Hi, i am looking at getting some new reels, what would people recommend for around £150 per reel? Thanks

Depends what lakes you generally fish but the Penn affinity would be a very good option

The carbon version is nearly 700g and that's a heavy reel to my mind.

I would have thought the carbon thing was a step to address the weight and iron out the only apparent flaw but seemingly not.

I respect some don't think weight matters but for some of us it does. 150g doesn't sound a lot but it's a big difference on a reel imo.

Is the carbon not just aesthetics? Apart from the ‘carbon infused rotor' cough cough (plastic)

Seems like it. Thought it would be a reference to the carbon (plastic) weight saving properties.

Obviously a very well thought after reel but won't rattle the big two at this weight.

You can get any of the fox rx range for that price

Shimano ultegra XTD 5500 (500 grams) are these good? I also don't like heavy reels, suffer from joint pains any weight I can save is a plus for me

Feels too heavy in the hand. I want to feel the fish/lead not the reel. Casting long is easier with a lighter reel too.

And to the original poster check out the Emcast 25A. Below budget and very nice versatile reels that do just about everything well.

I agree , casting/reeling/playing fish are all much more enjoyable with a lighter reel

Agree with Ian as usual on the Penns. The normal ones are light anyway, damn site lighter than my old Shimano Big Pits. Great reels for the price, well made, bulletproof, great line lay and sturdy clutch.

Looking at the shimano ultegra 14000, has decent reviews and not bad on price either
