Thats given me so much confidence using the gear i have but to get on the specimen lake they say use minimum 15lb line whats ur thoughts on that surely they dont come check the line do they ? Im looking to go this weekend for a 24 hour on specimen

A decent 12lb breaks over stated weight, I've tested mine and knot strength is nearly 18. Was only done tied with figure of 8 loops onto my weighing scales, done it 3 time and about the same each snap!

It's just a basic idea, I recon that tying knots you use regularly creates the weakest point.

I've just watched(for the second time) the Thinking Tackle podcast with Simon Scott. Towards the end he recounts the tale of how he caught Mary from Wraysbury at 52lb on 12lb line and hooklink. It's 3 hours long but if you haven't seen it you really should.

LOL post 15. Had an 18 lb carp on 3lb line, luncheon meat, fishing for tench. The sound of my drag brought the "serious carper" who'd never bothered to talk around to my swim. A good friendship developed from that time on and having been hooked, the local tackle shop began to profit from my obsession.

Surely this a wind up?
When I was a nipper I caught a 24lb mirror (1994) on 6lb mainline and 2lb hooklink with a size 16 match hook and a superglue 8mm halibut pellet on a float fished 2ft deep spraying out micro pellets that just sink
I also had a 23lb mirror freelined 5lb line straight through size 16 drennan sqeetcorn hook and single grain of corn 2 foot off the bank. Used to watch them coming in and picking out each individual piece of corn and leaving the one with the hook in.. thats where my obsession started...
Back then on the commercials you couldn't buy a bite with anything over 6lb as mainline.. This was with a 1.75tc float rod, the rod takes all the lunges.
I spent years and years trying to get my head around catching big fish with thicker line and big hooks, baring in mind my younger years, it just seemed alien. As said its casting the extra distance and the substrate your fishing over that causes the problems. No doubt I wouldn't have landed those fish with 3.5tc rods on that gear

I've only ever used 12lb line, daiwa sensor to be precise, and had fish to 25lb comfortably on it
