Can anyone recommend some decent walkie talkies for me and my mates to use when fishing?
Most sites I work on main contractors use Motorola pretty durable designs have to be to put up with being covered in *****, dropped left out in the rain.

Yep - the Cobra ones mentioned below are pretty good for the money - got mine from Maplin before they went tits up - I too have a set of 4 - bought them for the kids when camping, but have used them on the bank a couple of times
That said, do you really need walkie talkies these days ? ....when I got mine there werent really too many unlimited tariffs for mobiles. Nowadays you're better off with a mobile surely ? ...you can do group FaceTime calls too or send recorded voice messages. Struggling to think when I'd use mine again - other than for the kids to mess about with. ...We did use them in the cars going down to cornwall a couple of years ago, but it got rather annoying when the kids discovered the call button.

Unlimited airtime on mobiles makes a big difference but I still think there is a place for walkie talkies in certain situations.
I'm thinking of a group of anglers fishing the same lake for long periods and leaving the walkie talkies on 24hours a day all tuned into the same channel. It's what a group of us have done in the past and will do in the future. Not for a proper conversation but just to exchange the odd non essential remark, a bit of banter, maybe tell a joke. Of course if it's important or personal you get your mobile out.
We use cheap Binatones not too dissimilar from the ones in my link and they do the job.

I found the biggest differences between radios
cheap ones are harder on battery life not very shock resistant or water resistant
this changes with good quality radios Cobra Midland and Motorola are ALL very good and IMO worth the bit extra cash

I know it's down to how much time you are actually talking on them but 18 hours doesn't sound a long time to me.
Granted we don't chat all day but the cheapies that we use and are powered by 3xAAA's last 2 to 3 days when left on
24/7

YES I have Cobras very similar ones they are great UP TO 5km range
the extreme have a 1 mile range hence a heavier usage

I bought a pair of these so me and the daughter could play spies.
I use walkie talkies quite often at work so know a bit about them.
The cheapo cobra are quite decent except it has a very annoying roger bleep that i cannot turn off.
They have rechargeable batteries that you can charge in the handset using a usb.

All of us that go to France have got these. UHF Model then Program the 8 PMR Frequencies into it they have more TX Power than the cheap ones.

Anything by Motorola and you wont go wrong. Thats all we ever used on site in the chemical plants ive worked at and they take one hell of a beating and never miss a beat.
I personally don't like Motorolas at all cause you have to charge/change the batteries very often. Plus, the majority of them are not waterproof. Tytera has got some good ones, and the prices are pretty affordable. Cobra is, I would say, a better alternative since the range is bigger (around 40 miles). I, for instance, bought mine from Choicecommunications.ie like three years ago, and it's still working perfectly. Just make sure you get one that doesn't need to be charged too often, and it's waterproof. Good luck and have fun fishing!

I wanted a set earlier this year to chat with my mate knowing we would be in different swims, and just walking around Decathlon, I picked up these cheapies for £29.99.
I have to say, the quality of the voice and range is spot on, but a set of Duracell AAA (3) last 24 hours tops, so over the course of 5 days for a pair I nearly spent as much on batteries as the walkies cost me.
That said they did the job well but for a price.

Depends on how much you chat, transmitting uses far more power than receiving but the battery life on the cheapo Binatones we use last at least 3 days.
I can't see them on sale anymore but no guarantees these might be similar?

To be fair that was turned on at 7am and off by 10pm and if you added up the chat through the day, tops 1-2 hours. I'll keep them and look out for 4 sets (3) USB rechargeable AAA which I'll hook up to a decent battery pack and have one on the go and one in recharge.
I do like these cheap ones but not really viable with normal batteries, certainly in my experience.

I've got a few enerloops pro and loads of ikea ones now, I don't notice a Difference, the ikea charger was also identical to the enerloop one bar the led colour
They do a lower grade aa battery now too, and just to confuse me used the same colour for the cheap ones and changed the colour for the higher grade ones

I've not got any rechargeable AAA's yet but I bought this for my AA's It can actually measure the capacity of each battery

Tight git.
To be honest it was a bit out of character for me to buy that, but it was lockdown and it kept me amused.
Somehow I acquired loads of AA's so I tested the capacity of all of them.
Numbered them and placed them in a league table, the bottom ones got relegated to the bin.

Use to have a scanner many moons ago and the filth I had to endure for hours upon hours a month during phone sex was downright disgusting.....
