Just adding some balance. It's not a fair comparison with Daiwa/Shimano because they've been minimising weight for generations of reels. The fact is they simply wouldn't put out a big pit weighing this much in the £300 + bracket.
I'm not saying the Penn's are bad reels, far from it, but they are decades behind Shimano and Daiwa on the weight front.
If that's not important to you crack on. If it is then it's worth noting.

Daiwa ISO (new black) £450 520 grams
Can't find anything between those two price-wise apart form the Cult Tournies which are a 40 year old design
Shimano Ultegra Ci4 £230 540 grams

Of course it's a fair comparison. And baring in mind I repleced my first penns with daiwa entoh with an rrp of £300+ and weighing 601g, found them to be inferior so got rid and got more penns which low and behold weigh.... 600g.
Weight isn't a big issue for carp reels anyway, they spend most of their time on banks ticks and lighter reels make no difference to casting or feel when playing fish, people just convince themselves it does

However it's an indisputable fact that weight IS important to many people and reel manufacturers have made weight reduction a primary design objective since the year dot.
The Penn's are clearly very good reels in the sub £200 class. But if you're paying double that then I think it's reasonable to expect a substantial weight reduction. Otherwise the major reel manufacturers have got things very badly wrong all these years.

I paid something like £350 for my Daiwa reels and they weigh about 500 grams, so nearly 200 grams less (old Daiwa ISO).
I personally wouldn't consider a 700 grams reels at any price.
And before anyone tells me how to spend my money, don't!

And yet as I just said you don't necessarily get that (pointless) weight saving... They are a brilliant reel regardless of what price bracket they are in. Of I hadn't messed up ordering the reel seats on my rods I'd still have a set, they are so so much better than the emblems I've had to replace them with.
And no, my opinions are just that, same as yours are. Although you seemed to state that more expensive reels are lighter which I just proved ain't the case....

The penn 7000 are 640, 8000 are 715g. I've always been a value for money shopper so penns everyday for me.
Didn't say anything of the sort so don't bother getting your back up.

Anyway the crux of the debate here is whether the weight of a reel is important or not.
If you want budget value then crack on, these are clearly a good buy. Others are happy to put a price on performance, be that perceived or otherwise.

Seems like on penns webpage they're 680 like you say. The first black version (the ones I own) are 642 but that info is on mystic parts website so not sure on accuracy.

Performance is key for me, hence selling off the £300 daiwas and going back to the just over £100 penns. They performed way better, nothing to do with price tag.

I've just weighed one, with a spool on, full of 15lb mono. 643g.
I agree with IP, subtle weight changes are irrelevant and to class them as a budget reel, tbh, is a little ignorant. I have 2 mates who sold their Techniums for serious cash, both replaced them with Penns. Both say they are better reels. They're not fishing puddles either, long range on Rockford and Spinnaker, and both seriously experienced with masses of big fish under their belts. The Penns are great. End of.

The Penns are not budget value mate,they are just amazing value for money.As you know i have had loads of different reels over the last few years and the Penns are better than them all.If weight is a massive issue then fair enough but I can't see its a massive issue for most.I have sold my power aero's already,just felt like another cheap **** put together shimano reel like the black mgs I didn't like either.Im now waiting for my Daiwa Basia 19 scw qd to come in stock,if I don't like them then I'm having the Penns 100%
