Hi - Thinking of investing in one of these (used to love my now defunct smartcast) but need some basic advice
Will be primarily using for quick swim mapping and feature finding on new venues / finding holes in the weed on infested lakes - will always be used in conjunction with a lead/marker and not for 'fish finding' . . .
1 - Which model do I go for - Pro + or Chirp + . . .other than the colour is it worth getting the Chirp model / spending the extra to future proof?
2 - What rod set ups do you use? For smartcast (as the head was relatively light) I used a soft 2.5tc rod with a 5010 baitrunner loaded with fireline floating braid. Would I be better using the spod rod (with tapered leader) and just clip on as & when required?
3 - Nervous about linking to my 'actual' day to day / work / life mobile phone and would never attach to the casting rod itself as that has disaster written all over it. Would it be better to buy a cheap 2nd hand 7-10" tablet and stick this on a banksitck?
4 - What kind of power do these use (the head itself) and how long does it last between charges etc . .

I dont like the idea of having it on my rod either ! I bought a cheap little phone tripod and set that up the boat next to me or on the floor if i am casting.

Referring to the 12v boat mounted transducer jobs mate, Wi-fish, lowrance etc.
To be fair i have never used the deeper chirp but was interested, some of the stuff i read brought me to the conclusion it probably wasn't worth the money.

. . .my last sonar experience was with the smartcast over 15yrs ago and the crappy but similar knockoff 'lucky' fishfinder attached to my rarely used lake reaper baitboat . . .to be honest both were fine for feature finding (when backed up with a marker float so anything that's more stable (in terms of signal in chop and at relative range etc) will be a bonus . . .

I've used a Lowrance Chirp 4 with my old RT4 and at present own a Deeper Chirp which I tow behind my new RT4 (until I upgrade to Dragonfly/Chirp on the boat). I have had a Pro+ for years and use it from time to time. I have looked at the Chirp and the main (or only) reason I can really see for me to change would be that the Pro+ only works in water deeper than 3ft, the chirp is deeper than 1ft. This is not often a problem but has caught me out once or twice on new waters but soon resolved with a lead around as well 
If I was buying from new I would get the Chirp but see no point in upgrading.
I use a spod rod setup to cast it. Small local trips I use my phone (not on the rod, don't trust the phone holders) but for weeks away in France i take the 10" tablet anyway and it works really well with that stuck on a tripod.

I have no exp of the DPro but forgot to say, the Chirp comes into its own re bottom hardness. Have a nosey at the latest Carp Lounge youtube vid, Chirp Wifish v Dragonfly, quite informative re the differences.

So far been impressed with it.
I use my spod rod with 40lb power-pro straight thru. Bit overkill but I don't want to loose it.
Use my phone (I phone8+) to view it. I use a storm pole with the Gardner camera adapter and my normal phone holder I use for photos. This enables to you to have it at a decent height and tilt it for better viewing.
Also the higher up the better the signal.
Used my for 2hrs each time and it's still had plenty of charge. Does seem to use the phone battery fairly quickly tho.
Says on the tin they work up to 100mtrs but I can't cast it that far (can anyone ?) so can't comment on that.

Sorry to jump on the thread but Snapper can you tell me the difference in actual using the old software and the new ? Im still on the old not sure if there is any real advantage ?? so should try the new ??
And in answer to the thread if funds allowed I would definitely buy the new chirp as the shallow water working would benefit me in shallow rivers

Delivered today on Amazon Prime...paid £290 but this included night light and a couple of extras (mask and flask) so rrp with a couple of freebies. Angling stores doing them for £275ish but by the time you've bought the night light as an extra it's the same minus the freebies...
Amazon were selling the same 'bundle' new but in damaged packaging for £248 which is arguably the best price I found however was a little bit twitchy about this (5yr warranty may be affected?) plus they are offering 5 months interest free on the full price so I paid the extra £40 for peace of mind etc.....

You can extend the range to 200m+ using a TP link wifi extender powered by a power bank , some chaps have been testing it on another forum and works well and also cheap.

....Will also be using a trace...had catfish strikes on smartcast on more than one occasion! As for lobbing out £300 your right it's daft but then so is losing a baitboat in the reeds 250yds away....basically I'll be having a swim....!

It was on offer for £239 at Johnson Ross a couple of weeks ago, I was wondering what to do and ended up ordering a Pro+ winter pack from Amazon marketplace for £179. When it arrived the bloody screw in connectors were both missing! Sent it back and went on JR, chirp was back up to £279

You should try wrapping up 5 wraps to bait up a close in spot then having totally forgotten this put the Deeper back on to see what you can find at 60 yards, been there done that

Hi All,
As you all know myself and Peter Andrew Simmons have been working on a way to extend the range of the Deeper and Raymarine without modifying the device.
We come up with this method between us and have shared the information so anglers don't have to spend hundreds of pounds on what is basically a £25 router.
Please see below a full guide on what is needed and how you change the settings to achieve over 200 Meters.
You need to buy the below 3 items and have access to a computer to change the settings of the router,

3. Power bank of your choice.
Guide
Step 1 - On your computer disconnect from your home network, depending how you are connected you can either turn off your WiFi or take out the LAN cable.
Step 2 - Power on the Tplink WR940N router and plug in the supplied LAN cable to LAN port 1 and then in to your computer. Wait a couple of minutes for your router to get a connection with your computer. Some times this is instant and sometimes it will take a minute or 2.
Step 3 - Open up your web browser, In my case I use chrome. In the web address bar put in http://tplinkwifi.net or you can also use 192.168.0.1 this will direct you to a log in screen.
Step 4 - Input admin for the username and admin for the password and click login.
Step 5 - Once you have logged in navigate to the left hand side of the screen and click on working mode, then change the working mode to range extender and click save. It will then ask you to confirm the selection and warn you that the router will reboot. Press ok and wait for the router to reboot.
Step 6 - Once the router has finished rebooting you will be faced with the login screen of the router again, input admin for both username and password and login again.
Step 7 - Once logged in navigate to the left hand side of the screen and click wireless, once wireless has been clicked you will be on the "connect to network" screen.
Step 8 - Power on your echo sounder, In my case I'm using a deeper pro +. I have placed the deeper in a bowl of water so it powers on you can also unscrew the top and connect a power cable which also keeps the device on. Once your device is powered on go back to your computer and click the survey button.
Step 9 - Once you have pressed the survey button a new window will appear and it will come up with all networks in range of your router, click connect next to the device you want to extend. This will then take you back to the connect to network screen and the SSID and MAC address will have been filled. You then need to go down to the password and change to the password that is needed for your device, for my deeper its 12345678. Then click save and wait for 30 seconds whilst the settings are saved.
Step 10 - Navigate to the left hand side of the screen and click extended network, add "_EXT" to the end of the SSID and click save. Wait another 30 seconds for the settings to be saved and then click off the internet browser.
Step 11 - Search on your phone/tablet for the extended WiFi network with "_EXT" on the end. Both SSID's will show up but you need to connect to the extension network to achieve the extended range. You then connect to the relevant app as you usually would.
Don't forget to connect back to your home network so you can continue using the internet as normal again on your computer.
I have listed the routers that has been tested so far below, if you manage to test another router with success please message me and I will add to the list.
Please note a lot of routers will work but the steps might vary slightly so I have put this guide up for the TPlink WR940N only.

I've ordered the parts up so we'll see, good reason for my RT4 to see the water...for the 1st time, only had it 9 months
I did have drop out issues with my Deeper on the turn last time, more or less at range, will be interested to see if this improves it.
I've ordered the parts up so we'll see, good reason for my RT4 to see the water...for the 1st time, only had it 9 months

Tried this out at the weekend & can confirm that its excellent at 26 wraps. No drop outs at all

apparently some routers dont work well from Amazon but all bought from Currys/pc world do work .

My pro+ keeps randomly disconnecting. It works in the edge but when cast out only 16 wraps it won't connect. Using the older app but also have the new one installed. Any ideas?

Bizarrely I ordered a router from amazon and it wouldn't let me do the changes but I thought it was me but it was from amazon so I'll send it back and try again

. . .so having used my chirp plus on a couple of different waters now I can report back the following . . .
1 - Range good - casting to spots up to 20 wraps (80yds) and the signal has been solid with no breaks in connectivity. Have been using in conjunction with a Galaxy Tab A8 (2019 model) on a tripod at chest level . . .
2 - Detail good - holes in the weed / clear patches on the bottom / shallow areas . . .all blindingly obvious (have been using the latest app) and much more accurate than the smartcast ever was in terms of lake bottom make up etc
3 - Visibility poor (physical location on the lake when read in conjunction with the tablet data) IMO the green chirp is hard to spot from 30yds out - as soon as you've watched it touch down and take your eyes off it can disappear . . have yet to attach the hi-viz yellow/night cap thingy (cos it looks a bit noddy) but may be forced to do so . .
4 - Def need to use in conjunction with a marker as previous - especially in areas with 'semi-fishable' weed
Overall pleased with kit and works perfectly on the sporadically used spod rod / tapered leader set up. . .

I've found this the best way to use one. I loop on the deeper and do a few casts to get a general feel for the swim. My lakes are weedy and it's quickly apparently which areas are a waste of time without needing to lead about. If I start seeing seeing three or four foot of weed I ignore that area unless it's a last resort. Once I've got a likely looking area I loop off the deeper and loop on a lead and then just lead about in that area. Definitely saves a lot of disturbance and aggro on an overnighter after work. I still don't think you can beat a lead and braid but these do speed up the process.

Re tried the mod this evening and it worked fine !!! also tested it on the lake nd it works a dream casting 120 wish yards and worked as it should do so a great little tip

Just added a raymarine pro 5 to my waverunner, and used a usb range extender powered directly from a powerbank and can confirm it works very well. Simpler than making one from a router .

Anyone else find that the update to the Deeper apps has broken the ability to use range extenders? Although your device can connect to the wifi the app will not connect with the Deeper device itself if you use a range extender. This is true even if you simply use the original SSID too so it's not related to the name.
