I thought about it and then put a standard lead into practice.
So many variables and the fact a fish really is a fish I gave up 30 years ago. Pleased you tried it, it's kinda fun we have all tried one thing or another during our periods of development and no doubt we will continue and that's it in a bit shell for me the greatest gift is that what ever you have done in the past that was successful doesn't mean it will be again although a lot of times it is however the point being don't remain static.

NO Waste of time IMO
after my test of spraying leads with a fluorescent pink paint I decided its just for the anglers confidence if the fish knew what a lead was they would be uncatchable we credit them with far more intelligence than they have

many years ago in those secretive days we picked up a whisper that replacing leads with the glass pendants from light fittings was a great edge .... we tried it .... it wasn't.
Tried allsorts over the years ... my conclusion is Carp don't seem fussed about leads.
To be fair it's nice to use things that you have made yourself and I dread to think how much lead we are dumping into our lakes.
I popped a fishspy on a popular gravel spot on a well known pit and dropped leads were visible. how many must be hidden in the silt?

I agree with the comments "we credit them with far more intelligence than they have", but, when they take the freebies on the surface and leave the hook bait....you have to wonder sometimes.

I once fished a popular day ticket on a social with my mates and got chatting to the bloke in the next swim, really nice fella, anyway, we were talking all things rigs and edges like you do. He brought his right hand rod in to show me something special that he was using...
... he had got an old stick from the branch of some kind of tree that sunk, it was around 8 inches long, he had drilled it out down the centre and threaded his rig through it, in essence, a lead, a stick with a 2inch pop up coming out of the end of it, hows that for camo

I've done that or similar for surface fishing, fish on the
top, me without a float, what a great idea....think I blanked
as well.

I have used sticks as a floater controller long time ago, used to fasten them on with float rubbers, looked fantastic. Only reason I stopped, you had to go through one of the rubbers twice with the line if that makes sense, otherwise it would slide down the line when I casted out, down side is when you got a fish, could mess the line up a bit
