans is now excluded on most policies.
Personally I wouldn't be paying the balance now, bang out of order asking for it!

Wouldn't that only be excluded on new/post Covid policies Matt? A lot of upcoming trips would of been booked before Covid was even a thing so seems a bit harsh to exclude any claims for any lost monies for trips booked pre Covid?
Could understand if you'd booked, from say, March 2020 up til now that any Covid related claims wouldn't be looked at
