Enjoying the thread on uncaught carp got me thinking about Redmire in the early days . What was the feeling back then and now as to what the pool held ? Were the biggest carp caught or were there fish that remained uncaught , be interesting to here people thoughts , thanks .

I absolutely loved this place ever since I was a kid all ways dreamed of the monsters that were in there,my life ambition was to fish it and I did in 2011 I can say I've done it now I don't care if it doesn't hold anything of size anymore it's redmire,even though I blanked as it was January.
On the big fish not wasn't there a story of a black mirror or a big uncaught fish in there about 8 years ago before they had to do all the work on the pool or do people think it was publicity to keep an interest in it.

Mate i fished it 5 years on the run 3 weeks per year 2010-2015 the place was so run down and the biggest fish was low 20 so yes it was rubbish the stock had been compromised. I t had also been drained and de silted in the early 2000s .The people running it and you all know who it was where more interested in getting pissed all the time.Hopefully the place will be run much better in the future .Would have love to have fished it in the 60s early 70s as this was the golden period.
The booking system was also a load of crap you had to ring on a day in january , no one ever got through until after 4pm because they did,nt answer the phone until then to give out winter dates . I had 2 weeks in summer for 5 years and a week every winter and i never rang once !
If you watch the redmire forever dvd it shows a 30 cant remember who caught it but it was so heavily spawned it looked like a football and on the dvd it says i have caught the biggest fish in redmire and that was true but it died shortly after.

Had a fantastic week there one summer, didn't get it via the phone either
The place didn't get much of a closed season either.

I used the phone way did take ages and to be fair to les he honoured the dates due to the weekend I booked with a work colleague it was frozen

Ironically Redmire doesnt really do it for me, I can appreciate its importance in angling, but it probably wouldnt even get into my top 10 of places I'd like to fish.

I remember the Eddie Price photo , how big did they think that fish might have been ? It's somewhere that has always fascinated me but I'm not sure whether I'd like to fish there and spoil those memories . Having said that there are plenty of people who say it is still a magical place that makes the hair on your neck stand up , so who knows . I wonder in such a small pool whether there was too many that were uncaught.

Feel exactly the same. Would have loved to have had a crack in its hey day but can't help feeling it's trading on a glory era that has long gone

It's still a lovely place to fish. Especially if you book it as an exclusive. We had four of us on when I fished it. A great social. BBQs. Lots of laughter. Plus it really felt like old school proper fishing. Go off stalking for a few hours. Quiet, peaceful, beautiful place to spend a few days.

I'm sure it is absolutely beautiful mate but if there isn't a fella next to me smashing the water to a foam with a Deeper, one opposite spombing 10kgs out for his quick overnighter, a baitboat wiping my lines out at 3am, a fella and his big mouth Mrs making YouTube videos and beards and vapes and tattoos and VW Transporters as far as the eye can see, I'm just not interested...

totally agree. I was there in December, and there again in June this year. Loved our december week, hoping the june week will be even better

I remember the Eddie Price shot in the book, it's like one of those grainy old UFO images you cant really say for sure I think the best of them got caught over the years and dont think there was anything bigger than what was known about.
A fascinating water for what it was and where it was and for the fish that it produced but that was due to the fact the Galician strain carp it received in the 30's a hardy steady slow growing strain with good longevity given they were left to get on with it for a good many years unmolested by any angling pressure or modern farming practice and the rise in mister otter, I would say its hay day was from the 50's to the 90's from an era where carp were though un-catchable to a period in time where carp fishing started booming then the next 20 years it was ridden for its worth and driven into the ground with anglers paying good money for the privilege of it.
Hopefully going forward following all the works undertaken to de-silt and fence it and adjustments to the local farming practices it can once again hold big fish in the future but they will all be the offspring of pop rib simmos crossed with a local farmers koi from his pond, there hasn't been a Laney strain fish in that lake for years how they could claim that when they re-instated the pool and said that was all that was kept and re-introduced was and still is a farce there might be the smallest of chances that one or two made it through that's all I'm saying, and before anyone starts slating me Herefordshire and carp fishing is a small place if you've been around it long enough you know about some of the underhanded things that go on.
