Hi all having owned the diawa spod reel then changing to the Shimano Ultegra XTD Spod Reel in my opinion the worst thing I could have done , not the work horse the diawa one is .
Do I go back to the original diawa spod or do I go for the new Daiwa Emblem Spod 35 SCW QD Reel

What's wrong with the XTD? I do find that it'll get waterlogged if you dunk it in the water, other than that, I've cained mine and it's still doing the do.

I'm using the Daiwa Spod now. Preferred the Aerlex Spod tbh. And the Daiwa is very expensive by
comparison when you throw in the (essential imo) £30 fast drag mod

Me Personally don't work as well, gearing is not as good
Had my diawa's for a lot longer with no problems what so ever
I will add I never dunk my reels in water and they always get cleaned when Finished

Don't understand that at all. Both got the same retrieval rate. So what, you stripped the XTD gears or something?

Bit puzzled about the drag. Lock it up solid when using the reel. No other setting needed for me. Loosen when not in use if you wish. No need for fancy and expensive mods, unless I'm missing something.

I use some old Daiwa SS9000 Longbeams for spodding and markerwork.
Proper workhorses, only the retrieve is on the slow side compared to the modern reels.
I don't mind though.

I use the Daiwa Emblem spod reel on both spod and marker rods. Converted the drag cap on the marker rod to the weston speed cap. No need for it on the spod rod.

Yep I use one rod for Spodding and markering. It's a very slow drag as standard so a nightmare for depth finding.

Also when refilling the Spod I find a quick drag a big help to get the right drop on the line when loading.

I'm usually there or there about and don't use the drag. I'm sure that if I did, I'd forget to tighten it up properly and lose a digit 😁

Got the older Daiwa spod reel. Use it regularly. Does the job without fuss. Fast retrieve, reasonably smooth, cast lock which I like. No complaints.

Im also on the lookout for a new set of spod reels, im kinda torn between a cheaper and a mid range option.
Avid spod and marker reel or the daiwa emblem spod 35 scw qd. Didnt see alot of comments about the avid ones they seem decently priced and have a great return rate, not sure about the longevity i dont want to change a spod reel any time soon.

That is always an option mate, as a user of shimano ci4s on my rods im sure the spod reel is also a banger. Was just wondering about that specific avid reel cuz i dont see alot of mentions about it. Maybe for a good reason.

What about the new fashion of dunking the reel to wet the braid on the spools

Prolly been pinched from sea anglers no doubt to lessen bird's-nests and braid/line wrapping around rod rings.
I wouldn't suggest dunking an XTD spod reel as they get waterlogged.

I don't dunk them but I do wet the braid because it sets out very easily and will crack off easier if it's dry

That kills them eventually, best to use an 8 carrier braid that doesn't need wetting

The good old Daiwa Spod reel is a workhorse - mine looks an utter mess, always does - but year in year out, keeps doing the job. I'd go back to one of those if I were in your position.
