Looking for opinions on what defines a leader.. I'm asking as my usual venue has a leader ban and I intend to use solid pva bags fished loop 2 loop. Obviously there's no point/chance of me using 2 foot or so of lead core etc,but would using approx 8-10 inches count as using a leader not just a convenient way of fishing the method? Looked into the Avid stem system but not only has it had some negative feedback it also appears to be discontinued.

You'll have to ask them mate. Some allow that, others do not.

no leader = mainline only to rig
no leader = mainline only to rig
If I can get a feel for peoples thoughts then I have a basis for arguing /discussing the case with bailiffs before I upset someone.

“No knot above the hooklink swivel” I think this works well as a no leader rule/definition.

For sure mate. I agree with the others regards a definition, no knots above the swivel. But the intent of the rule is safety which I do not believe is compromised using a tiny little length.

I fished a venue that had a no leader rule. When I actually asked the bailiff to explain it was clearly the lead-core element and that had no problem with lead-free leaders tied loop to loop... Worth asking

Hi. Leadfree/lead - core., all safe zone types are subject to the ban. Usual case of a few eejits misusing /abusing leaders fishing Into snags not upto causing problems
. If there's a no knot above the hooklink policy, surely even using something like an Avid stem system tied either direct or loop 2 loop then falls into this category?

Anything that is attached to the end of the line that is not part of the mainline before the rig or lead arrangement. So this would mean any line other than your mainline itself in one piece joined to the end of it along with shockleaders, leadcore, leadless hollow braids (that attach like leadcore but not a small piece that you have threaded your line through so mainline is under less pressure) & the plastic fuszed leaders(such as Korda & Nash ones).

How do you attach your hooklink any way other than heli style as the knot is going to be above the swivel that attaches it

If you are using anything other than a shock leader to take the force of a big chuck so using finer mainline to get additional yards, then you should ALWAYS be using the strongest mainline you can get away with. I will not use anything below 0.40mm with ANY type of leader that is not used as a shock leader & I will only use Helicopter arrangements with a leader regardless of how long just in case of the rare cut off the fish can lose the leader & only be towing a hooklink. Needless to say I will NEVER drop the lead on a heli setup either (no need to as the angle of pull from the rod and the fish is totally different to with an inline or leadclip in that you are not pulling the lead then the hooklink but in a direct contact with the lead itself with a heli unless you use a spliced ring to keep the hooklink away from the lead on chods which I do not do anymore as not needed IMHO)).

But the intent of the rule is safety which I do not believe is compromised using a tiny little length.
I agree that in the case of a short leader saftey isn't compromised. But, I fish a club water where there is a leader ban, not for fish safety per-sey, but to stop anglers casting to the horizon. Similarly - no braid, and min line diameter and no tapered lines either. The problem the committee had, wasn't so much the fishing at distance, but the fact you had to bait up from an out of bounds area if you were fishing at those extreme distances.
Not sure if its the same reason for the ban but might be something to consider if you are going to put forward an argument, just to make sure you cover all the possible angles.
Thing is, for this club in particular, they just don't like "carp anglers" - and no matter what you ask, and no matter how reasonable the suggestion might be, if you're labelled as a carp angler you may as well not bother.
