Hi Guys,
Trying to decide between the 2, I know both are warm and well made.

Any suggestions as an all round jacket.

If you are going for the Fortis ones rather than the generic Snugpak ones I believe the FJ6 is the only one that has a slightly longer body length especially for anglers who might be sitting around a lot. I think all with SJ prefix are the slightly shorter length whether Fortis branded or Snugpak branded. I like the length of my FJ6, certainly wouldn't want shorter for fishing.

I've got the FJ6 and it's very good.

Wouldn't want it any warmer. Well designed, comfy, and nice and long at the back, and I'm quite tall.

Go for the 6.

Or

Get the Sasquatch jacket by Fortis. It is exclusive to total fishing if you want DPM.

I agree with the post by Jon that the FJ6 is warm enough for most situations. If it is too cold for it then its not fishing weather.

Also, agree with dickweed, the Sasquatch looks a good option if you want SJ9 warmth but a bit longer, but haven't tried this one myself.

Edit: Just found that Johnson Ross have the black FJ6 on special offer, looks like in stock for most sizes.

I thought the sasquatch was a snugpak coat not part of the fortis range

Yes, think that is true. But they are all made in Snugpak's factory.

The difference between the standard Sungpak SJ6 and 9 is simply that the 9 is warmer mate. More insulation.

I have the SJ9 (and salopettes which are excellent BTW) - my thinking being i wanted the warmest jacket for when static or tucked away in my bivvy - its easy to cool down if you're too hot by unzipping, but I dont recall ever needing to. There isn't a huge difference between the SJ6 and SJ9. The only time I've sweated in mine was wearing it hoofing my barrow - that's a mistake you only make once

I usually wear nothing more than merino thermals under my jacket and salopettes.

If you're planning on being mobile perhaps neither the SJ6 or SJ9 is the right choice - for that I would go for more layers you can add/remove when needed. As gross as it sounds both the SJ6 and SJ9 are absolutely fine to wear when you're active and sweating as they are synthetic rather than down filled, but they won't be comfortable worn that way. IMHO they're better for when you're static.

The salopettes were a game changer for my winter fishing. Absolutely brilliant. I also use the SJ9 but again, it's for winter tbh.

As an all round jacket the 6 would be more than enough imo. Even the SJ3 is rated to -5 so is worth considering.

I have a Snugpak SJ9 and a Fortis FJ6, both great jackets but use the Fortis more as the Snugpak is too warm apart from when it's proper brass monkeys. As mentioned the SJ (Snugpak jacket) is shorter than the FJ (Fortis jacket) which has a longer back section that covers your bum, oh and the sleeves seem a bit longer on the FJ. Because Fortis also do SJ jackets I've always thought of them as FJ as ' full jacket' and the SJ as 'short jacket'

That's what I thought until I saw one advertised on total fishing website. I thought total fishing had made a mistake so I called Fortis who confirmed the fortis Sasquatch was exclusive to total fishing.

Is it just me that found these jackets a bit naff?

I had the 9, the large swamped me and the medium just about fit - i went for the medium which considering its bulk wasn't very warm at all, then i got the large - again not very warm.

It's just you. Countless guys on here rave about them despite the inconsistent sizing which is a well know issue.

What did you wear with it buddy?

The SJ's work on the principle that they harness and store your body heat. You can wear just a T-Shirt with the 9 and be out in minus 5 and be toasty.

If you wear layers underneath your body heat cannot get to the insulation and they won't work properly.

The 9 is ridiculously warm.

Agreed Ian, I bought the SJ9 with matching salopettes after being recommended on here and for sitting around in the winter there a mega combination.........Wish i had bought them much earlier in my later years on the bank.......

I've got the sj3 sj6 and the sallopettes the 6 and sallopettes only come out in the depths of winter any other time the sj3 is plenty warm enough

It is but because it's so thin and light weight it's mega comfortable......
