The thread on best rod in tackle and some rods I bought recently have raised a couple of questions. What do blank manufacturers do with blanks that are discontinued?
Do they sell them off to other tackle companies? I'm asking this because I got a pair of daiwa crosscast extra a couple of days ago. Now, I'm not sure, but having had a set of torrix 's in the past, these blanks look a LOT like them. 1k weave on the butt section and just a plain scrim on the tip section.
If they are what l think they are, they could be seriously good value.
Any ideas or is someone going to piss in my chips?

I had a set for 12 years, so I know what they look like. The croscasts have a 1k weave on the butt section and a plain spiral scrim on the tip section. They look exactly like a torrid blank and there aren't unlimited manufacturers of rod blanks in this country. I'm not being definitive on this but they sure as hell look like they are built on torrid blanks.

I ive not seen the top section of the crosscast ext but i think i read its a plain UD finish the ' spiral ' might be the leftovers of the compression / curing tape ?
Either way for £70 ish they look petty decent rods and one of the few extending rods to have decent ( ceramic ) guides on

Since they don't say "made in UK" it makes it even less likely.
More likely daiwa have styled them on one of the most popular rods going

Google search it appears the crosscast ext is telescopic butt section? Wasn't aware of a torrix of this configuration.

Just looking at the pictures I can see it looks nothing like a torrix - got a carbon weave that's it.

I have had torrix rods for 12 years. I have a pair of the crosscasts. I'm not looking at pictures. The blanks look identical.

1k weave is mainly a finishing surface, no indication of the actual blank make up. Lots of rods have a 1k weave finish.

I can guarantee they are not torrix blanks , regarding discontinued blanks Harrisons are smaller than you think they dont have huge stocks of blanks like you would expect , example i ordered aviator blanks and it took 14 weeks to get them . When harrisons drop a blank it is because they have,nt sold any in ages and they have none in stock. It causes problems for me as i like to build on the old blanks , and regarding the op he did have torrix rods cause i have just rebuilt them.I think the torrix range will keep on in production like the ballista its by far harrisons biggest seller.
There are factories in china turning out very similar looking blanks to harrison,century but when you use them you will know why they are cheap , beware where you by blanks from !!

I was hoping you would jump in on this thread, Jeff- my glasses are fine lol. Guess I have an answer from an informed source. I have to give them a work out, but at just over 60 quid a pop for occasional use on small waters if they perform well, I'll be happy.
Harrison did do a stalker version- do they still make those?
They still LOOK like torrix's tho!

strip the logo of any blank with 1k or 3k weave and you would struggle to tell what it is.
I think the first example of this was the tfg rods looked just like the freespirit rods, people said they were the same blanks but put a weave on any blank and it would look like a free spirit blank

Andy chances are they will be good , blanks these days are very good its the fittings that let them down your not going to be using them 24/7, its a problem when the far
east sweat shops sell blanks that are not what they are saying they are, I was asked how much it would cost to build 30 aviators for a lake in france , the bloke told me he could get the blanks cheaper than i could ? When i asked him how he said he was buying them direct from taiwan !! Neat trick that when they are made in liverpool ! Told him where to go in no uncertain terms . If i had built them and they started to break etc he would have expected me to ring steve and say i have problems with your blanks would have made me look a right **** .
