I've never used putty before but I've ordered some to use for pop ups for the very first time. Do I add it to the line where I want it to float so it pins that part down? Also do I take it off of the line every session when I've finished fishing and add some new each time? I'm clearly clueless..

When a rig is ready for the bin save the putty and use it for the next. Most putty can be used over and over again.

And always remember.. Putty never goes on or stays on as well as it does in the carp video's.. :0)

I've ordered "Nash cling on" so I'm hoping it can be used over and over again.

It can, personally I'd of gone for kryston but the nash stuff does stick well.
It depends as well how you use it, if you use large lumps be sure to create a smooth transition from the line to the widest part of the piece of putty, to minimalise the resistance of water impact. a piece moulded into the shape of a split shot will invariably grip less than an olivette shape.

If it's just to sink a Hooklink i use Plasticine. Pop ups i use a small shot as well.

I used the Korda dark matter and found it dog poo, heard kryston heavy metal had changed but re ordered and tbh still really happy with it. I always re use putty, swivels, well pretty much anything I can

I've found the thinking anglers putty to be very good . It's very tacky so sticks to Fluoro etc very well

Mate of mine introduced me to Aptus tackle putty. Not cheap but best I've used apart from the old heavy metal Kryston which is on a par. Bonus point crays seem not to love it.

So do I put a lead shot on my braid line and cover that with the putty or do I just use putty?

Are you using a multi rig .. if so find a shot that that is enough to sink
The pop up slowly possibly a BB .. put this by the knot that is created by the loop you formed to attach your hook to .... Or you could use the other option and mould putty to the knot a little at a time until it just sinks the poo up slowly. I prefer to do this as I like my baits to gently sink and nestle on top of the weed .

Ol´skool Kryston Heavy Metal if going down the putty route, or Nu´skool tungsten beads
I prefer putty, tbh, and stays on till it´s time to scrap the rig.
