Can anyone recommend some decent walkie talkies for me and my mates to use when fishing?
Most sites I work on main contractors use Motorola pretty durable designs have to be to put up with being covered in *****, dropped left out in the rain.

Yep - the Cobra ones mentioned below are pretty good for the money - got mine from Maplin before they went tits up - I too have a set of 4 - bought them for the kids when camping, but have used them on the bank a couple of times
That said, do you really need walkie talkies these days ? ....when I got mine there werent really too many unlimited tariffs for mobiles. Nowadays you're better off with a mobile surely ? ...you can do group FaceTime calls too or send recorded voice messages. Struggling to think when I'd use mine again - other than for the kids to mess about with. ...We did use them in the cars going down to cornwall a couple of years ago, but it got rather annoying when the kids discovered the call button.

Unlimited airtime on mobiles makes a big difference but I still think there is a place for walkie talkies in certain situations.
I'm thinking of a group of anglers fishing the same lake for long periods and leaving the walkie talkies on 24hours a day all tuned into the same channel. It's what a group of us have done in the past and will do in the future. Not for a proper conversation but just to exchange the odd non essential remark, a bit of banter, maybe tell a joke. Of course if it's important or personal you get your mobile out.
We use cheap Binatones not too dissimilar from the ones in my link and they do the job.

I found the biggest differences between radios
cheap ones are harder on battery life not very shock resistant or water resistant
this changes with good quality radios Cobra Midland and Motorola are ALL very good and IMO worth the bit extra cash

I know it's down to how much time you are actually talking on them but 18 hours doesn't sound a long time to me.
Granted we don't chat all day but the cheapies that we use and are powered by 3xAAA's last 2 to 3 days when left on
24/7

YES I have Cobras very similar ones they are great UP TO 5km range
the extreme have a 1 mile range hence a heavier usage

I bought a pair of these so me and the daughter could play spies.
I use walkie talkies quite often at work so know a bit about them.
The cheapo cobra are quite decent except it has a very annoying roger bleep that i cannot turn off.
They have rechargeable batteries that you can charge in the handset using a usb.
