I'm thinking of getting a rod custom built and I've been looking at the different options for reel seats. I really like the look of the ALPS seats but are they practical in that they are comfortable, they fit any reel and they don't scratch up too easily. Any advice appreciated. Thanks

I got some on my barbel rods, and have regretted it ever since. look the part, but wish i hadn't bothered in all honesty.

I looked at getting some built by Mark Tunley, but was put off by the fact that the guarantee doesn't include rods snapping at the reel seat when built with Alps seats. Not sure if other builders have the same terms but there's a reason it's there!

Very Happy with mine, shiney stainless steel jobby and very blingy.
As already said not everbody likes them and seem to have an opinion on them one way or another.
A lot of swim visitors ask about them by the way

I had them on a set of rods that i had custom built. Had to send them back in the end as the reel seats didnt match and the build quality was terrible, but thats another story.
Apparently the gun smoke ones are difficult to colour match to eachother. Not sure on the validity of this but was told by 2 rod builders.
When i used the rods on the one occassion it was winter, and one thing to nare in mind with them is being metal, they get really cold. I opted against them when i reordered the rods and went for fujis

Great from a cosmetic view. But... are very cold to touch in winter and very hot in summer when exposed to hot sunlight. They also add a fair bit to the cost for no real advantage IMO.
I had some rods built by Kev Clayton last year and had the fuji gunsmoke real seats on them.
Your money, your choice at the end of the day.

I've heard that reported many a time regarding ALPs seats and to be honest I have never, ever noticed them being either any hotter or colder than my DPS

Never heard of rods snapping , ones i have built customers love them , I personally dont like them , they are as stated cold in winter and hard to keep clean , i must admit they look nice but i will stick with my fujis.

I've just bought a new set of custom Torrix TE's made by Vic Gibson and it was the first time I've ordered a set of ALPS reel seats, but I went for these Chrome Centra Lock Seats and must admit, I love them. Quality is right up there. I don't think you'll be dissatisfied one bit 👍
