Looking at getting some new rods for me (Harrison Torrix 3.25lb Custom built 50mm butt Kigan 3D ring) and my son (Free Spirit CTX 3.25lb).
Just wondering which reels are best suited for these rods. Previously had Daiwa Tournament S 5000T's on my chimeras and absolutely loved them (unfortunately had all my gear nicked a few years back). Obviously been looking at some of the basias but are they really that good or are the Tournament S 5000T's still up to the job considering they must have been around for almost 30 years.
For my son I've been looking at the new Emblems at £150 each and would like any opinions or other recommendations.
Are there any deals about also for these reals.

I have the emblems , previously had penn affinity. The Penn's are a far better reel

Have Torrix 3.25lb 12footers and use Daiwa 5000T's on them feel the balance perfectly and do everything expected of them. Yes there are smoother reels out there but none have the character. There's a reason they have been around so long.

Ah cool. Thanks for that. I was a bit reluctant to spend £500 on basias if the Tournaments were still regarded so highly. Did you get the line clip upgraded and the drag done or are you finding clipping up OK with the existing clip (it looks like it would cause snap offs).
Also, what sort of distances are you casting with the torrix and 5000T's paired up. Just hoping the Torrix are good for playing fish as I see mixed views on them.

I've had Daiwa Infinity X BR's on my Torrix's (3.25's) since they first came out, rods and reels still going strong.
No plans to change anything any time soon. In fact, I'd quite happily buy the same setup again.
The only thing I've done to my reels in this time is changed the washers to carbon ones about 5 years ago.
FWIW, my son still uses my Dad's old 5000's which must be getting on for 20 years old and they're sill a great reel also.
Are the newer ones built "the same"? I can't answer that I'm afraid.

Thanks mate. I did look at the Infinity X BR's when they very first came out but went with the 5000T's as I didn't think I'd ever use the bait runner facility. Do you use the bait runner much or do you ever use just the clutch loose? How do you find the Torrix when playing fish.

Thanks. I'll take a look at them. Got to admit I've seen quite a few positives on Penn reels lately. I take it the Affinity 3's are the latest one's out.

I always stick the baitrunner on having used Shimanos previously. It was what I was used ot at the time. Now I seem to have a multitude of rod/reel combinations, some with BR and some with QD so chop and change a bit really.
Regarding the Torrix, I love them. Playing fish is fine, a joy IMO.
I had them custom built by Chris Orme what seems like donkeys years ago now, might have been 12-14 back, I can't recall exactly. The best bit about them is they have Claret and Blue Whipping along with "West Ham til I Die" written on them and the Hammers crest so I'm not selling them to a Spurs fan any time soon.
In fact, it does somewhat limit the secondhand value so I get this done to all my custom rods and that stops me selling them.
My Mrs got me a pair of Bob Gill custom Torrix barbel rods for my 50th to match the others and they truly are things of beauty. I'd happily put them in the living room and stare at them for ages.
Back to the carp rods, they chuck as far as I need to (or further than I'll ever be able to) and I've never had any hook pulls that I could put down to being too stiff, I find them rather lush. Others have a different opinion but my Ballistas were like broom handles compared to these bad boys so they got relegated to "Thames rods" before I flogged them, stupidly..
They cost a lot of cash considering what you can buy these days for less than £100 but in my opinion they've been worth every penny. "cost per use" and all that.
Harrison would probably be my go to blank for a new custom rod but in all honesty. over the years I've never really had a bad fishing rod. I've recently got a little Korum 11ft barbel rod just for the odd hour on a small nearby river and to be fair, for the money it's a cracking little rod. I'm sitting here now with a little 6ft cork handled dwarf, 1lb TC on my desk to take to a little stream now and again and for the money, can't fault it. I think I've developed a rod addiction as I have far too many, if that's possible?

All my previous rods were made by him and I loved the way he numbers off the blanks so they can't get mixed up. I always get my own name put on the underside of the blank so like your West Ham personal touch, it doesn't help with resale, but then again I had no intension of selling them (I hope the thieving gits rot in hell).
I think I'll save my money and choose either to get the 5000T's again or the Infinity 's. Sounds like a very nice pairing. 👍

Lol they'd probably have the same effect a crucifix has on a vampire.
I've a couple of YAC stalkers that Vic built and they're finished off lovely and he rebuilt my original Ballisters as well.

Yeah, Vic builds lovely rods. However, whilst I don't want to sound negative, he must be atleast 70 by now and I'm just wondering (more hoping) that he's still up there with his work. I don't really want to use anyone else as I've had some lovely rods from him. I wouldn't even know who else to use other than say Kev Clayton.

Why not give Yateley Angling a tinkle and see if they're still using VG? Ruth wouldn't let her rods out if they weren't top notch.

I must agree with your choice on Vic, he's now built me two sets of Torrix TE's, and I couldn't ever part with them. Bloke is a legend, I'd use him again before his wife demands he puts his tools down.

Feel really guilty having any concerns but it may be my last set I get custom built and as my other two sets he made got nicked, I'd really like another set made by him beforehe retires. It didn't even cross my mind he could be that old now (mind you I'm 51 now 😂

I have upgraded the line clip and am using the Weston developments one. Also have upgraded to carbon washers. The drag as standard however is amazing. As for max distance I am unsure but have comfortably fished 30wraps (120yards) with the above set up. I have never had an issue when playing fish with it. Like any rod when the fish is under the rod tip it's all about just taking your time. I definitely have no regrets having purchased this set up.

I bought my last set of 12-6 Torrix TE's from him (top picture, older set TE's below) about 12 months ago, it was about an 8 week build wait which drove me insane waiting at the time but when I looked again a few months back I think the wait was nearer 3 months, then it was suspended and I think he is now back to 12-14 weeks.
I do feel privileged to own two sets of his rods, and personally I wouldn't hesitate and get that order placed before you loose the chance.

That's a lovely setup you have there. Is that the Matrix Innovations Compact Patriot Pod? Been looking at that myself as I previously had the Steve Neville FO range and his pod which he doesn't do any more.
