I am thinking of using a combination of essential oils, in conjunction with one liquid flavouring, to coat/ soak into some unflavoured PJPU's this winter. The thing is I know how pokey they are and dont want to completely overdo it...whilst at the same time giving the baits a decent coating.
Any ideas? Thinking of taking 5ml of liquid flavouring and then adding drops of the EO? This will give a larger volume of 'glug' for the baits, rather than just a few drops of neat EO's....any suggestions?

maybe look for a couple of tried / tested ? A lot of older nutrabaits recipes had flav / oil combo's. e.g.
Strawberry & bergamot
peach and black pepper
Personally id go low level n-butyric with John baker plum. Will need thinning / diluting. Give John a call for his advice.

I posed a similar question a while back, which from memory, went off topic into the realms of “Carp can't detect oils/Oils in carp baits still work though”.
I raised the question because I remembered from an old Carp Bait video by Tim Paisley and some of the Nutrabaits guys, that at the end of the video when he interviewed Derek Stritton, Tim was using a bait that was heavily soaked in a combination of Black Pepper Essential Oil and Asafoetida Essential Oil. I was trying to find out if he might of been using this neat or like in Tim's book From the bivvy, he was using another oil as a base (in this case he used Soya oil to which he added his garlic mint EO blend and fished it @ 5mils/lb of bait but he neglected to mention the exact combination. I assume that this was because it went onto become the Nutrabaits UTCS Garlic mint).
Also in this book he mentions the recipe for what became the Nutrabaits UTCS Fruity special. He mentions that you can glug hook baits in this but he doesn't use any freebies as he reckoned that it was a bit over the top. The recipe is as follows:
Per lb of bait or as a glug as above
10mils Fish feed oil (no idea what this is)
10mils Nutramino
3mils Blackcurrant flavour (I assume he was using Nutrabaits)
2mils Tutti Frutti (Try Esterblend 12!) nb. In another book, (‘to catch a carp'I think) Tim tells the story of how he won the first Horseshoe lake match. He wrote that he knew Bob Bakers (Richworth) would be using their Tutti Frutti boilies, so he he got a bottle of their flavour and made an attractor blend using it which went on to become Nutrabaits UTCS Frutti Special as mentioned above.
1mil protaste (no idea what this is)
3mils Molasses
5drps Cassia Terpenes EO
3drps Fennel Oil EO
As for other EO combinations, the following are some of the blends that I know of. However these are all added to the bait at the mixing stage and not as a direct glug. I mention this simply as a guide. You might need to do a bit of experimenting - say a couple of baits in a pot with the neat flavour/EO combo, and then some in a more diluted form. I hope the following helps:
Per Lb of base mix unless sated otherwise:
10-12 drops Black pepper EO/ 2drps Asafoetida EO
3mils Tutti Frutti/10 drops Ylang Ylang EO (as per Tim Paisley ‘from the bivvy')
3mils Strawberry/4 drops Bergamont EO
1mil Black pepper EO/ Kg
2 drops Buchu EO/ 4 eggs (as per Frank Warwick)
Blackcurrant/10-12 drops Juniper Berry EO
I'm sure there are more combos out there. The previous poster mentioned JB Plum/n-butyric, you could also try JB Plum/Caprioic. Suggested dosage is 1mil Caprioic/500g base mix.

In the old days Tim used the garlic hoffels pearls but then switched to a garlic oil/soya oil mix of 100ml of soya oil to 10 drops of garlic oil. Shake and mix in a bottle then add 5ml of this liquid as this equates to 1/2 a drop pf garlic eo. I'm guessing this was the base for Nutrabaits Garlic Mint.
"Protaste" is/was a liquid sweetener made by Hutchy or Nash.

You mention in the first part of your post quoted above that the recipe below became the UTCS Fruit Special but in the paragraph under the recipe you say the the recipe is the UTCS Tutti Frutti Special?

Sorry for the confusion! Hopefully this will clear it up. The recipe is as quoted from Tim's first “From the bivvy” book. He calls it his fruity special. He makes no reference to which brand of the Tutti Frutti flavour he used other then in brackets try esterblend 12. To quote from the book “..I started fishing a banker attractor mix which I know will catch summer and winter from almost anywhere. This is the Fruity Special which I used when I won the Horseshoe match...”
In Tim's to catch a carp, he mentions the same horseshoe match in which he won using (which I'm assuming) the same blend. I will quote directly from the book:
“..I will give you an example of the thinking behind the bait I used to win the first Horshoe match in 1991, and I don't think I've revealed this before.
Bob Baker of Richworth had a couple of teams in the match, Bob being one of the anglers. Rightly or wrongly I guessed they would fish Richworth Tutti Fruttis as at least one of their baits. Tutti Fruttis are considered by many to be one of the most instant baits available. So I went and got a bottle of Richworth double strength Tutti Frutti flavour, made up a special attractor blend which including it, added it to a nutritional base, and included a taste additive. I figured most of the anglers fishing would consider ready-mades to be ideal for a two-day match, which they proved to be. Tuttis caught throughout the weekend, as did my bait. I don't know how significant the nutritional base of my bait was, but I caught a higher individual weight than any of the other teams.
After the match, I substituted the Nutrabaits Tutti-Frutti for the Richworth one and gave the recipe to Bill Cottam and Richard Skidmore of Nutrabaits. The mix is now their very successful Fruit Special.”
So his first version contained Richworth Tutti flavour, the second Nutrabaits Tutti, and a suggested third using Solar's E12.
Hope this helps and clears up the confusion!

You could try using a carrier like hemp oil mixed with the essential oils. Probably wouldn't mix well with ea based flavours though. Maybe adding an emulsifier would help it combine with the ea based flavourings. The easiest way of mixing them would be to roll your own hook baits and add them to the mix.

Forget about Essential oils a carp cannot detect them.
