Probably for another thread though I believe the whole future of car ownership is changing, due to costs the drive to lower emissions and trying to reclaim our streets - can we really expect everyone to be able to afford to buy one from 2030 ?
I just can't see there being enough accessible charge points / stations (I know they are integrating into street lamps - which already get abused / monopolized by some drivers in London. And in China one brand has a facility where you simply swap out the flat battery for a charged one) or similar for hydrogen,
My view is that within the next 10 years in city's it will be the norm to not own a car but rent it when necessary probably via a app

It's not an idea. I've met Carlos Tavares a couple of times so read what he says as the most profitable auto manufacturing group with an affordable too the masses business model.
Forget FABS (although I know it's your pet Chinese default argument) it's a busted flush with China as the article states.

The article you mentioned talked about all sorts - seems a bit hopeful with a degree of flag flying and all too late, should have happened years ago but western business enjoyed the profit margins.
At the end of the day the Chinese are very competitive with their labour costs and state of the art factories built on western money - have you ever visited China ?
I've been many times on business it's not paddy fields and poorly educated folk as you seem to think it is.
I'm not happy with it, though that's the reality.

I see JLR is cutting jobs as they are still struggling with component shortages, meanwhile Chinese car manufacturers continue to build more cars.
I'm not sure by the ‘FABs' comment and your reference in the article but if it's in regards to the semiconductors made in the FABs (TSMC mainly) come from western semiconductor component manufacturers like NXP, TI, Infineon, Renesas and others for the automotive market and are still all very constrained.., there is very little from Chinese semiconductor companies used by Western car manufacturers.
More layoffs will follow in the eurozone automotive market sadly due to the slowdown.

I've always read Non Carp but can't remember reading about electric/non owner stuff.
I can't see this ban on ICE in 2030 happening myself. Whoever's in charge at the time will find a reason to water it down, the rest of the world not following and not enough charging points being the obvious reasons.
I don't think anyone can say for sure who'll be in power in 2030 but it doesn't sound like a vote winner to me.
That might make me sound like some sort of petrol head, climate change denier but that's not the case, If you knew me you'd know I'm quite green.

Sometimes you have to make your targets just out of reach.
Making them easy to achieve is ok as a back slapping exercise and to add to your portfolio of other easy achievements but more progress is often achieved not by reaching the target but trying your best to and learning from your mistakes on the way.
I was reading about ICE manufacturers not bothering to develop them any further, I'm not sure if that's a good idea. It may be better for the environment for use to have smaller cleaner ICE engines than EV's that are manufactured and charged by fossil fuels.
Unfortunately vehicles seem to be getting bigger and bigger (have you seen the size of the latest Nissan Micra?)and there's too many people who still see their vehicles as status symbols, even if the owners get into debt about it and secretly complain how much it costs to run them
Personally I finding driving boring and a chore and I'm quite happy to drive an old modest car slowly in the inside lane and not have to worry about it as I've got the funds to replace it when the time comes.

It may have more power but as for driving dynamics forget it..And also cost 10k more !
I dread to think what it will be like driving round my syndicate track with that additional weight during these colder wetter months.

I can't give mortgage advice other than to say when interest rates go up and you pay them, when they drop keep on paying the higher rate. It knocked 10 years off my mortgage doing that.

The anti car lobby who obviously don't want you to have a car whatever your personal and mobility circumstances are now saying tyre and brake linings particles are now a major health hazard.
So are there any carpers on here who are going to completely give up their cars?
