About to pull the trigger and get three of these - going to use them primarily for pike fishing on large pits, so didn't want anything too special, just something robust that does the job.
Anyone have these reels? Any feedback good and bad?
Just want to sense check before I get them.

A lad I know has them, or should or I say had them. He's just got rid of them. One siezed up after a few nights use, and he kept having line get in behind the spool on a regular basis. He was less than impressed

Very impressed with mine. I should say though I've only had them a few months first impressions are good, especially for the price.
I paid about 110 a reel with a price match at GoOutdoors.
Can't say I've experienced any issues with line going behind the spool but in regards to seizing up, I guess only time will tell!

Great reels when fitted with felt washers but the worst reel I've ever used for line going behind the spool.

Agree with this 100% , felt washers make it much better but the line does go under the spool. which is a shame as apart from that cant fault them. such a shame because getting to point now I've had enough of it. i was thinking of possibly trying to modify them. get rid of line guard completely and put some rubber strips in the recess like other reels do. probably not worth the hassle and would also need to add some washers for line lay. if anyone does know of anything that can be done id love to know

Thanks for the feedback guys. Is the issue with line getting behind the spool happening when casting, reeling in or when preparing to cast or setting up the reel on the rests?
The reason for looking at these was the alternative I was looking at, the Ultegra 14000 XTD, had so many mixed reviews.
Making me re-think what to get. I already have custom Basias, but want some big pits for pike fishing that'll take the knocks and don't really want to spending too much. I get that a £150 reel won't be too amazing, but surely they'd be at least 'good'.

Had both reels, cant for the life of understand why they dont use decent guards to stop this happening,. IP mentioned the penns, ive never used them but lots say they great.
The Daiwas are super smooth and well balanced I had flouro on mine and it doesnt behave nicely on any spools . They do get line behind the spool especially flouro as its a bit springy.
Dare i say for the money a set of tournies 2nd hand, at least they have functioning line guards and can take a few knocks. but they are not loved by all...
To actually answer your question i think the line gets behind the spool mostly while the line is "loose" like when settling the rods in rests , I always keep a finger on it and you shouldnt have many problems.

Ive got 3 on my 10 footers and i actually quite like them
Just a heads up though.........line going behind the spool is the users fault
ive got 20lb x line on mine which is horrendous stuff but i dont think it has ever happened to me
my other sets of reels are both xsb mags so i actually find these excellent and have no issues with line behind the spool at all

Well you must be something really special then because it seems like it happens to everyone else
It is however the users fault but these are the worst I've ever experienced for it. It never happens to me when using or on the rests but happens all the time when the rod is propped up and re baiting.

Line behind the spool issues aside, I'm feeling OK about getting a set. Like I said, I only want them for piking on the pits and needed deep spools, as I'll be using a bait boat a fair bit - I have custom Basias for my carp distance work. It's all my fault anyway, as I had the old big baitrunners for pike fishing and sold them, doh.

I think you've made a good choice mate overall. one thing you definitely need to do is change the washers to the felt ones from Weston developments. game changer.
forgot to add I have folding handles on mine, which I much prefer for transportation. They are taken from the daiwa black emblem x 5000t

I just thought they looked a bit naff. I know it's not a reason for discounting them, but when I handled one in the shop, I just thought, I don't like this. I don't know what part/servicing availability would be like, I guess I just prefer to stick with Shimano or Daiwa. The only other brand I use is ABU, but that's for multipliers and I am currently swapping them all out for Shimano Tranx reels.
Appreciate the tip on the washers, I'd planned to do that based on advice given.
