I had a right ball ache with Royal sun alliance (more than) last year after getting my gear robbed from my shed, eventually they paid out but it wasn't easy even with loads of proof of ownership and cover for items out side of the house etc.

All I will say is keep your receipts/order confirmation emails/ bank statements for as much of your gear as possible, I had some items like a set of rods and reels that were getting on for 20 years old (Daiwa amorphous beach rods) that they wanted receipts for, I get that you have to prove you actually own stuff but when they say even having photos going back years and years showing you with the rods and reels isn't really good enough it makes you feel like your heads going to explode!

I suspect if you want cover for gear in your vehicle it will have to be provided by your vehicle insurer.

Not sure it if covers been left in the car, but I moved to M&S insurance as it covers me for rods away from home. This includes if I'm asleep in the bivvvy and they are stolen.

Actually very reasonable cost wise as well.

There was a thread about this some time ago, which is where I got to know about the above, maybe worth a search as it was well discussed from what I recall.

John Lewis cover mine at the moment, and theoretically when I'm doing nights (I managed to get that on paper). They also cover the tackle in the car.
Thanks for the heads up on M&S-will have a look when mine renews.

Asking for trouble storing your gear permanently in a van but if you have no other choice then needs must.

Most household policies will cover items in your vehicle but only if they are in a locked boot or out of sight, (glove compartment). You have 2 issues though, first watch out that there may be a limit for items in a vehicle, secondly, reasonable care.....if the insurers establish that you were permanently storing your gear in your van they may deem that you were not taking reasonable care to protect it properly.....(this is why tradesmen have difficulty with claims for tool thefts).

Insurance generally functions to cover unfortunate rare unexpected incidents resulting in loss or damage not of your fault however it seems unlikely you'll find a policy to cover not if as is normal but when your tackle is stolen! Advertising the storage place of potentially thousands of pounds of no doubt top of range tackle whilst inquiring about insurance cover looks well.......

Hi I don't check this site all the time but I did post on the previous thread and the moderators of the site said they were happy for me to post periodically. I run Anglers First Insurance which is a specialised fishing insurance product at www.anglersfirstinsurance.co.uk where you can apply online. The insurer is a syndicate at Lloyd's of London. The policy does cover fishing equipment stolen in your van, however we don't insure it if it is kept there permanently. We would only cover overnight the night before you go or the night after you've come back. We also cover you in the house, in outbuildings, storage facilities as well as on the bank. It also covers you for trips to France etc. We also cover accidental damage and the policy covers personal accident and personal liability insurance too for your fishing. We don't cover sea fishing (not relevant for carp! and we don't cover loss where you have left something behind and go back later and find its gone). All fishing equipment is insured BUT for items that individually cost over £300 we do need a list of those items and for those items if you make a claim we would need some form of proof of ownership (e.g. receipt/ confirmation from fishing tackle shop you bought the item from them/ web account history/ email trail from purchaser agreeing purchase etc).

We offer 10 monthly payments or a one off annual payment. We offer cover for up to £2k, £4k, £8k, £12k and £16k worth of equipment.

All the policies are different so please check carefully. If anyone ever has any questions about our insurance you can always call us on 0800 0355842 or email us at info@anglersfirstinsurance.co.uk. We are a family owned insurance broking business and we are authorised and regulated by the FCA.

We do rely on honesty from the people who take out policies with us and luckily most people are honest. Of course some people may make claims that aren't valid. All thefts have to be reported to the police before they can be subject to a valid claim. If we had strong doubts regarding a claim we may recommend loss adjusters be appointed to investigate the claim a bit further and for example visit the person and ask where the equipment is usually kept. But we always hope that is quite rare.

We are likely to be able to accept dated photos for items if they are just a bit over £300. But for really expensive poles, baitboats etc we would need some form of proof of ownership. The maximum we insure any item for is up to £3,000 and for items like that we would really need some form of proof. We are always happy to talk it through on the telephone and see if we can assist.

I am looking at taking out insurance just because you never know but unfortunately I haven't got a single receipt. I could provide photos of every bit of kit I have just not receipts. Might be worth a call

The average policy price must be quite substantial surely as paying out on photos as proof of ownership a very costly affair so I presume there's a lot to digest in the small print?

Just following up the posts below at Anglers First Insurance we don't need any proof of ownership on items under £300 although all the items are covered. For items over £300 we prefer to have some form of ownership e.g. receipt but also email from tackle shop confirming selling the item, web account history for ebay/facebook etc. For very expensive items we would need one of those, if they are just over £300 then please feel free to give us a call as we may be able to accept a photo at the time. Our office number is 0800 0355842. We do have a policy wording which sets out the terms and conditions, it is available on our website. Equally as someone has said below if anyone is interested we are happy to talk through anything on the phone.

I have a policy with Anglers First as it covers my kit in the shed.

I haven't had to make a claim (thank god!) so I can't comment on that but it was quick and easy to set up and is good value for money in my view

Not a plug, just an honest review.

Any chance of a ball park figure of the premium price for average tackle cover as I can't be alone in being curious whilst potentially interested given a taste of the carrot.

Ouch...

You could get a half decent mid-net worth household policy that gives you all the cover you need for your tackle and everything else for not much more...

To be fair though we think nothing of spending a couple of hundred on bait every few months....

House insurance policies are notoriously cagey when paying out for fishing tackle claims. Lots of hidden small print designed so they can wriggle out of it. I think a dedicated policy is we worth the money for that piece of mind. Mine is a tenner a month.

If there wasn't so many claims for Basias that people never had, we wouldn't all be having to pay for them on our premiums

Totally agree, never seem to hear of claims to replace 2 x fox warriors, 2 x st 10,000 baitrunners, jrc brolly, tfg mag runner alarms etc etc do ya! Just for examples sake, top end gear claims are abused as a quick cheaper way for image obsessive wrong uns to parade there egos on the catwalk and make genuine guys pay the price

To be fair I probably wouldn't even claim on the loss of a couple of reels, or a broken rod, in case I make myself un-insurable.
My concern is suffering a heavy loss where replacing a lot of gear would be unaffordable, maybe through house fire, bad car accident, robbery etc, leaving me unable to fish again.

At this present time I am fortunate to afford such premiums to buy cover for my kit to keep me fishng should I suffer a loss. It just depends on how much you value your fishing. It winds me up that people take the 'P' and make these policys hard for a company to offer.

Korda use to do a policy but had to pull the plug on it. I think it was about this time that it was said that there were more claims for Basias, than what Daiwa had produced

Yeah I didn't expect it to be that much either lol was only rods, reels, bedchair, bivvy, pod, alarms and bait boat (not expensive one either) didn't include nets, slings, mats, terminal etc

I note all the posts below and everyone has a different attitude to insurance and obviously there is a good debate amongst the fishing community. I would just like to clarify though at Anglers First Insurance when people talk about paying £10 per month or £21.35 per month, we only charge 10 monthly payments - not 12 - so although it is a full year's cover, it is only 10 payments and so its a bit less than you might have thought. We are as frustrated as everyone else by fraudulent claims, however we know that by far the most people who take out our policies are honest, thankfully!

I should imagine that fraudulent claims have numerous similar characteristic red flags amongst them and are dubious but hard to call out due to or lack of supporting evidence. For example a policy taken out with pure intentions to claim are cashed in on by the eager holder when patience after a few payments and the need to join the catwalk gets the better of them.
