Ci4+ 5500 or Ci4+ 14000 on a Shimano Tribal 12ft 3lb tc rod?

Unless you're trying to hit the max distance possible with that rod I would go for the 5500 size, much more balanced, IMO.

I have ci4+ 5500 on my 3.25s so I would definitely use them on a set of 3lbs, unless your fishing huge distances I wouldn't bother with the 14000, I fish upto 120/140 with my 5500 and they are fine for that
Terry Edmonds tested both of them together, on the time of watching the video I thought he said he got a further distance with the bigger reel, but I was mistaken he actually said he casted about the same, so if distance is a thought then don't worry. I haven't used either but I would imagine that the 5500 would fit better.

I use the Ci4 5500 on my 12ft 3.25 and my 10ft 3lb and think they are fine on both.

That all depends on line diameter with a thin line there will be very little difference but the thicker the mono gets then the spool size does make a difference

Sorry I wasn't that specific. Terry was testing with a thin 10lb line on the vid, I do know now that a bigger spool makes a difference but as you mentioned with a thicker line, such as if you were not allowed to use leaders or very light lines (in carp fishing terms)

So what sort of rod would you start using a 14000 reel on then? I presumed the general consensous was a 12 ft rod and upwards

I use my 14000's on my 3.5 tc's . Previously to that I used 10000 sized reels (same size as 14000) on my 3.25's.

I would choose the 5500 size over the bigger sizes every time no mater what rod you have got. They are the perfect sized reel for line up to 0.35 dia, you dont need anything else. If your fishing at extreme range then you want lower diameter line anyway for maximum distance so theres no need for the 14000 reels for me at all. I think people only buy the huge egg whisk 14000's as they think they look cool. They look daft and unbalanced imo.

More and more venues have min diameter and leader bans, try fishing at 140 with line of. 40mm and the bigger spool help a lot and 5500 reels look odd and un balanced on 13ft distance rods like trebs, hi's 200, c2d ect.

I don't think it has to be as thick as 0.4mm i remember comparing 16lb pro clear 0.34mm on 5500 spools and my tech spools and there was a distinct increase in difference with the tech reel plus the retrieve was lot easier, i also tried it with 15lb esp and the increase in distance with the tech was more again.
