Im looking to buy a spod rod and reel setup for a reservoir that requires casting and baiting around 120/150 yards.
Im certainly no caster and currently only really fish venues that require distances around 80/100yards.
Casting is certainly something I need to develop but I was going to buy a spod setup in the new year as I fish a venue every spring that produces well for me to spoming bait over my usual stick/catty approach.
I read a review in carpology on best spod rods in certain categories and they recommend the Sonik SK-47 for under £100. I was going to buy this and pair with the Sonik Turbo spod 14000 reel. Im aware Spomb/Fox have just released the dedicated spomb x reel but personally I don't feel if I paired that with the Spomb x rod it would be of any more benefit to myself as an inexperienced long distancer caster.
Since looking at little more I can get a Daiwa crosscast spod reel 45 scw and Daiwa super spod rod setup for around £160 which is similar money the Sonik was going to cost. Im not really fussed on the branding as its a tool not a fasion statement shall we say, but I did think the Dawia was probably better value for the money?
I was also hoping to fish this with a braid straight through such as Berkley whiplash and not use a shock leader, is this achievable?

Baiting up accurately at those kind of distances will be very hard to do with a cheaper setup. Cheap spod rods don't cast too well in my experience when going any sort of distance. They are fine for 80 yards or so, maybe a little more. But 150 is a good chuck which will require something better quality like an aviator to do accurately and without ruining your arms.

I use the Century C2D Spod Rod and it is very forgiving and made for spodding accurately at range. Reel wise I use the old Daiwa Emblem spod reel, they don't make them anymore though.
Hopefully a set up that I won't have to replace as it suits me and my casting abilities.

Like the other two have said, the right kit does make a big difference. I had a Sonik S&M rod and reel....I just couldn't get the distances .... I upgraded to a CFX 12ft spod rod and an Emblem.... Don't, get me wrong, it's not a walk in the park but it makes a massive difference in being able to consistently hit the clip at range....just my opinion!
I'm not caster either,.can comfortably hit 25 wraps but 28 probably my limit tbh. I bought a freespirit spm rod and really struggled with it,.heavy, cumbersome and couldn't cast as far with it as my current spod rod which is a jrc extreme shuttle which is a joy to use compared!

I don't mind spending more if necessary, what i didn't want to do was buy fashion over function shall we say. I don't or probably won't use it a great deal and when i do id imagine majority of the times its going to be 100yards or less but that said I guess its a tool ill always have for when I need it.

For a spod reel you won't go wrong with the daiwa , it's a very good reel for the job

I did the same - not a huge upgrade but went from a Greys GT spod to a Freespirit CTX one. And changed reels to a Penn 8000 spod reel. The difference was night and day.

That Crosscast Spod reel is decent. As others have said, you need a capable rod (and a whole lot more technique wise) to go with it.
Yes definitely need to work on my casting! Would i be right in thinking the Dawia Super Spod wouldn't be ideal combination with the reel?

I had a freespirit lrs hard work ended up with a shimano tx extreme. So much lighter and easy to get 25 wraps and a lot more with a bit of effort.

Reminds me of the early days of spodding.
I was using the harrison rocketeer, easy to put a bend in it, and i could chuck/lob a home made full sized mastic tube spod about 70 yards.
I had a try with my mates century big Bertha, much stiffer but you felt the weight and couldn't compress the rod so it was a slog to hit 70 yards with it.

Mastic spod, sounds like a rod breaker 😅 sounds good for short range tho.
