Hi all, not quite relevant for the time of year but this year i am going to be doing a winter campaign and looking for recommendations on some good boots? I have been looking at the hiking range of boots like the merrell thermo chill and the merrell moab speed 2. Anyone have any thoughts on these or any other recommendations welcome.

No boots will keep your feet warm if your not moving around, they need to be paired up with some decent merino wool socks and even then if it's really cold you'll struggle. I got some heated socks but now i'm using those stick on foot warmers, do the job just fine.

I have not been impressed by the grip of the Moab shoes and boots.
You might consider the Jack Wolfskin Everquest range. These are fur lined for warmth, include the Texapore waterproof membrane, but look and grip like standard hiking boots. Go up to large sizes (some models to UK size 15) and available via Amazon. Great reputation for robust build.

whatever happened to the old JRC? Field boots, I had a pair donkeys ago and whilst they were horrible to walk in they were warm enough to sit around in all day.
Sorrel Caribou snow boots keep my feet nice and warm.
Have a look at altberg boots. High quality gear made here in the UK. Great selection of specs from dessert to arctic.

Another vote for Jack Wolfskin. I've got the equivalent Everquest Texapore Mid M. They were called Polar Boots when I bought them a couple of years ago. The boots are bloody amazing. The best I've ever had.

Itturi cold wet weather boots, I find they come up small so I go a whole size up which leaves room for some decent wool socks without being a sqeeze.

Ive got the merrel moab 2 boots, not the best for winter use at all. Good boots though just not the best for warmth
Ive also got some grisport gamekeeper boots. They are higher than normal boots but are miles better for the cold.

I've got a pair of Scarpa Terrex that ive had for over 10 years and they're bullet proof. I don't just use them for fishing - they've seen mountains and festivals too.
