Getting murdered by Mozzies as usual. Got a screen on my brolly but looking for something to do some evening River sessions with no cover. Do they work effectively?
Was looking at the backpacker one you attach a gas canister and some cheap pads. The handheld one looks more compact but a bit of a faff to do a DIY refill (the replacement cost for these things is ridiculous)

yes but by god they work so well
the only other thing that comes close are the Geranium oil based mozzie coils you buy in France they are safe and
excellent DONT buy the dangerous chemical ones sold here unless they are Geranium based though they are rubbish

I have been looking at them aswell , work out quite expensive to run , and reviews seem a bit hit and miss .

Each time I go to France I buy 10 packs of the Geranium ones, cheap as chips and do me a season, even kept the biting flys at bay on BEO👍👍

I've been running a Thermacell Backer now for 3 seasons, they absolutely work 100% and stop the mozzies dead in there tracks! You can literally have the mozzy doors open on the brolly with the thing running and watch mozzies fly upto the door and do a 180 turn, they're are a fantastic piece of equipment, the trick is to buy the pads in bulk when on offer, I usually pick up 48hr packs, they use next to no gas at all as its basically a small pilot light heating a cube of mesh that gently heats the pad which omits a slight haze/smoke. I was sceptical but they absolutely work! The mozzies over on my Cambs syndicate are like sparrows so I'm glad I'm protected.

I bought one years ago think mine must be the handheld version, only ever used it once it was reasonably effective. I dont know if they are all the same but the one i have the refill packs came with 1 gas and 3 pads, the gas lasts around 9-10 hours and the pads 3-4 hours of course i forgot about it and used all the gas up on one pad that i forgot to change!
I would only try it again on somewhere with a real problem.

The Thermacell units that run off small cylinder type gas work out expensive but the backpacker version runs on the screw type gas canisters and uses hardly any at all, I think I've had the current 100g Coleman cartridge on for 5/6 evenings now and appears to have plenty left in it.

Well if I were buying one for the 1st time now I would go for the backpacker not seen one in the flesh but clearly the pads last a lot longer and you can use a spare stove gas can
I was very lucky few years ago a place I knew that dealt in bankrupt stock were selling the refills for a £1 a pack then they dropped them to 3 for a £1 (zoom in on the white label at the top)
so I bought the lot I sold 50% of them made a large profit and so my stock of 80 packs cost me nothing
still got quite a few that I would not part with

ive been using a lantern I brought off ebay for 11.99
lasts 3 nights on 1 charge via the usb lead and in the morning I can have loads that have been zapped on it
I really rate them
this one is expensive but can get same one for 11.99

those sort of things that use a light to ATTRACT the insects are really good if your inside a zipped up bivvy
however they are totally counter productive in and open fronted bivvy or it the doorway is rolled up as they will attract more than they will kill

The backpacker is great but make sure its not the USA version as this doesnt work with our regular cartridges !
