Wanting to purchase a sail shade.

The website where I'm looking to purchase from not only is this a requirement ‘when filling in the measurement boxes before it'll allow me to proceed' but the sale ends at midnight.

Does anyone know please the diagonal measurement of a rectangle measuring 3.6M x 2.5M?.

Many thanks,
noj

Double check it on a roofing or Pythagorean calculator free on google

Hi mate. I have to put in the boxes in inches.

Is 4383mm approximately 172.5 inches please?.

Asked Siri for conversion to inches and for once didn't say ‘I found this' but gave answer straight away.

Thank you mate appreciate that.

Just tap that question in to Google for instant results

Noj's size is correct assuming the corner is square, which is a recipe for a fu** up

No worries mate, don't want your builder measuring it
As Duggs said, and I'm distancing myself from responsibility of, you can forget that if it's not square.
Might have to pull out the old 3, 4, 5 trick to check

Cheers lads.......

Will see if it fits correctly ‘bit of jiggery pokery no doubt' to fit it to the uprights that I've had to fit to an existing odd shaped area....

Thanks lads.

Edit - Oh, and err, the reason it's an odd shaped area is because of how that previous plonking builder put in a dividing fence......

The ones I've seen have adjustable tensioners so you should have a fair margin for error

Not sure what will come first, spin bowlers suggestion or the wall your fitting it to falling down

I reckon it'll fall down under the weight of next doors rubbish that will be thrown over.

Serious question, do you have take these sails down in windy weather?

My daughter is the neighbour lol. Well with that ex crop of cowboy builders she will be when finally moving in.

There is that regards room for the sail shade to fit which will hopefully be to my benefit....

As for sail shades I take the one I've already got ‘different area of garden' down ‘when I ordered the one i currently use they never requested a diagonal measurement'. Just leave the bracket up that is screwed to its post but take off the turnbuckle etc. Easily takes down in seconds.

It's the square of the other 2 measurements (squared) added together >

3.6 x 3.6 = 12.96
2.5 x 2.5 = 6.25

12.96 + 6.25 = 19.21 > square of that is 4.35, it's the hypotenuse assuming the rectangle is 4 x 90degree corners

The easiest version to explain it is, as noj alluded to, the 345 rule, used by countless tradesman to set or check for square.

3x3 =9
4x4=16
9+16=25
The square route of 25=5

So a 3x4 triangle will have a 5 diagonal, If the corners are square

Get some practice in and we'll do some 3d pythagoras with 5digit numbers next week

Still gone whoosh mate.

If I had a request to make something 3.6m x 2.5m why couldn't I just make it as surely the diagonal measurement would just take care of itself?.

Edit - For two years running in my geography exam I got 10/100 so if I ever need a geography question asking please bear with me.

Measure 3 feet along one wall and mark it, 4 feet along the next and mark it.. measure the diagonal to see if it's 5 feet
If it's not, with your maths, come and ask us again
Over that distance it could be well off that 4383mm

The trouble is when making triangles, a small error can make a big difference in the angles. I've had to bin so many glass roof units as a lot of people just can't make a triangle based on three measurements, let alone two

It doesn't matter in the slightest for what you want, I just simplified the calculation Not showed for easier understanding

Cheers lads.

The confusing thing is that I wasn't asking for a triangle, just simply a rectangle.

Edit - If you could take a look on the covers&All website, type in sail shades and it'll show an image of straight sides sail shade....that's all I wanted a 4 straight side sail shade 3.6m x 2.5m but wouldn't allow me to move on further until I've filled in the diagonal measurement box.

Strangely enough I've just had to Knock a wall down in my daughters yard as those dodgy builders never put in a damp proof course which lead to it crumbling away.

Typical as I could have used that wall....

Not for a while now, they aren't very popular

I mostly do kitchens, plus wardrobes and general fitted furniture, but I still take on most chippy tasks when I feel like it. I frame the odd roof for a couple of building firms too
I have to keep my eye in and screwing boxes together gets boring

The diagonal measurement will be to allow for the rectangle being out of square, what you've ordered will have 4 right angle corners, so if it's going on brick walls that aren't square you will find it isn't quite parallel on all sides

Plus half the sparky, plumber and decorator's jobs as well 🙄

Tazi if you want a perfect rectangle just enter the size I said. If it's 2.5x3.6 going in a corner that's out of square and has to remain parallel to the wall that's quite a feat to translate into a drop down menu box with 1 diagonal measurement and get right!
If it's out in one direction you can be sure it's out elsewhere, so you need to measure it at the height of your fixings ideally and if it's really out how do you enter which side you're using as a flat reference, like staying parallel to the house and joining a perimeter wall that's out of whack?
You know what you need....

Cheers duggs, cheers noj as now I understand the importance of the diagonal measurement.

If this sail shade is just the job then I'll order another as a spare.

How about this one please lads.....

Top = 98 inches.

Both sides = 142 inches.

Front = 113 inches.

What would the diagonal measurements be please from top left to bottom right corner and top right to bottom left corner?.

Thank you.

I don't quite follow what your asking there tazi, if it's a rectangle with unequal ends, you need to physically measure the corners as that gives all you need to plot the shape out. Failing that you'd need at least one angle to start from

The first one I measured was a rectangle because I needed to square the area up due to that previous cowboy builder not putting the dividing fence in a straight line. However I have now measured it with the fence as it is and those measurements I gave I think I've now sorted out the required diagonal measurement which give or take a little are as below.

450cm
430cm.

Tazi- it's josh_shepz. How is the sail shade fixed? If it's on the tensioners which I'd be very surprised if it's not, make sure you or the company allow for the fact they stand off each corner around 150mm meaning you may need to reduce your overall measurement. It would seem such a simple thing to think the company would take care of but I had it recently with some blinds where the company didn't allow for the fixing brackets within a recess

Hey up mate how's ya keeping. I've allowed for the turnbuckle etc as fortunately I'd had a sail shade before that I had fixed to something resembling square that I had built, unlike those cowboy builders who put in this dividing fence out of line. Good to hear from you mate and thanks for the heads up.

Edit - I typed in the diagonal measurements in the box the best that I had thought it needed to be done and then paid for the item. Their people then emailed me back advising me that the diagonal measurements were out and gave a diagram of what they should be. I was out by 2.5 to 3 inches and so I cancelled the one I'd paid for and had the new measurement one. Cannot fault their service one little bit.
