On the bank and my normally trusty Nash dot spod is failing me - it won't stay shut, keeps on opening mid-cast, and sometimes I can't even get it to close at all.
Thankfully I have a backup - got a Wolf Spider Competition in my bag to give it a go. Only issue is the darn thing isn't opening! Finding it does sometimes drop a few boilies but never the whole lot and often none at all.
Anyone have any ideas on how to get a dot spod to reliably close or get a Spider competition spod to reliably open?!!

All I could suggest is giving it a good washing out, I've sometimes had problems when using one with small seeds or pellets. Check the catch, it could have been bent or damaged, so not engaging properly.

The wolf competition is a complete waste of money unfortunately. When it does finally open it will close on the retrieve and will be like reeling in a house brick. I actually sent them a very polite message on their social media asking if I had a faulty item, without response I was quickly blocked presumably so I couldn't voice my findings to potential customers.

I've had the same which has stopped me using hemp based particle. Today using nothing but boilies and it's completely clean and washed out and it still won't stay shut. 70% of the time I can't get the catch to hold at all, and then if I do a light shake opens it. Can't see any reason for it. V odd.
Looks like I'll have to muddle along all weekend within catty range and buy a new set of spods when I'm back. Any tips on what to get?

The little catch on the lid might just need bending slightly,I did this with mine but now I only use a wolf spomb and find it the best I've used

It's the performance version I think,it's all black.Try bending the little catch up on your nash one so it clicks shut properly

Heated it up over my kettle and gave it a bend. Sorted it out. Only issue now is after about 5 spods I cracked it off. FML, the spod gods are not with me today!

The Wolf Performance is the best I have used to date. I fish a lot at 100 yards plus and got fed up with the Spombs opening up when giving it the beans, would happen on every 4th or 5th cast. Had similar issues with the Dot Spod either not closing properly or opening up.
The Performance isn't perfect, it can stay shut occasionally if you hit the clip and land it on it's side, but its the best of the bunch for me.

Is the Performance the same? Looks the same, where the Competition has different fins.

I think the end has to be flat to give enough resistance to pop the magnets when it hits the water. Agree that this is not ideal aerodynamics for distance, but at least it opens 9 times out of ten.

Just by means of an update, I bought myself a new dot spod and the wolf performance spod and trialled them out side by side over 48hrs.
The performance version is soooo much better than the smaller wolf competition spod, opens almost every time. While I still had the occasional failure to open, it was maybe 1/10 casts, rather than the 9/10 failures from the competition spod. I also found it flew much truer than the dot spod. Shot out like a bullet.
The dot spod is still very good but I think the wolf performance is better. While the dot spod opens almost every time on impact, it does occasionally open mid-air, and it also flies notably less true, wobbling through the air and so feels harder to reliably chuck long distances with accuracy.

I've only had the issue with the dot spod openin mid air if I'm only half filled with bollie, seems movement inside hitting the mech opens it , never had one open when full.
Just brought a dot spod air to have a play with too 🎯
