Stinking hook bait storage (30 posts / 3,315 views)

Since I've started using the scent from hell hook baits, I can't contain the smell.

They stink everything out, including the car for days and days, and I always like to load up my kit in the house before going, and my mrs hates it. The bait bucket stinks.

I've tried smell proof cooking bags, tough glassware with rubber seals etc.

Anyone got any experience of stopping stinking hook baits from getting on everything?

I'm not bothered about keeping the whole pot together, even if I had 8 or 9 hookbaits in something that kept the smell contained, then that would be a start.

Cheers in advance.

You're not alone Jack, I asked a similar Q not long ago, in my case it's DNA S7 which is actually quite a pleasant smell, but I've also had it with secret agent. I'm more worried about what's getting out as in it's no longer as potent. I'm sure in certain cases it's a volatile oil or flavour on a volatile solvent but some of them are just buggers.

My S7 booster is now in a glass dropper jar, the type Nutrabaits essential oils came in and whilst that worked for them it doesn't work for S7. I'm not sure if it's getting through the actual seal instead of by passing it, or throught the bulb, I've considered making my own seals to see. I then put it in water tight lock & lock, no, few days later is past that. My Crayfish wafters now smell of S7, not a bad thing but not what I intended
The S7 plastic bottle it comes in sucks in within about a week of getting it, and ordering from a tackle shop it comes like that.

There are bigger 3rd world problems but it's annoying! and in the case of SFH

Cheers mate, I already have, and tbh they've not touched the sides of the smell.

Hi Vossy,

Thank you for the below mate, I can see how the dropper would definitely help with liquid.

And like what you end your post with, it is the mere fact that it is SFH that is the game changer too - I swear down I've never smelt anything so strong.

And yes, it is what's getting out that is a concern too hey, we want our baits to be at their optimum.

I'm completely flummoxed on this one, especially as I'm happy to put them in something smaller with just a few baits.

I left one on the rod after a session two weeks ago - took it off the rod and the whole holdall still reeks.

Any reason you can't leave them in a sealed bin in the garden ?

I don't have a solution to your problem but maybe ask yourself " do I actually need to use such a disgusting flavour ? " Over the decades, I've made baits using a selection of similar flavours such as Monster Crab, Atlantic Prawn, Krill, Shellfish and indeed Scent from Hell. None of them were actually better than baits made with much more acceptable flavours such as Scopex, Strawberry, Peach, Pineapple, Passion Fruit, Tutti Frutti, Bunspice, Vanilla Banana, etc, etc. You shouldn't have to have a nuclear bunker to store your bait Lol.

Wheres the fun in that

Thinking about this last night, proper rubber seals should work. I can't remember our kilner jars ever letting smells out...hmm.

Maybe try a "nest " of rubber sealed Tupperware tubs, with each one fitting in a slightly larger one, Russian doll style. Could use 2, 3 or even 4 without weight being a problem. Worth a try to avoid a divorce 😂

I've used scent from hell in the past didn't actually think it was that bad, very underwhelmed when I got them. Good bait but no where near as bad as made out. Anyway I stored mine under the stairs on shelving I put up to store my Hookbaits never smelt them once and no one ever commented on it so don't no why your having this problem

some batches of them mustn't be as bad as others i have some in the garage from many years ago they are in the tub inside another tub in a drawer in the garage, you just have to walk past the drawer to get a whiff of them!

They are a bait i didn't do very well on and when fished over other beds of boilies caught far more on a like for like bait

I agree with this, there is probably a variation on smell intensity in batches, maybe I got a particularly strong tub. Trust me, they are the strongest vilest smelling bait I've ever come across - but they do the business (for me).

Are you sure?
