I ordered a tag some weeks ago and it hasn't arrived for reasons which aren't clear. So it looks like I'll have to pay as I go through. What's the best way to approach the booths when by yourself?

There is not much you can do other than stop slightly short and wide of paying terminal and run around the front of the car.

It really isn't a problem. Just park up leaving enough clearance to get to the pay point and stroll round, pay and then drive off. No rush and nothing to get stressed about. I have done it hundreds of times without any issues.

I ordered a tag a few weeks back that arrived yesterday for a September trip, will be the first time in 30 years going on my own (normally two or more of us) and I didn't fancy running around the vehicles at the toll booths! Whilst a relatively easy process ordering one all communication has been in French (there's a surprise!) and I can only say thank god for google translate!

Just be aware that the tolls don't appear to take all cards! Just got back from France and they refused to take my Jaja credit card (it's what used to be the Post Office credit card) the card worked fine everywhere else it was just the toll booths that had an issue with it?
My debit card worked fine through the tolls but whole point of taking the Jaja card was there's no foreign currency transaction fee with that

Ensure you pay with a credit card - NOT a debit card. There have been problems in the past where debit cards have been cloned off the toll system in France. At least with a credit card, it's not your money and you have easier recourse.

My card has been cloned on 2 out of the last 3 trips. Cash only from now on! I undo my seat belt as i enter the tolls and climb across and lean out the window. Much easier in a Renault Trafic than smaller vehicles. Just put your belt back on before exiting the tolls.
