It seems that the coronavirus outbreak is gathering momentum and with airlines, cruise ships and other big gatherings of people being run down or in some cases put into quarantine I would be interested to know what precautions anglers and more importantly venue owners are considering for the coming season. Considering that anglers will be coming to France from all over the UK, travelling in packed ferries and mixing with people from all over when using the service area's on motorways there is a very real risk of the infection spreading. In many cases anglers will be eating together at the venue's and in some instances travelling together in coaches we have all got to be taking the threat of coronavirus very seriously. From the perspective of a fishery owner there is a real risk that is someone is diagnosed with the illness when at the venue then the authorities could close the venue down until the outbreak is over. I am aware that this subject is not as interesting as a discussion on fishing however it is something we all could be affected by in the coming months. I would be especially interested to hear from fellow fishery owners regarding precautions that we can take to reduce the risk for both ourselves and our anglers.

Dont think venues are in great danger as it is not that hard to desinfect areas that anglers use... more problems you can expect on ferries etc... many flights are also already cancelled all over europe... anyone traveling in next few months have to take into consideration that they might be on hold somewhere for longer time so will not always come home as expected... and what is most important even if it doesnt look like serious problem it can be for older and sick people, death rate is 15% in people over 80 years so take consideration to that and keep in mind that you can maybe go thrue this like an ordinary flue but somebody close to you that is already sick, old etc can have very big problems when infected...

At the end of the day Jim it's your choice to take angler's whilst this virus is on the rise as the lake owner. If you've family/friends that are at risk from a flu virus, you've a difficult decision to make it seems. Good luck.

Its not whether we take anglers or not but more a realistic appraisal of where we are at the moment. All we can do is try and reduce the risk to out customers which in turn will reduce the risk to our family.

What are you doing to reduce the risk at your fishery?

You have a duty of care to protect visitors to your venue.... it would be interesting to know what you and other fishery owners are doing.

It seems the only effective methods to limit the chances of spreading the virus are minimum contact and cleanliness. Think that's all you can try to achieve Jim.

The next question for fisheries abroad is what will you do if there are movement restrictions imposed by the government whether its UK, French etc and paid up customers are unable to get to the venue.

Will bookings be refunded partially or fully, rescheduled ?

It's accepted that this situation is unexpected and neither the customers fault or the venues fault.

Personally I have a booking fully paid up for next month at a well known venue and I've asked them this question. When/if I get a response I'll ensure that the response whether good or bad is known.

It is worth all anglers travelling to France to invest in a comprehensive travel insurance covering them for healthcare and cancellations, etc. I recently traveled to Australia and did exactly that at relatively small cost.

So, your saying take travel insurance and try and claim it back as you'll be keeping any monies paid for fishing at your venue?

Quick google produced this little gem -

That said, Money would not be surprised if insurers – faced with a deluge of claims in the future – started to argue that the virus was a known problem when the policy was bought. Force majeure may be used to avoid paying out.

So far Eurotunnel have a webpage saying they will follow government guidelines ...As and when they change.
At least they are acknowledging the virus.
P&O however .......... Nothing , no advice or possible future actions to would be travellers ,and considering the hoardes of school trips they take onboard each day who are using coaches from right across Europe , I feel they are perhaps sticking their heads up their funnels and hoping it will maybe go away.
Forewarned would be forearmed , I am now just over two weeks away from a booked trip , and have no idea if the ferries will be affected , I know I wont get a refund on the lake as with most bookings non refundable if less than 8 weeks to go.

Fingers crossed

Well I messaged angling lines and asked what would happen if travel restrictions were put in place so I couldn't make my booking in May and they didn't directly answer the question just asked if I'd taken out travel insurance lol so I don't think they will be refunding anyone. To be fair I think it's fair enough as the lakes could stand to lose a whole seasons worth of revenue through no fault of their own. Gutting as none of my group had taken out any insurance at the time of booking so any insurance now are very unlikely to cover it. But I'd say its our own fault rather than the lake owners or agents.

That's a selective piece of the article.
It also says that they have spoken to the Association of British Insurers who say their members will pay out if the cover is taken out before the British Government issues non travel advice for the particular country in question.

What a load of tosh. If there is a ban on travel fisheries will lose all of their income. Also consider that deposits paid last year will have been put through accounts and cotisations of 23% already paid on them. And what about the cost of work carried out throughout the winter to ensure the lakes and facilities are as best of possible for clients. In the last week I have paid out 380 for tree surgeon, 760 of hardcore and 650 of gravel. And the over winter feeding program costs a notable amount to ensure the carp are at their best for the anglers. I am not commenting on the subject of refunds or no refunds but just posting regarding your stupid comment that fishery owners lose nothing !! Bills still need paying mate.

Just my opinion, some may well offer customers money back but I wouldn't blame any that don't, as I imagine anglers are their only source of income, also I'm guessing lots of fisheries will have to feed the fish in their lakes to make up for no bait going in. Also rescheduling is obviously very difficult as most places will already have bookings for next year.

This will be a good test for venues and will show how they manage things and how willing they are to help anglers... if booked anglers will be somewhere in quarantine and cant make it will be up to owners to offer (or not) those weeks to others and help booked anglers out etc etc....

Its hardly like a business struggling with low profit margins now is it.....

The money raked in week after week is significant. You have to be really daft as an angler not to see this. Yep, some venues invest in their fisheries to a degree but this is a low cost business with high profit margins so no need to play the 'hard up' card....

As an angler visiting venues I accept this situation but for an owner to even suggest their not doing exceptionally well is quite simply shocking and a reflection of their attitude towards paying customers.

Yep, as others have said we'll quickly see who's willing to assist in these exceptional circumstances and who just want to see the pounds rolling in and have little regard for customers.

I've had confirmation from that you need to look at your insurance if there are travel restrictions stopping you from attending.

WARNING

I have looked at a couple of insurers and you need to be very careful, some specifically exclude epidemic/ pandemic situations'. Axa insurance looked okay but I need to call them to check I'm covered.

If your going to France on a fishing holiday and either don't have insurance yet or have insufficient cover (check the small print for exceptions) then I suggest you spend the money on it now.

You need to either take a risk and lease a lake for a given period or buy it.. the fish could all go belly up the next day, it's a high risk and labour intensive business.
Not that I'm in the habit of defending fisheries, animal cruelty (stocked purely for repeated captures with no safe place to hide) for profit isn't my cup of tea.
But if it was that easy and lucrative everybody would be doing it.

Ok. So you are saying that it's not a high profit margin business?

And don't even start on the 'legal' fishery conversion as you'll open up a can of worms.... legally registered is the easy conversion but the movement of fish.....

It seems you have a rather jaundiced view when it comes to French fisheries. I think you need to look at any business to appreciate that profit margins have nothing to do with the final operating profit of a business. Having said that I offer no apologies that, like many others, I invested everything into realizing my dream and actually make a profit from doing so. Great........You make an aside regarding legal fisheries and then a rather open ended referral to movement of fish....why ? If you actually knew anything about successful fisheries in France these days you will know that the illegal stocking of fish stolen from other waters is something the vast majority of venue's abhor and take pride in not doing. You really seem to have an axe to grind so best if we drop this swapping of posts and learn from the comments of others on the forum.

I see no reason why a fishery should refund anglers who do not attend. If they hadn't taken a booking for that week/for that peg from a British angler who couldn't attend then it could have potentially been filled by a local - it isn't their fault if you don't attend to fish your reserved swim.

You would lose out if you chose not to take out comprehensive travel insurance but that is your problem, not the fishery owners.

Andy. I don't think you have any idea of the costs involved in running a legal fishery in france. I have had my place just over a year and believe me it's not a massive money maker! Sure during the open season we get a good income if full but that has to last the year! Tax on the service sector is 22.4% alone. Over the winter the costs and work are massive... Netting, maintenance, feeding the fish, tree work, siltex, digger hire, lake dye, swim repairs, stocking, public indemnity insurance etc etc.
I for one am very concerned as to whether I will even be in business in a year. If the worse case scenario plays out we will be mullered. The only money in the bank will be deposits and that will not pay the bills.

I'm not having the ' feel sorry for the poor fishery owners' feeling atm and doubt I will ever as I see the annual inflated price increases slipping in followed by inflated costs for bait, particle, food etc only to arrive at a fishery to find the inflated stocking levels confirmed and the 'A' team is now a B team as target fish x and y died the previous year but they didn't let anyone know and struggling to get a bite in the first 4 days.

To now paint fishery owners in a light of poor hard done by businesses struggling to keep their heads above water is quite simply absurd.

We will see what fisheries come out of the next 6 months with positive customer feedback.

I guess the 'less than great' fisheries might give the impression that their all the same.....

I charge less for bait than at home as I want the best quality going in. for the fish....we make very little on food....if my customers are not catching I give them free bait to try and rigs etc as I want them to have a great time. During the close whilst the fish are still feeding I put approx 70kg of food in a week so the fish will achieve best weights. A stock with over 25 fish above 40lbs to over 60 needs a lot of food. Another massive cost was electricity running the air systems.
Last year we ran at a loss. This year will be the same.

I've had good experiences and some not so good experiences and approach every trip with the enthusiasm of my first foreign fishing trip so I'm certainly not judging all fisheries the same so to insinuate such negativity is a poor attempt of character assassination.

Fisheries are judged by customers honest feedback only.

No one is trying to 'character assassinate' Andy...just take a look at what you are writing in your posts. It is a less than flattering view of French carp fisheries. I would point out that like most business's, carp fisheries are judged on their success. The great thing is that with success comes a full diary made up of regulars which is what makes the job more than just a way of earning an income. To get to that stage takes years of hard work, injections of cash and stress and the fail rate is very high indeed.

I have customers coming back for their 3rd and 4th visits since taking ownership and very good reviews. I'm happy to say I've made a few friends along the way and have been amazed at how helpful some of my guests have bee
I was up against the old ballif telling lies to his regulars that the stock had gone, which it definitely has not as I've had it netted.
You are entitled to your opinion but from what I've seen of other fishery owners near me most work very hard to ensure their customers have the best possible experience in france.

I'm thinking more of cover just for normal mishaps like injury whilst fishing and things specifically fishing related, would AXA cover you for that if you don't specify your going on a fishing holiday?. Confused as I've seen companies selling insurance just for sports holidays and they kind of imply that normal travel insurance may not cover you properly.

Just taken out my insurance with (staysure) £32 I'm 44 and no health issues.

I phoned them up and explained what I wanted and I'm covered
You need to get travel disruption cover that covers you for any illnesses including Corona also covers you

Staysure terms and conditions say you need
1. The extension to the policy for travel disruption.
2. The FCO need to formally advice against travel to your location.
3. You need to have taken out the policy before the outbreak.

They should do that weeks ago... Number of infected is such that health system cant cope anymore.... That is the worst case scenario... At the moment doctors have to decide who will get a chance on respirators and have a chance to fight and who doesnt... People dont get needed care for other normaly not deadly diseases because there are no more capacities in hospitals etc... This is what you get when people are talking how this is just another flue and it is nothing to worry about and they still travel and spread the virus around... Yes it is not that bad when you have low number of cases but once you get numbers that break the health system you are ****ed... And that is what they have... It looks like non of the european countries is taking this serious..

Just looked at Staysure myself.. in the T&C for travel disruption it states:

You'll be covered to cancel your holiday because of the coronavirus if:

- The FCO lists your destination as unsafe to travel to (against all or all but essential travel)
- You have the optional Travel Disruption Extension
- The outbreak in your destination wasn't publicly known when you bought your travel insurance.-

So reading that at high level.. if you buy insurance now, I'm thinking you won't be covered for France? since it's already publicly known that Coronavirus is there?

As per information given further on the website. Its all dependent on FCO travel advice. Only if the FCO advises against travel to that area or Country.

Am I covered to cancel my trip if my destination has confirmed cases of coronavirus?

Having confirmed cases of the coronavirus doesn't always mean that a place is unsafe to travel to.
The Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) or the World Health Organisation (WHO) make this decision. They can advise against all, or all but essential travel if a place becomes unsafe to travel to because of a health outbreak.
You'd only be covered to cancel your trip if the FCO, WHO or local authorities hadn't issued any advice before you bought your policy with the optional Travel Disruption Extension and the FCO have now advised against all or all but essential travel to your destination.

I have a dilemma I have a trip booked for last week in May full lake booking we have paid £800 deposit and the balance of £1600 is due in the next couple of weeks . Do I
A pay it and risk losing £2400
B stick it on a horse in Cheltenham and hope it wins 😜
C try and work out a deal with the owner and say we will pay on arrival
Imo I think if trips had to be cancelled the least the owners could do is offer you a discounted trip at a later day

I've asked the venue I'm booked to go to next month about the situation and they said you'll need to claim on your insurance. Several lake owners were on this thread early on and they showed no desire to help out any anglers.

So assuming you get similar feedback it's just down to trying to get enough insurance cover and fingers crossed you won't need to try and make a claim.

I've spoken to Axa insurance and if I can't get to the lake in France due to movement restrictions and the FCO say do not travel there I'm covered.

This makes me very happy. I'll be gutted not to get to the venue but I'll get me money back and spend the week at me local Syndicate trying to hook that elusive common..

Storming, I'd go with option C as at least you haven't handed over your cash which in the event you can't go would be difficult to get back directly through the lake owner

A bit crap for the lake owner too in that context but I would assume most business would have adequate insurance to cover such eventualities themselves

Will see how the next two weeks goes but I can't see the situation improving much I suppose we both have options he could let us pay the balance on arrival or tell us to do one then he has the lake place to refill but would anyone send £2400 the way things look at the moment ?

Just an FYI for everyone here - I had a thorough conversation with Staysure and as long as you purchase the Disruption Extension and have the policy start before the WHO announce any travel advisories you will be covered.

Well I've just been on hold for the last 15 mins 30th in the que

I'm covered if the French government or The Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) or the World Health Organisation make the decision to close the border or not travel into France.

But Im not covered if the complex shuts and I doubt very much if I'll get my money back from the venue
All paid up van hire crossing and complex
Fingers crossed it'll be ok

Off to France tomorrow evening on a 6-hour ferry crossing.

Booked a hotel part way to break up the journey.

Got to do a supermarket shop before we go to the venue.

Loads of social mixing and subsequent raised opportunity for infection. Was undecided whether to go or not. "What's the worst that can happened?" I asked Mrs T.

"We could both catch it and die," she replied.

She's a bundle of laughs!

I can see what is going to happen...We'll get off the ferry, drive to the lake and then be told that the FCO, WHO, et al have closed the borders...Still, I can think of worse places to be stuck.

Maybe this is apt: LINK.

Good luck with the fishing Ken I'm sure you'll be fine, my accountant has just walked in the office this morning to do the monthly accounts he's in his 70's and just come back from a 12 day cruise, the ship broke down 3 days from the end of the trip they had to limp into a port and get several connecting flights back to blighty, first thing he starts doing is coughing and sneezing.

Just taken out annual comprehensive cover with the extention from staysure. £58 total for the year, still not 100% sure whats covered if trip is cancelled but feel a bit more relaxed now. To be honest im more worried about missing out on my trip than loosing the money!! Going 3 weeks Friday so keeping everything crossed.

The reason I mentioned ABTA is because it's easy to prove you booking. When you're paying a fishery owner in France then it could be open to abuse making it a bit more difficult to claim?

Not trying to scaremonger just making a point. If countries go into lockdown then it's going to hit the insurance companies hard. Hand written receipts or emails may be scrutinised.

When it comes so far that doctors suggest this than you know it is time to step back and set priorities! ----- another development top doctors suggested that rather than admit patients on a 'first come first served' basis, hospitals should swap to 'catastrophe medicine' guidelines - typically used in war zones and during natural disasters - where those with the greatest chance of survival are given priority. If a limit on beds is implemented it could mean elderly patients with no signs of coronavirus being turfed off ICU wards to make space for younger patients who have longer left to live. The guidelines should apply to all patients needing intensive care treatment and not just those suffering from coronavrius, according to guidance published this week by the Society of Anesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care (SAARI).

Harsh.

The virus isn't affecting younger people badly unless they have serious pre existing issues so this scenario isn't going to happen and I'd guess a healthy 60 year old professional has a better case for survival than a 30 year old obese layabout that does nothing.

This is Just an example of a journalist over sensationalising issues for a few columns of fame in a SAARI publication.

Sorry mate, but this is ********.

Triage af this nature is happening NOW, within 5km of where I'm sitting.

If it can happen here, in the rich part of Italy, then it COULD happen in the UK.

Hospitals are on the verge of collapse, older people are losing out in favour of younger patients for intensive care beds. They make no investigation into whether or not you're a 'professional' or a 'layabout' before you're admitted to hospital. You don't get to argue your case, because you're too sick to do so and you've got no-one with you, because they are an infection risk and there isn't space anyway.

Old folk are being taken away by ambulance crews wearing full hazmat suits and no-one can go with them. If they don't make it, they are buried without funeral service in the presence of a maximum of 2 family members, who must stay 1m apart at all times.

So don't panic, don't fight over bog roll, don't nick hand sanitiser from your local hospital, but don't dismiss this as 'sensationalising' ... it isn't.

No one is saying that this isn't going to get progressively worse for the next 2 months.....

But I'd like to see some evidence that Italy are selectively letting older corona virus victims die while treating younger patients as is alleged. This is no doubt headline news worthy and being documented in press heavily.

On 12 March the Croatian government announced that it will introduce with immediate effect a compulsory 14 day period of self-isolation for all foreign nationals arriving from the following destinations: the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Austria, Netherlands, China, the Republic of Korea, Japan, and Singapore. Foreign nationals who do not have a residence in Croatia will be asked for proof of an accommodation booking.

Good enough?

That was 2 days ago, they've got an extra few thousand cases to deal with now.

The policy isn't 'outrageous', it's a tragic reality and a pragmatic solution of the problem of having many more patients than ventilators.

There will be other trips Ken! Maybe just a sugestion... I know there is an issue because of comercial reasons, paying fee for advertising... But anyway maybe forum should allow a thread for a month or two where anglers could put down what weeks and where they had to cancel so others could possibly jump in and with that maybe helping anglers and owners to loose less money...

Great to see Bluewater setting the standard. All other foreign fisheries need to follow their example.

I note that where I live (Kent) there are currently 11 cases in a population of 1.654 million people. Worse times to come though no doubt.

We at Fishing Ferry would also like to announce that in the event the government restrict travel from Dover to Calais we will issue a credit for future travel or a full refund.

We hope that travel doesn't get restricted and people can still go on their carp fishing holiday to France but if it did we are here to help in anyway we can.

Thanks

Bill's Lake has also posted...

We have taken a decision here at Bill's Lake to put our angler's minds at rest about their forthcoming holidays.
If the borders are closed due to Coronavirus and you are unable to travel out on your due date of departure, we will either;

- Move your holiday to a date later in the year where possible;
- Move your holiday to next year; or
- Make a full refund

All payments due must continue as normal up until the date of your holiday. Of course we hope it will not come to this and that you will be able to come and enjoy your holiday with us as planned. Looking forward to seeing you all soon, stay safe and wash your hands!

With the french government announcing that all none essential businesses open to the public must close how does this impact private lakes such as the ones we are all booked on?

I'm hoping as they are exclusively booked privately and not open to the general public that they are not included?

Can any lake owners clarify please?

If you look at most fisheries websites/Facebook it's like Corona virus isn't happening. No mention of it.

Bit of a shocker imo.

If they are told to close their doors to visitors then how can they not refund people?

Surely it is like any other holiday that gets cancelled because of the Government's actions - you claim off your insurance. Is every airline, hotel etc refunding your money?

in some countries if epedemic is declared refunds must be made by law... now if that is posible or companies will declare bankruptcy or find another way out is another matter... that is why many countries requaire travel agancies to have an insurance for such cases but than again insurance companies can declare bankroptcy etc...

We have just spoken to Bill at Bill's Lake and he has just has a meeting with the local mayor about the classification of essential businesses to be closed. The mayor has said that all commerce business/shops are closed but businesses like Bill's Lake are still ok to be open for business.

So basically all French lakes are still open as usual... hope this helps.

What makes you think lakes have funds to give back to people? It is the same as any other holiday, you claim off your travel insurance. The only problem that would occur is if you've gone to a lake that isn't correctly registered.

Fisheries rely on paying customers. If you treat your customers like cash cows and do nothing other than fob them off then their reputation will take a hit. It'll not take too many unhappy keyboard warriors to see to that.

Other fisheries are doing refunds, moving booking dates etc

I personally would be more than happy to take later booking even if it is after a year or two... If lake owner is trying to resolve this in civilised way.. Telling anglers of to take it up to insurance is far from that in my opinion... It is more than clear now that at least april&may booking will have problems...

Most fisheries and booking agencies will have in their Terms & Conditions a clause that covers them in the eventuality of this type of event so they don't have to refund you. Then it is up to you to claim on your insurance. All insurances are different but generally they should pay out IF you took the policy out before the Coronavirus issue started.

Some venues are offering holiday date changes and refunds even if they are covered by their Terms & Conditions and they are doing this to help their customers IF they can afford to do so.

Let's hope that France or the ports don't go into full lockdown and we can carry on as normal.

So it appears that some lakes are offering refunds and others telling their clients to claim from their holiday insurance. Most lakes expect the balance payment around 8 weeks prior to the holiday so what will anglers do in the coming weeks if their chosen lake is one that does not offer refunds ? They face the dilemma of paying several hundred additional pounds knowing that there is not much chance of getting anything back should the borders become closed.

I personally have already paid a balance payment for a week at the end of April with a lake that is so far stating that you should ensure that you have comprehensive insurance.

The problem that I see for lake owners that take the stance of not being prepared to provide refunds is that their clients will not make the balance payments for fear of losing even more money....

I agree , it's gonna affect the fishery owners both ways , if they offer a full refund fair play , but those that don't offer a refund are going to end up with just deposits but that could mean 50% you lose and 50% they lose , we'll see how many ‘reputable' fisheries do decide to refund , at least that way the angler will be happy

The only obvious choice on pending fishing trips abroad has to be an understanding between the customer and owner, if the balance hasn't been paid then an agreement should be, pay on arrival if it's possible to go.

I wouldn't be happy if an owner said, sorry we are open so it's your problem, claim on your insurance, if you can't get here. By rights if the country concerned is in lockdown, then you have to stay indoors, not sitting beside a lake fishing and a registered recreational business shouldn't be trading!

I would still love to go on my trip if there is a possibility however my instincts tell me there is not much chance given that France is only a few days behind what is happening in Spain.

I will post on here the outcome including the lake owners stance when it comes to reimbursement or not.

We're supposed to be going out on the 6th June for a week.
Small fishery, we've visited it a few times now and have become firm friends with the owner. Have paid in full.
I've "casually" broached the subject with her regarding a possible curtailment due to ferry/tunnel closures and she has responded thus...... "Obviously you will get your week at some point hopefully the week you've booked. x" so I'm assuming that she'll roll the week over for us.

We were due to start our first week of a 2-week stay on Saturday 14th March. Rang the owner to cancel and he told me, No problem. Come back when you can.

Nobody seems to know how long this crisis is likely to last. Most pundits are suggesting spring 2021, or until an effective vaccine is available. Who knows? Certainly not that prize vvanker pillock Piers Morgan.

It doesn't necessarily need a "new" antiviral drug to combat this virus.
I watched a talking head US Prof yesterday on possible drugs to tackle this virus. Remdesivir- A drug developed for Ebola originally is very promising he said.

There's already been papers written that are highly sceptical of Remdesivir. Likely the Prof. you mention is on Gilead's payroll, makes sense for him to be positive about it.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter. Just got to try and stay as healthy as possible; hydrated, balanced diet, good sleep, be as clean as you can be & see what happens.

Here is the official statement from Abbey Lakes.

As being one of the oldest player in the fishing world for the last 20 years, we feel it's important to officialise our statement regarding the actual holiday issues linked to the COVID-19 and invite all other french fisheries to follow the initiative in order to treat all anglers equally wherever they've booked their holidays in France !
We all know the actual situation and we all know it's changing fast but for this reason we would like to confirm that we will try to support financially as much as we can our booked anglers.
This statement will only concern (for the moment) next 30 days, which means all booking from now till 18th of April. If french borders get closed or if french adminstration asks us to close the complex or if we are not able anymore to provide the right qualitative service we've done till now towards our anglers , we will close the complex and propose those concerned anglers to refund their balance amount as we won't be able to postpone their angling session later this year as we are already fully booked.
Regarding the serious cashflow issue we will encounter by applying this statement we will be able to refund your balance amount at 50% at your request and the other 50% begin september which will give us the time to claim back all our VAT reimbursement. I hope this makes sense for everyone and that you can also understand our side of the situation.
Regarding coming balance payments due normally 10 weeks before arrival we invite you to pay them as usual bearing in mind now that if the situation evoluates in the future we will continue to apply same rules described above. If you still don't feel confident with this official statement we will allow our anglers booked between 18th of April and 06th of June to pay their balance amount in euros at arrival.
Fishing at Abbey is not only being after big fish but it's also being part of a real and strong community. So lets us all stick together and let us all beat this f** situation all together !
Don't worry...be ABBEY...✌️

Just read this

Brussels had announced earlier on Monday it had proposed closing the EU's borders to stop the spread of coronavirus but said a decision would not be made until the next day.

The UK's Foreign Office said the UK is not included in the closure and told Britons in mainland Europe to continually monitor travel advice as it is changing rapidly.

Doesn't effect us yet but I bet it will soon

As it currently stands all travel between all Schengen EU Countries (border less with France like Germany, Belgium etc) is banned including Switzerland which is part of this border less Schengen agreement but not in the EU.

However, the UK isn't part of this agreement and doesn't fall within this restriction as we have a border so all UK to France crossings via the ferries and tunnel are still open and as normal. There are some on-board restrictions to passenger numbers and some operators have a limited timetable.

If your French lake is still open for business (they are currently not legally forced to close) and the roads are currently open and unrestricted within France and most fuel stations are now only operating a pay at the pump service but as far as we see the situation it's business as usual.

We recommend that you take as many provisions as you can so you don't have the visit supermarkets etc but if you do need to, the venue should be able to print you off a document entitling you to travel to stock up on provisions without any travel issues from the French police.

Hope this helps as there are many differing reports on what is closed. Things may change daily so keep an eye on the social channel for all the crossing operators.

Latest...........

On 16 March, the French Government announced that the EU would suspend travel between the EU and non-European countries for an initial period of 30 days from midday 17 March. The French Government confirmed that these restrictions will not apply to UK nationals. We will update our advice with details of any EU measures when confirmed.

Pants ............. That is NOT helpful for anybody to make the sensible descision not to go , or try to make an insurance claim.

Moving on from that , it also opens the question about who actually made the payments , in the case of our group of four , I made all payments to the lake , and have now had it confirmed by my bank that it only covers the account holders portion of any monies paid...........

Perhaps in future we should all look at some sort of 'group' policy.

On a positive , having been negative about P&O's lack of info , they have now said they will offer an alternative travel date to be taken this year without any further costs.

It is very much a mixed message from the French Authorities. As a UK passport holder you can enter the country but once there travel is restricted to essential journeys only ie food shopping and seeking medical help. They say this will be enforced by fines. So I guess you have every chance of being stopped and fined. Toll roads could be a very easy target as they are unlikely to be the road of choice for allowable travel.

Essential travel with very good reason yes... Not for fishing... And even that not everywhere... Ffs people france is on shut down only allowing buying food&medice etc to save peoples lives and you are still thinking about traveling... Hospitals are full.. They are setting up amry hospitals etc... Who wants to travel to a country like that and potentialy end up in worst case scenario if aacident or something happens not to mention you can get infected just by paying toll and bring it back to your family even if you stay isolated on lake...

If this was Ebola there would be no questions asked..... but for the majority of us the worst corona will be is a mild illness. Vulnerable groups identified being the exception.

These are the ones needing protection and the ones being hospitalized.

Everything our government set out yesterday is to slow down hospital admissions for corona cases, if people ignore this advice then the NHS will be overwhelmed. In France people ignored advice and their health service is being overwhelmed.

Hence the travel restrictions now in France.

Current advice -

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/france
There is an ongoing outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) in France. The French Government outlined new measures on 16 March to stem the spread of coronavirus, including restricting the movement of people from midday 17 March for 15 days to journeys that are absolutely necessary, such as food shopping, seeking medical care, journeys to work where working from home is not possible, or exercising. The French Government has said it will enforce these measures and fine those who are not compliant. The French Government will provide further guidance on how these measures will be enforced. Travellers should follow instructions of the French authorities.

On 16 March, the French Government announced that the EU would suspend travel between the EU and non-European countries for an initial period of 30 days from midday 17 March. The French Government confirmed that these restrictions will not apply to UK nationals. We will update our advice with details of any EU measures when confirmed.

So, you'll not be going to a french venue any time soon...

Coronavirus: Britons urged to avoid non-essential travel abroad

British nationals should avoid all non-essential foreign travel to tackle the spread of coronavirus, the Foreign Office has advised.

The travel restrictions will be in place for 30 days initially but could be extended, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab told the House of Commons.

The advice reflects the pace at which other countries are bringing in border controls in response to the pandemic.

But the travel ban is in place till April 1st so this stops travelling to fisheries.

I have not claimed back my fees as the venue has told me to come back as soon as it is possible with no further costs. I think that is fair enough and as far as I am concerned he is welcome to hold on to my money as he may need it to see him through what will clearly be a sticky season for both him and many other lake owners in France. This situation is unprecedented so we are all playing it by ear, clients and venues alike.

Some are extending the season, if possible for this year, and starting earlier next year and closing later. Some individual anglers or pairs might be able to pick up odd spaces and where some lakes have a rest in August will stay open.

Not sure it is really down to lake owners to do anything in the way of alternate dates / refunds.
They have running costs and shopping to buy ..............

When you go on holiday ........you take out insurance and that covers it.

Hotels don't phone you and offer this and that ............... You claim.

I have just had to cancel a French trip due to commence 28th March ..........Fully paid up 8 weeks ago.
For an insurance claim ,I could not cancel it until 17th March when the FCO actually pulled their finger from their behind and put the travel restriction in place.

I have also ( of my own accord ) pulled the plug on a trip to a well known pleasure angling venue in the South West, due to take place in May. Cost to my group for that ....£85 each in non recoverable deposits , as the full balance is due next week , and at this time there is no ruling in place. I just don't want the venue coping another grand and adding to the plight of the insurance companies , should I be able to claim in the next few weeks.........
The venue has drawn up a lengthy Covid 19 rules page , which basically in our opinion does not meet the criteria of the package offered at the time of our booking, nor does it fully understand just how bad things will become with regards to travel and self isolation in the coming weeks.

ATM France have stopped unnecessary travel which currently ends on April 1st. If this gets extended then it's off but if it's not and there are no UK restrictions then who knows.

They have been mentioning that it may be extended another 2 weeks but as with our situation it can change daily and hourly.

If your in the 'at risk' group then you should just forget it for the foreseeable future. But even this advice might change as everybody young and old might soon be considered at risk.

Just returned to France via the tunnel and other than check on why/where I was going at the border no further sign of Gendarmes or checks at all. More local checks are happening everywhere however. Roads are empty other than lorries and the whole thing is being taken seriously enough that it is possible the French will get on top of the virus quite quickly. The problem is that when they do the UK is likely to be at the height of infection and I suspect that will result in cross border traffic coming to a standstill. I think that we are likely to see the first half of the season written off and looking on the dark side there is a real chance that the whole season will be scuppered. A nightmare !

As promised earlier, now posting the outcome of my lake booking for the last week of April this year. The lake owner at Napoleon lakes contacted me on Saturday explaining that their policy was to not offer refunds (we have already paid the full amount as within 8 weeks). However what he was prepared to offer was an alternative week in the future, we are now booked for September 2023, I think this was a fair compromise. The lake owner gets to keep our money to help him through this tough period but ultimately loses the income from weeks in the future where he would normally be sold out.

2023 is a long time to wait so will forget this trip now for a few years... If the virus passes quicker than expected and a trip to France is actually possible this year somewhere in June/July we will be on the lookout for opportunities to lakes that have vacancies.

Some are just taking your money while others are being more considerate and making the effort, it's pot luck who your booked with. Lots a people getting burnt by fisheries feeding resentment and reputation damage.... not that they all care... plenty of punters available to replace unhappy customers.

It's just how it is.

And yes, I do have a better quality insurance to cover my holiday.

I don't spose the fisheries reputation will matter when they've gone out of business, everyone going on a holiday either fishing or otherwise should have adequate insurance, then no one loses out, saying that hats off to the lakes that are refunding but I really think they shouldn't have too.

We don't have a strictly lockdown, but a no contact rule over here in germany. Not more than two people together outside so fishing alone is still possible.

They must be testing the right people and getting them early. Can you request a test or are they targeting specific group's?

Whilst i would always recommend travel Insurance it doesn't justify a lake owner keeping your money in these circumstances. They in turn should have their own cancellation cover.

The Insurance Companies are not just automatically paying out and a travel policy should be viewed as the last resort, the travel operator, airline, hotel or venue provider should be offering a solution first.

Seems a few countries have a markedly lower mortality rate per number of infections than others. Germany, Austria, Switzerland are 3. Sounds like you're doing the same as us so no idea why that is.

We are not testing ,unless people are hospitalized. So the death rate in England is higher because many infected people are not being diagnosed. Which is why social distancing is imperative. I've seen so many morons in groups you wouldn't credit it. The trouble is they will infect many people in high risk groups, not just their stupid mates.

Maybe it's a privacy issue. It's got to be easier people coming forward for tests if they've been in contact with someone recently. Rather than the person that's ill trying to remember and then authorities trying to find people.

Get real.............
Where are you getting this ridiculous idea from.
Please expand on you previous experience of these mystical refunds !!!!

When you book a holiday ...............

It is down to YOU to take correct cover............ NOT THE SUPPLIER.

From the lakes booking pages to the ferry and tunnel ..............BIG QUESTION ...DO YOU WANT INSURANCE.

It cannot be any more self explanatory and SIMPLE.

If you were talking about your summer holiday being cancelled ............. you would go straight to your insurance policy and not even contemplate trying to get a refund from the hotel , or start bitching about the hotel.

None of you can justify blaming the lake owners .............

I would imagine the 50% non returnable deposits is 'their insurance'.......... Obviously enough to cover a no show.

Then that opens up a whole new can of worms , as to how much you are initially paying for a weeks fishing if owners are settling for 50% non refundable for a no show ??

As I said earlier there have been many posts about why 50% is the norm in fishing trips....Personally I do not think that is right.

OK BigYelloCoc you obviously know better than everyone else so we will all just bow to your superior knowledge... It is not as black and white as you say, although I do agree that anyone booking a holiday without appropriate travel insurance is foolish.

Under any Insurance policy a claim is dealt with under it's own merits and there are countless caveats for cancellation under travel policies.

I know of two parties of anglers who are in this position. The first one, the owner decided to shut his lake just a week before their trip before the FCO listed France and all but essential travel was banned. On the second one a group of lads decided not to travel for fear of getting stuck over there. In both cases the Insurers aren't getting involved as 1) it was the venues decision to close and 2) they could have traveled but chose not to.

Like I said, it's not black and white in every case....nothing mystical about that, just fact!

The success or otherwise of claims for losses or costs suffered as a result of travel disruption will depend on the individual policy taken out, when it was taken out, who cancelled the trip and the reason why.

You are arguing against yourself there....Totally different scenarios.

An owner shutting his lake prior to a fully paid trip is a different kettle of fish.
That is then between him and his paid group.

Similar thing .....My Campanile hotel booking has been refunded directly by them ....... because they were not allowed to fulfill my booking under French laws...... No insurance claim required.

P&O have offered a credit note for alternate travel.

My travel insurance came into play 10 days prior to my trip.......
Prior to that We would also have taken a massive hit ............due to Government delays in outlining policy.

Second point is sadly not valid for the insurance argument. For whatever reason ....They chose not to go .

Again I have pulled out of a trip planned for May ...........No bans in place yet.....our choice that we cannot risk what will be happening.........No insurance involved , because we have cancelled....We are out of pocket on that.

Based on these cries for lake owners to pay ...........Nobody would ever take out insurance again.

Heres a positive thought............

Why don't lake owners deal with a complete package ........... to include full insurance cover for any eventuality.

I suspect the reason they don't is because it would become glaringly obvious to anglers just how much insurance they need to pay.

Thinking logically should both parties not have insurance,

Personal insurance to cover the individual not being able to complete the holiday due to their own circumstances.

Lake owners / Hotels / transport to cover them not being able to accommodate guests?

In my opinion, if you have paid for a service and that service isn't provided then it should be refunded, simple.

If you purchased a train ticket and that was cancelled due to network issues would you expect a refund?

Agree but if you couldn't make it to the station? You wouldn't expect a refund from the train company. You need to be able to apportion blame to a party, rely on goodwill or have insurance that covers the particular issue.

Yes a decent Holiday company, (fishing or otherwise) should have their own policy covering cancellations, not necessarily ad-hoc cancellations, (which is why they take a deposit) but for disaster situations, (fire, flood etc). I will wager however that most of them don't.

having said that, you can bet cover for infectious diseases would be excluded...!

Nope wouldn't expect a refund if I didn't turn up, but in this scenario,

If there is no travel between UK/France, that is the operators issue and they need to refund and then claim.

If the Lake is shut, that is the owners issue so they need to refund and then claim.

If the lake is open and I can travel but decide not to travel then that is 100% my problem.

If the lake is open but cant travel because of restrictions then I would fully expect to get my travel refunded but the lake booking I would have t take on the chin as it isnt the owners fault I cant make it to the lake.

I agree with everything you've said mate , luckily I do my own thing usually in France so won't be losing out , I'd be very pissed off if I'd paid half towards a booking and received nothing back , can the French fishery owners claim loss of earnings like we are doing over here ? Seems a more sensible idea

Yes they can claim loss of earnings as the government has stopped all unnecessary travel . They can also claim 80% of anybody's wages that they are employing. Only thing is they have to be fully registered and filling in a French tax return to claim anything.

That is not exactly true. At the moment there is nothing in place for either a micro-bic or an entrepreneur although there could be an announcement tonight. There could be 1500 euro's available next month however the exact requirements to be met have yet to be announced. Loss of earnings is not covered.

It will open a hornets nest as I am fairly certain that a lot of fisheries pay their bailiffs off the record. Also been too busy following what is happening here in regard to Government support, so the French Government have offered the same assistance as we have here in providing 80% of wages to employees?

So you agree that if French authorities are stopping travelling to a fishing destination that the fishery should refund, French law stopping the booking so its exactly the same scenario. No insurance claim required.

Thank you for clarifying that fisheries should refund bookings... well that's that cleared up.

All French fisheries are required to be French registered and have Siret number. They are therefore required to abide by French Law not English Law. Anyone who has made a payment to a French venue regardless of making the payment to an English bank are entitled to a full refund.

All business's in France have been given free business rates, free overdrafts, free loans ( no interest) and 1500€ for loss of earnings.
If a business is registered in France it will come under French law and would have to abide by the law of the country it is trading in.

Just to clarify a couple of points from your post if I may. Utility bills and other costs that the French government has said they would help with, including the mentioned loans and overdrafts are just deferred debt and not in any way compensation for total loss of earnings. The 1500 euro's mentioned is something that clarification is due to be issued on on March 31st. It is a payment of UP TO 1500 euro's and the exact criteria of eligibility for that payment and how much is yet to be decided. To date their is no help, as far as I am aware of, for extended loss of income just schemes to defer debt to a later stage.

Surely lots of commercial fisheries have stocking levels that are entirely dependent on the fact that there are anglers chucking vast quantities of quality bait in every day of the year.
I wonder how weights and general fish health will be impacted by the various lockdowns home and abroad as the weeks pass. Sure they can feed the fish, but with no revenues coming in, I doubt many fishery owners will be able to afford to make up for the lack of bait going in.

Possibly on some venues but I think a lot don´t depend on vast quantities of bait being introduced. When I started my venue many years ago and not having that many anglers in the early days, I used to feed pellet and as years passed, most anglers used about 10kg of boilies a week (advised maximum allowed), 10 anglers x 10kgs, the equivalent of 100kgs, the cost of 100kgs of pellet is not that much really.

Many of the best fisheries in france are booked at least 2 to 3 years in advance. Not sure i would be keen on someone holding on to my heard earned for 3 years in advance.
It's tricky, but l feel the biggest problem is the 50% deposit in advance. It would make sense that if your booking is at least18 months in advance to take a nominal fee to hold the place, which is then deducted from when the deposit is due. If deposit not paid, place is lost. Doesn't help much at the moment, tho.

We all need to get real. This is the real deal. A pandemic of an unknown virus against which we have no defenses except our own immune systems. Until a safe and effective vaccine is developed, manufactured and distributed, none of this is going away and a lot more people are going to die. None of this is going to be measured in weeks. There is a long difficult road ahead for us all. Unfortunately for all us anglers our tickets, licences, memberships and holiday bookings are all insignificant, unimportant personal losses. This is going to have to play out to nature's rules whatever Trump and that Brazilian fellow nincompoop think. Sorry but that's how I see it. A lot of bright people have been modelling this for decades

If you have the Corona virus you have a 98% chance of survival.
Of those who have died 91% were elderly and had 2 or more existing medical conditions. 150,000 have died worldwide from a population of 8 billion. I think we need a bit of perspective.

Agree perspective is needed. Don't know where your figures come from, but using them and your logic this is the perspective view. World wide 160 million deaths, UK 1.2 million deaths. No problems there then.

The trouble with this virus is it is still an unknown quantity, and who it effects and how badly. A girl i work with her brother had it he is a healthy 50 year old bloke no known health issues, non smoker ran every day played five a side football every week.

Three weeks ago he got mildly ill after about two weeks deteriorated badly got taken to hospital and put in induced coma and ventilator for days, fortunately he was brought round and appears to be making a good recovery.

Someone that works on the other shift lost his mum to it on friday, unbeknown to us he had been in close contact with his mum and may have brought it into work yet he has no symptoms but about 10 days ago and engineer off the same shift went off with severe temperature and cough struggling for breath he couldn't do anything for two days just bed ridden, now slowly recovering but hasn't been tested, yet this guy is in early 60's has had several major health problems including a stroke last year.

Another engineers wife who works at tesco, had her friend who worked alongside her become ill last week all the symptoms went home a couple of days later passed away in her sleep, almost certainly a corona virus death that wasn't recorded.

Id be surprised if anything gets back to normal this year with foreign traveling and fishing.

Unknown or not. The figures speak for themselves.
Malaria kills around 2 to 3 million yearly.
Hunger kills 9 million.
Aids 700,000 deaths yearly.
Tuberculosis 1.5 million deaths yearly.
Dirty drinking water account for almost half a million deaths each year.
Again I say...... perspective.

Problem is there is no vaccine or any other solution for this virus at the moment.
No good sticking your head in the ground is it?
We have to get through this and stick to the rules, simple as that.

Add Covid19which attacks the weak and vulnerable. Hungry, thirsty people carrying parasites and the many other third world health problems with no health infrastructure in their nations. What are the figures likely to be then This has a long way to go. Does anybody know what is going to happen? No. Got a vaccine? No. This is not going to be over in weeks or months. We are still in the initial phase. With the exception of aids, we have effective treatments for the other diseases mentioned, including diseases transmitted in dirty water and people have a level of resistance to them, for Covid we don't. I'm not saying we won't prevail, we will but this is not some minor inconvenience delaying people's holiday. Glad you have such a detached perspective on so many millions of deaths.

Spot on, Lance & Robby. Perspective is all very well but until this thing has run its course quoting perspective is meaningless.

That might be the case but UK anglers will not be fishing in France in May, travel restrictions will still be in place then either here or there.

And the problem will be they'll be people booked on lakes and the lakes will be open but we can't travel there.
That's not the lake owners fault he'll be open for business so UK anglers may have to lose deposits and payments?

Exactly, except I don´t think many fisheries in France will seriously believe that they will be open in May and I don´t think many people who booked in May will have paid their holiday balance in March.

@oldfellah. What's the situation at your lake moulin Du mee.....regarding your shutdown ? Are you refunding full booking? Keeping deposits?? or changing bookings affected to alternative dates ? Or are you telling people to claim through there travel insurance..I take it with so many regulars returning yearly to your venue you have looked after them ?? Wouid be interesting to hear what lake owners are looking after there customers and what ones are telling them to claim through insurance or keeping deposits etc...my trip to la Saule Paquot has been rearranged with no hesitation by the owner Tony who couldn't do enough to help his customers in this Coronavirus shutdown..

If anglers can claim through their travel insurance then that's great for all concerned and not to be sniffed at. In our case we have carried any deposits paid over to the next booking. As most of our guests are regulars that suits them fine. I would add that without exception our anglers have been understanding of the situation and extremely helpful. There is a lot said about the importance of fisheries looking after their anglers but perhaps it would be nice to hear of the many anglers that have such a good relationship with their fishery that they are thinking of their plight in this difficult time. I have been inundated with supportive messages and even had a couple of anglers offer to help with the cost of feeding the fish during the shutdown. As our anglers are now friends of long standing in the main we are working through this difficult phase together.

I would also add that the big losers financially are the fisheries who have a total loss of income during the shutdown. It will not surprise me if a good many venue's will not be in a position to weather the lock down period. Very sad for all concerned.
And perhaps most important of all is to stay safe and hope that this bloody plague doesn't take anyone dear to you.

It's good to hear of a decent business doing right by its customers who behave in a similar manner
