I've been looking to buy a set of Mags, but which are the best of the bunch, I'm leaning towards the xtb black mags but, are they the best of them?

Hated the XTB but love the XTD,for me the xtd feels much smoother and more robust.

I'm out now using my XTB black mags, and these with the XSB mags are the best I've ever used and I really can't see me buying another set of reels in my lifetime 👍

Of course i would take them but only with some smokey bacon crisps as not thar keen on cheese and onions. A pack if frazzles would be even better. I would then stick the reels straight on ebay and buy some proper reels.

I can't believe I'm still biting on this
but the reason they're still commanding very high prices on second hand platforms must be a reflection of the outrageously poor quality

I'd personally argue it's rare and quality. I can't comment on the XTD's because I don't own them but the idea of suggesting that the best selling technium reels ever made are rubbish is for the birds, imo.
It's also worth noting that mint second hand sets of xsb mags are fetching more than the cost of a brand new set of the current technium reels so does that mean these folks have all got a screw loose?
Quality is particular to the individual and imo those two sets are the best I've used.
I keep looking at the new SQ5 car to replace my 16 plate SQ5, and the new one is probably better but it doesn't mean my current car is crap.

Same as they do with the latest stuff because it's new and expensive but the xtd is the ugliest technium to date with its long ass and massive spool that nobody fishing in the UK needs.

I've had loads of different Techniums over the years and I'd say every single one of them has something annoying that makes them not 10/10 but that's probably the same with ALL ranges of reels.
I've currently got the 14000 XTC's and really like them, only thing letting them down for me is the Spool Clicker is rubbish, even changing for the Reel King ones is no good, the line clip gets in the way and feels like it sticks out too much and the Line Guard may as well not even be there as it does nothing.
If I had to pick one it'd probably be the 12000 Mgs XTB but with all the Chrome parts replaced for black and the spool cap replaced for the Ultegra ones... 😂
I really do like the look of the latest ones in silver though, shame about the big old booty on them!

I have the XTBs but have changed all the parts to black and absolutely love them!!
I have caught plenty of fish on them and they have never let me down.

To be honest even though I've owned techniums, basia,s ect I'm not a fan of big reels and still think my sal****er twin powers are superior to any big pit reel.

Agree with you there, the twin power, certates, stellas etc are in a different league altogether. I hate the huge basia, tech size reels which is why i still think the castizm is the perfect size for uk fishing.

the inners of the MgS reels were of better quality for the XSA, XSB and XTB models, after that it seems like the trend to save on the quality of the inside components was also applied to the later MgS models

True but because you like it does that make it the best ? To me the best will be the ones I like using that still perform like new after a decade or more of regular use and the only tec's I kept that long were the originals 10'k xt and they still look better than the new xtd which are massive and way over the top for UK carp fishing.

I agree with you that the latest techs and even basias are way to big. I still think the castizm size is the perfect size for every carp fishing situation you will ever encounter.

Thats just the thing all the reels I had before the latest tech mgs did not feel like they would last more than a few years.I could of had them serviced each year I guess but they just need feel robust or well made but the xtd mgs do

Have no idea why reels are getting bigger and bigger; the new mags are ridiculous, basia is not so bad because they have tiny bodies... think the reel manufacturers need to have a reset of what's needed in modern angling. This fad on making the drags faster and faster, oscillation slower and lower too.... power aeros would be spot if they were 10000 size and slow the drag up by about a whole turn; 3/4 clicks from free to locked up is stupid in my opinion.

My sal****er twin powers are well over a decade old and been used in sal****er as well as fresh and are good as new. They are super smooth and would easily land and UK carp . Problem is rods have also got more powerful for extreme range casting and most are to heavy to balance up nicely with these smaller reels but someone on here recommend the free spirit heavy water rods to me and they are fantastic rods that can fish under the tip to long range and pair up nicely with the twinpowers. I've sold all my carp rods and reels and this setup with my 12ft 2.25 TC will do all I need for carp and barbel fishing.

I hate that super slow oscillation on the shimano reels. Its a hindrance if anything and dosent serve any purpose other than making your line lay look all nice.

It definitely doesn't help distance casting, it just increases friction as the line is laying in coils directly next to each other. Does look nice tho!

Total fishing tackle had one of each size listed on the ebay shop with starting bids of £389 with free postage so i bid the starting bid preparing to mebees go to £500 but i was the only one who bid so got it for £389 which is probably the best fishing related bargain ive ever had. They still listed for £779 on tft's website.

They all seem to be from japan which worries me a bit if it got damaged and had to send it back. Just sold my shimano lunamis 7-35 which is probably the nicest rod ive ever owned but the genos is meant to be even better which it should be mind as its more than twice the price.
