Unfortunately even the most peacefully intended protest can be spoiled by the mindless few who will hijack it for their own desire for violence and vandalism.

If I was on a protest and it turned violent i'd walk away. If every non violent person done that then the police would be left with a small minority to deal with, but for some reason people who are usually sensible feel the need to get involved, I've never understood that.

As for your anecdote- so it's ok for the big policeman to punch someone out?

It's the law, you can use reasonable force that is proportional to the circumstances. Same as anybody in the land, if you are attacked you can defend yourself. If your on your property then it's disproportional, meaning if you were attacked and feared for your life, well, you could virtually get away with killing them!

I prefer the motto 'to serve and protect' over 'don't mess or we'll **** you up'

I guess we could come to some agreement around that

I don't condone all these riots, it's wrong and a lot of it for me is down to self discipline. Somebody is going to get seriously hurt or worse, as long as it's somebody who deserves it, then that's fair game to me, an innocent bystander or somebody who's job it is to uphold the law, that's out of order for me

We are going to end up in a proper mess if we are not careful. When I look at this country some of the antics are shameful and pathetic, like spoilt kids ****ing rioting. You know, all the freedom and privileges that we have compared to other countries, it's pretty poor isn't it over here, still not enough, ****ing idiots

And while I pretty much agree with mal, the reason restrictions on ‘protests' need addressing is because of this quote.
As a teacher Mal, you must have given the lecture on one or two spoiling it for everyone else.. Same principle, the authority needs to stand their ground and implement the punishment. Successive lessons/terms/years/teachers/governments may well reverse it, but the class/public learn a valuable lesson in doing what the **** you are told
I'm not defending this bill, I haven't read it.. But there has to be change because peaceful protest is not just holding up the rush hour if somebody's mum dies waiting in traffic in an ambulance!
I'm sure the bill makes threats of long prison sentences, not smacking people in the mouth?
It's not about helping your fellow man if by gluing or tying yourself to something stupid there is a succession of ****. It's selfish and childish most of the time.
Personally, I find protests ridiculous.. I'd be embarrassed being associated with 90% of those you see at these things. I'm a people person, I just dislike lots of people
Give me peace, love and fruit punch. I'm all for it!
But if a ‘protestor' even put a dent in my car or van, let alone hurt my family I would execute them where they stood

Part of my day to day is the much lesser risk of some testosterone fuelled Y10 getting mouthy and calling me a ****. Should I be showing him who is boss by resorting to the same thing? If there's a fight at break, should we send in the ex military tech teacher to beat them up? No.

Not beat them up but discipline them yes, you see Mal I believe that's a little part of the problem discipline in schools has even succumb to the fact that these kids nowadays know they can get away with it it's where these little darlings start to learn that there are no harsh consequences even the parents have no forms of discipline, I know it was different times being brought up and educated in the 70's early 80's but we had parents and teachers who could use punishments as a deterrent lots of them.

What have we/you got now, oh Timmy you do that again and its ten minutes time out on the naughty step for you my boy, I had the cane once in 1979 at primary school from an ex army corporal headmaster at the ripe old age of eight for starting a fight with a friend who had kicked my football over the school wall into the factory next door with no chance of getting it back, I never had it again didn't want too and when I got home and told my parents the old man responded with sounds like you deserved it and clipped me around the ear for good measure.

It all depends on the direction you want society to move in.

Towards the Scandinavian model, where human rights are recognised, kids don't get hit, and people generally get along pretty well and are happy? Or towards Taliban controlled parts of Afghanistan, where people are strung up from lamp posts for looking at someone the wrong way.

This new bill seeks to outlaw protests that cause annoyance or are too loud? Eh?

You may think it's no big deal and will help clear Greta's mates from the road, but next time it could be something you want to protest about. Bob's Low Traffic Area shambles, for example. Why on earth should people like him be prevented from protesting about the scheme if they want to.

There are endless examples of society only moving forward as the result of protests which caused lots of annoyance to others. Civil rights and suffrage for example. Perhaps governments should take notice before big protests are necessary, but almost outlawing them is a dodgy step backwards for any democracy.

I actually went on 3 demonstrations last September/October.
We weren't allowed to march but we were allowed to gather with social distancing. The police told us that under covid restrictions we could be told to disperse without notice. We told them we planned to gather for no more than 2 hours on each occasion and then disperse promptly. The police allowed us to do our thing and stood out of the way. When we finished each session I personally went up to them and thanked them and they seemed to appreciate it, I think they actually agreed with our cause but not could not say.
The point I'm trying to make is if you demo peacefully you can still get your point across.

If it had turned violent all that would have happen is make the idiots implemented these traffic schemes the good guys.

Scandinavian model,

Forget that. Our culture is worlds apart from theirs. They have a lot of self discipline where as we do not!

Simple for me. If people feel so strongly about something where they want to protest against something, crack on. Inflicting pain, suffering on others and smashing personal or public property is out of order and there needs a line drawing somewhere along the line. That's why I maintain, if you want to act like a ****, be prepared to be treated like one, simple

My thoughts entirely Tinhead

The point I'm trying to make is if you demo peacefully you can still get your point across

As soon as it's violence and rioting, forget it, the whole point of the protest has been lost, ****ing idiots

put some plain clothed crowd snatchers amongst any more protests. anyone playing up, drag em down an alley and give them a dig. I for one say let the po po smash the **** out of them. just sending out our police with just a shield is a joke. and water cannon the scruffy gits.

The point is, there are plenty of laws which already exist under which the idiots kicking off the other day can be arrested and prosecuted.

protests that cause annoyance or are too loud

I forgot to say we were LOUD!
Police said keep off the roads, fair enough we did, but we stood on the kerb and encourage motorists to sound their horns, which they did and as they were stuck in gridlock the sound was deafening, it was really funny.
What wasn't funny was seeing two ambulances getting delayed. (covered on the other thread)

Did the protests achieve anything? Partially yes

All about public perception for me and the press and now any clown with a camera phone laps it up

I'm up for that Rich, snatch squads, drag the ****s out, give them some shoe, in the van, let the music continue to play

Imagine the media and the public outcry from the snowflakes when somebody is being a **** and they get some baton, so out of order

****ing human rights don't come into it, if I was there and been a **** I would deserve what I got, I am sick of this fluffy nice to have image, next time there is a football riot they should send out the snowflakes with a feather duster to stop the violence

Any pub that requires you to show whether you've had a vacation or not deserves to be boycotted in my opinion

Straight out of the Trump team playbook. Only Johnson is more worrying as he has all but one of the media barons onside. Trump only had one
