I just received my first bivvy in the mail today from my local carp tackle importer. In setting it up, I noticed that the elastics in the two tent poles are frayed at the same joints, with one elastic frayed to the point that the protective nylon sheath is completely peeled back and the rubber of the elastic is fully exposed.
How necessary are these elastics in keeping the tent poles taut while the bivvy is erected? The ends of the poles look to be sealed with thread locker, so replacing the elastic looks to be out of the question.

Hi mate, not sure what bivvy you are talking about, but if it's alli poles, just replace with springs, cheap as chips off Fleebay

It's the JRC Cocoon 2G Shelter, and I'm not sure that I fully understand the idea behind replacing with springs. Can you elaborate? Poles are aluminum.

Trakker do some universal elastic. Basically an elastic with a prong each end u push into the pole. Bout a tenner for 5

On eBay tent pole springs, piece of cake to fit, they do different thickness springs depending pole diameter.

Does anyone know if these springs would work on something like the Trakker Tempest 100? Just thinking incase an elastic ever went I could possibly go this route.

Whilst you have had good advice regarding replacement and requirement of the elastics my first action would have been to contact the supplier and enquire as to their intentions of how they intend to remedy the situation considering you purchased a brand new item.

I agree with the post below, first thing is to complain to whoever you bought it from and see what they say. A brand new item should be perfect.
Worst case scenario at least you now know what can be done if the supplier will not offer any refund/swap
