Hi has anyone else used the new ish daiwa gold spool scw 45 reels and had any problems? I ask because the other day I cast one out and when I went to retrieve it the reel jammed up. To retrieve all the line i had to cut it and attach to another reel. Anyway the line guard had come out of its runner and to get it to work properly again I had to force the line guard back in place among the flimsy housings. Since then another reel has done the same thing twice and I no longer have any faith in these reels. Is there anything I can do about this problem or failing that anyone want to buy 4 of them?

Take them back to where you purchased them. I've not had that problem yet, but not overly impressed

I had the same thing happen with a double figure Barbel on the end a few weeks ago. I could backwind but couldn't reel in. Luckily I had a mate there, we took the spool off and sorted it whilst the fish was pulling away, no idea how I ended up landing it!

This is strange, had plenty on mine including catfish over 120lb with no issues.

my 35scw been fine, must be same internals pretty much. not quite 120lb but I didn't land a 50lb cat on it which absolutely ruined me and weeded me up and that reel must have took some serious torque during that fight

Side by side they don't feel anything like each other so no idea about the internals Tbh, like I said in another thread a lad I know has had allsorts of probs with the 35 versions and has got rid

id be surprised if they aren't exactly same internals, just with a longer shaft. after all same reel just 45mm spool right

The body is slightly smaller iirc on the 35s so maybe but maybe not. Either way, I'd still rather have my old Penn's back lol

The only issue here I suspect is that you need to make sure the line guard and spool are correctly aligned and settled into the rotor correctly.
Mine have been totally faultless but when I took the spool off to switch it over it was a bit tricky to make sure it bedded down correctly.
Maybe worth double checking before returning it.....

I'm getting my modified 35's back today. No more line guard..be interesting to see how they perform now without it. Them line guard systems are flawed. As someone mentioned before only the tournie and old emblem style ones are actually OK. Guess too expensive now to use that style on the reels now. People moan about the tournie coffee grinder caused by its line guard system but I've owned alot of tournies and not once had an issue with line going behind spool and obviously rotor cannot get jammed either. Bring back old style line guard I say!

Of times. I had a feeling it was when line had got behind the spool. It let me cast out then jammed when I starting reeling in. On one occasion the clip that goes in the runner snapped off. Daiwa fixed it free of charge. I've not had any issues for a few months now. Probably more likely to happen after a respool.

Thanks for the replies it seems I'm not alone in experiencing this problem. Interested to know what modifications could be done to sort this out. It happened to me again yesterday on the 3rd reel so they have all done it now.

You can get the line guard removed and replaced with brushes or rubber guards in the line guard recess. However does squeak and make more noise as the spool touches the guards. Mine are rubber ones. Brushes maybe less noisy when reeling

Iv not had this issue at all on my black n red ones ?
Had no issues at all .
Hope that doesn't happen to mine . I like the reels .

not a good sign if you have to modify a reel to get them to work reliably, I had a play with them and they look nice but to me the clutch is way to fast, a couple of clicks from loose to locked up

Mine got done by faf customz. Haven't used them yet, will feedback sat eve after my session. It's 20 quid per reel.

Sounds like you want and should get the 5000t conversion. All you need to do is unscrew the reel seat, put the emblem in the recycling bin and screw on a tournament. Costs between 100 and 250 quid

I've sort of already done that. I considered the emblems as a spare set of reels but I really liked them so starting using them as main reels. That is until this problem occured now I wish I'd used the money for more tournament 5000ts.

That's great but my problem wasnt line going under the spool on the emblems it was the line guard slipping out the runner and jamming up.

But this also gets rid the line guard. You take it off to be replaced by rubber guards
