Hi All,

I'm thinking about buying a set of rods for a small water and ideally wanted a set of retractable ones due to space saving.

Having not used any before I just wondered what people could recommend ?

I have seen the Nash scopes before but it seems every company now do them.

Nash dwarf 2020 models 7 rings very good rods.

I was in the same boat last month. A lot of the waters I'm fishing I don't need my 12-6 Torrix's and I'd been promising myself a set of 10ft Sonik Xtractors, then I started looking at their Insurgent range and one night browsing the web as you do I noticed the 10ft Nash Scope Black Op's which I found irresistible - what a beautiful rod.

Not certain I could afford over £900 for three I decided to flog on my old Basiair 45 QD's which had been sat around for a couple of years since I picked up a couple of sets of Techniums.

With the money I was able to buy the 10ft 3.5 TC Black Op's Scopes and the R10 Transporter.

They are a bit tarty with 50mm Vortex rings and matt black Alps waveform seats but they are bl**dy lovely.

Appreciate though that there are others much cheaper but I was just really taken with the look of the Black Op's and the reviews I read all sounded really positive and I'm well happy my new set.

I have 10ft sonik xtractors 3.25tc, great for the price, I had the mark 1 dwarfs and don't intend on going back personally.

I can cast just a touch over 100 yards and nice to play fish on still.

The sonik xtractor range is value for money there at the right price I've seen the insurgent lovely rod ad doing 2.75 for £100 wouldn't touch Nash rods overpriced

The new 2020 models from Nash (especially the Dwarfs with 7 rings) are one of the better 10ft Retractable rods, Yes Sonik's are good too but I 100% choose the Dwarf over the Extractors/insurgents.


And why do so many want 3.25/3.50lb for a 10ft rod?

Test curve numbers mean absolutely nothing without knowing the action.

People expect high test curve 10ft rods to be like a broom stick but in my experience are far from it.

No, i dont think you got what i mean.

The test curve number doesnt mean anything without knowong the action. You could have a solid metal bar with a quiver tip on the end and call it a 1lb test curve.

Most 3.5 lb 10ft rods bend all the way to the butt section, they are extreemly forgiving.

I know what you mean, but even if the bend all the way to the butt section a 3.25/3.5 if not needed in 10ft imo.
Still haven't heard the reason why you would want to go so high in Tc.

The numbers dont mean anything.

Would you rather have a broom stick with a really soft tip jist because its a lower testc curve written on it?

I have 2 sets of 3.5lb test curve rods, one set are 13ft casting tools and the other are 9ft rods. If playing a 10lb carp, thr 13ft rods will barely look like they have budged but the 9ft rods will wrap round im a big ark.

We fish for big powerful fish, snaggy waters we use 18lb line and 4oz leads, what benefit would you get from unballancing your set up and using a softer rod?

I have the Scopes in 10 foot 3.5tc and 10 foot dwarfs in 4.5tc for spod and marker. Not found any problems with any of them and take up less room in the car.

I got a set of 10ft 3.25Ib Scopes which suit me on the smaller waters I fish and the canals. I went for the 3.25's for the option of chucking PVA bags, and are doing all i asked of them.
In hindsight I may have gone for the 9fts for the pack away length. The 10's do go in the boot of the car diagonally which takes up a bit more room

The rod is there to propel the lead/bait/lure and act as a buffer for lunges. Otherwise it is completely counterproductive and why handlining is easier.
The less rod you have, the more power physics will allow to be transferred to the hook.
I agree tc means squat. 3.5lb may bend one rod to 90 degrees from tip to butt, whereas the next will bend in the top 2' like a quiver tip on a scaffold pole

I second that the dwarf 2020 are spot on.

I have them in 9ft 3.25tc and the 4.5tc spod rod.

Only thing is I would of gone for 10ft I feel it's a better all round length for short-medium fishing.

I recently acquired a set of daiwa crosscast xt's in 9 foot 2.
75 TC. Wouldn't use them for bag work or anything over 70/80 yards but they are a decent rod for the price imo and at 70 quid each they are great value. Worth a look.

I do like the look of the Nash Dwarf 2020 versions.... a few questions to people that have those:

1. Are the handles full length?
2. Is the carbon weave all the way up the rod or only part way.

1: No the have a short handle
2: Yes but the rods are not made of carbon ( still great rods)

They're not made from carbon
You mean there is no visible weave or they're fibreglass?

They are made of fiberglass with a carbon weave painted pattern
Fiberglass is not bad so don't worry about it, I'd rather have a fiberglass Dwarf than a stiff Carbon TX 2

They're not fibreglass. Carbon with a higher resin content, which is why they are slower to recover and aren't as crisp as a scope
