The nuts aren't they mate? I dont understand the weight being an issue for some, as they are better reels than many which are lighter

I think a lot would depend on the rod, some superlight rods would feel wrong with heavy reels, whereas I'm using the heaviest centrepin I could find on a heavy ish 15ft float rod.
Saying lighter is better is wrong, as is saying weight doesn't matter, but how many of us get the chance to try a load of reels on the rods we'll be using to see what feels best?

Obviously with float rods it's a bigger factor, but we are talking carp rods with reels that spend most of their time sat on banks ticks, not in your hand.

Yeh of course, but in loads of what rod threads I've seen lots of comments on x rod being tip heavy and others disagreeing, probably down to the one poster using lighter reels.
I agree it wouldn't be a big consideration on carp rods for me tho

I take your point that heavier reels are often stronger and better made but fishing/ casting requirements will also influence people's reasoning on reel weight.
With a light carp rod weighing say 200 g even a reel weighing 500g changes the feel and balance dramatically. I fish small venues and normally need a short accurate cast, close as possible to an island for example. I find my accuracy deteriorates if I use my heavier reels so I'm firmly in the lightweight camp.
Not sure about some of the modern reels but I've reels 30 years old and with regular maintenance have never had a problem with them, again it depends what you want them to do.

If that was aimed at my post you obviously misunderstood what I was saying.
My purpose was to answer a question and explain why some people prefer and use lighter reels and that for some uses they will last an acceptable length of time, heavy, top of the range, “built like a tank” reels are not always necessary.
I never said my light weight reels were the best but that my 30 year old shimano reels are perfectly suitable for what I use them for and any extra weight would be detrimental for me. Basically “horses for courses”
If you disagree please explain why I would need heavy big pit reels on a lightweight carp rod to cast a few metres in a 2 acre pond.

Wasn't aimed at you mate. Was a general comment about opinions on this forum. Generally based on what people are currently using, being what the recommend. Tournies is the one that gets me. I have a set I use regularly, they are workshorses, and I can chuck them about, but they are pretty cack reels.

I have had some good info on here but I belong to a few forums and generally you're right, be it cars, chainsaws or fishing tackle people do tend to recommend what they have, irrespective of whether it's the best for its intended use and budget. Human nature I guess.

Anyone using the ESP compacts? 590grms 2 spools and two drag adjusters rapid and fine can get 3 + 1000mtrs of line for £419 sheets seems reasonable if the reels are half about.

I have a pair on some short rods and have been very impressed. So much so I'm getting a third to go on my 3.25lb tv rods I'm having build.
Feel nice and solid and am impressed various features (Spare spool, no need for backing, two drag knobs).
I've got a set on the emblem 35's on my 3.5 tc rods and really liked them (though only used once) but the second spare spool being deeper is completely wasted on me.
