Well it's happened to me now, 2 of my reels (Big Baitrunners) have stopped clicking on the drag.
I had a chat with Felindre and they said it's probably just a spring on the spool, rather than the reel itself.
As this seems to be a common problem, I wondered if anyone else had found a way to fix it i.e. where to buy springs and is it a fiddly job? Felindre said replacing the spring is tricky, but as this is going to happen from time to time I wouldn't mind doing it myself if it isn't too hard.

This happens on one of my spools for my Shimano arenos, tried to fix it but found it quite fiddly and just lost patience as its only on my spare spool anyway.

I sent 4 of the XTC5500 back to Felindre to sort out clickers on all of them. Came back but within a few months they all had same problem re-appear

Mine have lasted about a year and I fish every other week, that said I'm lucky to catch a handful of fish in a season!
Can you remember what they charged you per spool? Love the reels otherwise but a silent drag is just wrong. Baitrunners click fine though, it's just the main drag.

Just reading a couple of threads including this one.
I said a couple of years ago about the poor design of the new shimano clickers on the spools, also it seems people having issues with broken line guards and line getting behind the spools too.
I really do think Shimmi's standards have dropped along with their prices to compete with the likes of Penn for example.
Having used Shimano for years way back I now wouldn't go back to them. Ok they look lovely but to me function over form so I have a set of old daiwa infinity br's which will probably last forever.

Common fault on shimano reels...gave up on my techniums doing this...

You just need to bend the metal spring backwards on both sides.. so there is more tension.
Difficult for me to explain in english and cant draw it in here..

Do you mean the metal clip with what look like wings either side? Do you push the wings back toward the inner face of the spool body or outwards? I'll try and get a pic of what I mean later if it helps. Cheers

Penn reels nowadays, are a far cry from the quality they used to be. The U.S. Models were decent reels but, Penn, like many other manufacturers, have chosen the economy route.

This works a treat. Reels are clicking hard once again. I've bent the springs back as far as possible so reckon they'll last a fair while before needing doing again.
First one was tricky but it's a 5 minute job once you've got the hang of it.

Will just update to say they clicked hard for a few months before I had to bend them again. Shame cos otherwise great reels but I fish a lot at night and need to hear the click when playing fish. Sold them on.

Thanks all, finally got around top opening them up to see whats going on. In my case the spring itself is broken:
I can see from one of my spare spools what it should look like - guessing yours is a different model or revision ?
Does anyone have any details for where you can get these springs from ? ....the Shimano leaflet in the box only has the breakdown for the real and lists the spool as a whole part. I guess I can cannibalise my spare spool but this is a trivial fix for a component that should really be pennies. Agree its a bad design - hopefully I can source the springs from somewhere ?

Contact the tackle box in dartford Kent they was ordering some clicker kits spring ,clicker plate and screw from Holland when I spoke to them last week you can't buy the springs on heir own from Shimano service centre in Nottingham I was told this last week when I spoke to them or have a look on eBay shimano felindre were selling some clicker kits which might fit your spools drop them a message on eBay on their

Thanks - Ive sent an email - hopefully I can get a few spares too.
Swapped over the ones from my spare spools for now - bit fiddly but found it easier to assemble on the top of the screw driver and hold the spool above, so gravity holds the spring and screw and bracket together. You have to be careful as theres also a tiny shim that goes around the screw thread and inside the turns on the spring.
They're called "torsion springs" - tried googling for them to no avail - need a micrometer to measure the thickness of the spring - could probably make one with spring wire too - with a bit of patience
I'll try tacklebox on Monday too - but will probably need to sell a kidney for whatever they knock them out for - you never know though - could be pleasantly surprised LOL

Sorry to revive old thread stu but can you remember how the spring was bent? to increase the tension ive got an idea but i can no longer see the pics from the thread of how the spring was bent

sorry mate can't remember I sold them on a while back cos of this, bending the springs back only worked for a few months then they had to be done again.
I'm sure someone else will know.

having thught about it im pretty sure you bend the arms in towards eachother. the more you bend them in the trickier it is to fit them back but it gets easier with practice.

All the service /upgrade guys out there surley its possible to modify the spools and fit a different clicker system, for example I owed the fox mags for a while they had the traditional spring type. Is it someway possible to put these in the spool of shimano ones

apparently the clickers (stronger spring) on the older models can be fitted and will fix the problem. i think it only affects power aero, ultegra ci4 and the new techs.
