Morning, I've recently joined a syndicate and the water depths range from 40ft to around 16ft.
I was wondering what the general rule is for clipping up your spomb to the depth your fishing? I know distance also makes a difference but I could do with someone with experience who has fished these depths to give me an idea.

Have a search on YouTube for a film by Fox (i think) with Lee Morris and Rob Hughes.
They were examining this very thing and it was quite good. Can't remember the exact depths but sure it was anything 10-15ft or under then not worth adding anything on to alllow for swing back.
They basically marked a square target zone on the lake bed and Rob was down there in a diving suit and they were trying to get the lead in the zone by adding/taking away half a wrap, quarter of a wrap etc

So many variables, wind being another. There is no exact calculation that can take account of all the variables so I just do what they say in the videos and not get to anal about it.
If I'm fishing somewhere near my chosen area than in most cases that's good enough for me

Definitely agree. There is an amazing amount of self delusion regarding accuracy. Too many variables to expect to work in inches. Maybe if you are on form a three foot circle at 50yds, 6 ft circle at 100yds and after that give it your best shot. Don't believe everything the "experts" say, stop worrying and enjoy your fishing.

Chuck a spod or whatever you are using out to the same as your rods
Take a step back and re chuck the spod to the same clip
Take a step to the left do it again
Take a step to the right do it again
Take another step back and repeat
Should cover any eventuality then.

Just involved in a post about spodding accurately over your baited rigs. Now there is many factors thrown into this. But for me this is the most practical way and most accurate. Something I always do over small bait items.
Try this, Wrap up your marker rod at 20 wraps. Mark the line with elastic just past the top eye.
Wind the braid on the reel, stand in your casting spot cast out hit the clip. Keep your rod in the same position you usually do. Feel it down, tighten up. Look where the elastic is 👍
However far inside the tip the marker elastic has come, is how far it's swung back towards you.
That gives a good mark how short to clip up your spod rod.
This also shows where the elastic should be on all your fishing rods. If it's not in the same place your rods are not accurate 👊
