I have to admit I genuinely had no idea you could take coarse fish from rivers and streams!

Catch limits
There's a daily limit on the number of fish you can take.
Coarse (freshwater) fish
Each day you can only take from rivers:
1 pike (up to 65cm)
2 grayling (30cm to 38cm)
15 small fish (up to 20cm) including barbel, chub, common bream, common carp, crucian carp, dace, perch, rudd, silver bream, roach, smelt and tench
Any eels you catch (except conger eels) must be released alive.
You can also take:
minor or ‘tiddler' species, such as gudgeon
non-native species
ornamental varieties of native species like ghost or koi carp

I would, but it would effectively ban live baiting, or using fresh deadbaits....

I thought it said on the petition that dead baiting , using fish from the same water was ok ?
Not sure about live baiting , but then I think that will have to be banned next .

So it does, I was still focused on the spelling errors from the previous paragraphs and that bit didn't sink in.
Which fish gets to be the baron? Will the Prince of the river outrank it?
I'll probably sign it, but it seems a bit half arsed like the otter petitions, I don't suppose they can edit it once it's been published

We have precious few rights enshrined in law in this country. Why vote to sign them away. It's like the right to vote. If you don't want to exercise it then just don't do it. No need to recind the right to do it.

I'm genuinely amazed that any angler has that attitude to the removal of freshwater fish from our lakes and rivers.
Such an outdated law I just don't understand why it hasn't been changed long ago.

As a regular angler on the irwell and occasionally on the ribble I can assure you it's not the stereotypical EE response. Regularly seen - and reported - non EE culprits taking the Mickey. ...

I did get wind of a bloke who was selling trout on to restaurants. As I say, I let the EA know and gave them his registration number. He'd been putting long lines in the river like they used to do on the seashores. Bad form.
Not much more I could do really apart from offering great him outside...

Well done Mal but that's not the experience of many people. I know you won't agree but I have to say it's EE's taking fish for the plate It's not just rivers and streams but the current rule only cover them.

Not denying that problem at all tinhead. It's a cultural thing that doesn't translate.
That's why I think the petition is good as it's more of a catch all solution - hopefully

It's quite obvious who the majority of people stealing our fish are 🙄 calling it a cultural thing is no excuse anymore , they know it's wrong and don't give a fudge .
It's an even bigger problem across Europe , with gangs setting up refrigeration units and taking tons of coarse fish , especially in Spain and Italy

I shall be careful here.
I'm not sure what the crime rate in those EE countries is but I won't tar them all and say their culture is to thieve but in my experience a disproportional amount of them here do not abide by the law.
That's not to say they aren't any who do not do good and contribute
That's about as PC as I can make it while doing my best not to upset Mal
