After some thoughts/recommendations on what products you use on your skin to stop insect bites? and also do you put anything on your clothes/Bivvy?

I suffer really badly with bites. My dad is even worse, his often get infected.
I tried the Avon years ago and for me personally it made absolutely no difference.
I then used Jungle Formula for a few years and whilst good, I did still get bites.
I then discovered Incognito, for me it gives pretty much a 100% success rate if I apply it properly. The downside is it's double the price of a lot of other stuff.
I bought a two pack of it and gave the second bottle to my dad and since then if he applies it properly he's noticed dramatically less bites.
So I guess if you don't suffer badly then it's probably not worth the extra, but if you do suffer then for me it's worth the extra.

Pretty much my own experience, Avon didn't stop bites at all but incognito is almost 100% effective, just remember to reapply regularly.

I live in one of the worst midge regions in scotland and avon skin so soft does work for me also smidge , however where mozzies are concerned incignito is the best , what works for one wont necessarily work for everyone.

BUT for midges STILL there is nothing better and that why they all use it in that Scottish training base well hard bstds !

I have a friend who is a mozzy magnet....he invested in a £9.99 anti mosquito watch from Amazon and problem solved for him, not a single bite since he's been wearing it. Might be a good alternative solution.

I think that the citronella has been removed from newer versions.
I keep having to search Original Skin so Soft on ebay to get the stuff with citronella in to keep mozzies at bay.

My club lake is horrendous for Mozzies, i have tried loads of diffrent creams etc. The incognito i have found the best so far.
Ive brought a Backpacker Thermacell. It runs on gas, its defiantly makes a diffrence, i haven't been bothered by the mozzies on my last 2 sessions i have used it.

Yes, but just make sure you don't do that with the version which has deet in it. It will ruin your clothes and bivvy , but is brilliant for getting rid of the bitey little buggers

one of my mates bought some on my recommendation and phoned me up saying it didnt work ? turns out he put it on and never re applied it
I talked him into giving it another chance making sure he set an alarm on his phone 5 hours he is now a convert and always saying how fantastic it is keeps a supply in his car and uses it on his 3 year old and all the family on outings in the park

Expedition 100+ inspect repellent spray from Millets.
Used it all over the world (and my body) with Excellent results. It's an oil based spray so stops ticks getting into you nether regions too so it's kind of 2-4-1.
It goes all over me and around the rim of by brolly too does a pretty decent job of keeping the blighters out.
It does stink though.
I've also used skin so soft, is very good but needs to be reapplied quite frequently so too much of a faff. But smells nice

Yep I've found incognito the best for me .... however what I would say is make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after use and before touching anything ... I had a rather hot c**k for ages after having a pee directly after using it 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

I think the BF 21 model is much better. The sealed bottom of the trailer, including all plumbing pipes, is a very good advantage. I didn't have any experience with Escape 21 models, but my friend bought a couple of these trailers for trailer rent park. It was all good first year. He got massive reports from his customers about cockroaches and rodents inside the cabin and between walls the second year. With the help of the proper Sunderland pest service https://ajverminatorpestcontrol.com/, he solved the problem. Still, we both think that problem was on the nonsealed bottom floor.

I know its an oldish thread but I have been using the last few years a Lifesystem portable insect Killer which is a misleading title for this little machine as it doesn't actually kill them it keeps them at bay.
I have never really had a problem with mosquito's but a few years ago I moved onto the big lake on our club ticket and they were relentless over there with all the trees and long marginal grasses and nailed me every time I went, a mate put me onto this little gadget who was fishing over there and he swore by it, for the few quid it was I bought one and whilst its in the bivvy switched on even with an open front I've had no more problems with the little buggers it omits a strange minty type smell whatever it is it works.

I have to carry steriod tablets with me as one mite makes rhe are tripple in size and extreamly painful, so with that im also always riasimg hot in the summer having to keep wrapped up.
Incognito repellent works wonders. I have the spray, soap (amazing soap to be fair, insence sticks, shower gel, suncream, and room refresher!

Get some tablets of cetirizine hydrochloride. Use a mozzy Zappa and still get bitten (but drastically less). The bites I do get do not itch one bit after about 10 minutes of taking one. I never leave without a strip.

I can vouch that your club lake is indeed the worst place I've ever fished, for mozzies. First time I ever set foot on the place, opened the car door and two flew in! By the end of that first trip, I looked like the elephant man lol. Started off on the Avon skin so soft - soft and fresh, but if anything it attracted them like a dinner bell. They laughed in the face of Jungle formula too. Eventually I ended up on something which claimed to be 100% deet, but the name escapes me, but it defo wasn't the Bens in the bright Orange bottle that big Nige had recommended to me. Whichever one it was, it worked really well!
The mozzies at that place are something else, like flying hyperdermic needles. I wouldn't mind, but I rarely get bitten anywhere else. Reckon they've got no taste buds there lol

Coat myself in skin so soft after a shower before going. In the evening apply smidge to exposed areas. Then Life System 100 deet on ankles and cuffs.

Cheers Ian - just bought one and a pack of refills and got 15% off (£18 posted) so should see me for most of my summer fishing . . .
Have been using the Wolf mozzie zapper but its nothing more than a glorified moth attractor so my usual bullet proof MAX Deet spray and some headache inducing coils have been doing the business . . .if I can negate these two items with this kit then fantastic!

There is the original Skin So Soft which has a decent amount of citronella in, and a newer version which has less or none and is not such a good repellent. It is difficult to find the original in the UK, but Avon Poland was still selling it.

Whatever amount of citronella never going to be as effective as deet if your exposed for a few hours.
In countries where malaria is prevalent they recommend products with 50% deet.
Though nothing is 100% foolproof garments with insect protection are also helpful.

I have used it in Greece USA

I got one last week after reading this, and two packs of refills. I used it for the first time Sunday night. I would guess that the two AA batteries that come with it, will last a long, long time... They only run a very small fan, it barely moves, so cannot be consuming much power. It's just enough to blow the repellent off of the pad. Does not smell much, certainly not offensive in any way, although the sound of the fan is just a little annoying.
I did not see a mozzie at all and did not get bit. Seemed to work well.

Sorry all been away in France last week and had this little unit running every evening and night when the mozzies were at their worst, didn't have one bite and the batteries nearly lasted all week which was about 12 hours running a day, I had it positioned near the back of the bivvy hanging from the zip on the rear vent.

incogneto is pretty good it works 90% ish but if you want 100% protection and not have to keep reapplying the expedition 100 is whats required .If i am going somewhere roasting sweating on a long trip where they are really bad the ex 100 is what i use .Never had a bite with this stuff and it lasts all day.Its a pain keep having to reapply you often forget and dont realise till you have been bit .Sometimes use the incogneto locally during the day and then put the proper stuff on when i get my head down for a long kip.Yes it smells horrible but i apply it to a tissue then wipe it on myself and its not to bad .

incognito IS the proper stuff Im basing that opinion on spending 2 months in the tropical Philippines with zero problems with mozzys
a fishing holiday in Thailand on a mozzy filled lake with zero problems
holidays in Greece ,Spain,France ,Turkey in fact most of Europe with Zero problems
but agreed you do need to re apply it but its not an issue and has always been 100% effective
it is the PROPER STUFF not like that shyte deet that I will never use again

I suffer badly with bites. To the point where sometimes I'd dread going. One of the worst times I think I had about fifty bites from one nights fishing. Gerry recommended Incognito on here a few years back and I thought I'd give it a try. For me anyway it's been a complete game changer. I now rarely get bitten and if I do then it's maybe only an odd one. It's probably been one of the best fishing related things I've ever had recommended to me.

Different things work for different people though Gerry. There is no right or wrong answer. Incognito is ok for me,but I do still get bites. Expedition 100 is better for me. I never, ever get bitten when I use it. Deet is fine as long as you are sensible with it

‘In your opinion' Gerry.
There are folk who live out in these mosquito prevalent regions and are advised to use deet.
Tbh whether it's deet or not, probably it's more a case of those who get bit post application don't reapply when your supposed to or miss exposed areas / don't reapply sufficiently.

Yes and there are folk who live out in these mosquito prevalent regions that wont ever use a Deet based product too take your blinkers off there are plenty of alternatives JUST AS EFFECTIVE some even better than Deet

When you have been on the forum a long time you will see I try and help people save a few quid and I only recommend things I have experienced and comparisons with
and NOT just things I happen to be using
I have been for months in some of the most tropical places on earth using Incognito products and been bite free
and YES of course I have used DEET based repellents in the past ! for many years !
and had my watch strap melted
when I heard about alternative's out performing DEET I took notice as I said its all about choice Im simply saying personally after using DEET products for many many years I will never use them again as there are alternatives I have proved conclusively to myself and lots of friends and relatives
that work easily as good and probably better
but you stick to you pathetic sarcasm and google if it makes you happy
I have also used a couple of Thermocell units for around 7 years but the pads are expensive and the copy ones are crap so I have just bought one of the Lifestyle units that you can use inside your shelter as the fumes are harmless Carpstar40 has had great results using one on his recent French trip

I've been using the lifesystem for a number of years, 5 possibly 6 and they've been great, can't fault them - I change mine once a month in the Summer a pack of five costs £5 - it's a no brainer, I also use the Wolf Mozzi Killer at the same time, and only been bitten once in the past year and that was outside the bivvy...

I think current UK and US military clothing is treated with permethrin, so the British Army MTP jacket and trousers are insect repellant themselves.
Other clothing can be treated, sprayed with permethrin and this will last about 6 weeks.
Might be an option.

Ive been smashed for years by the mozzi's, jungle 55 and the avon stuff had been my go to for a long time.
However, i got the thermacell one you mount on a gas can last year and it literally leaves you bite free.
Turn on and leave for 20min then you will be clear in you swim for about 6 hours or so. I just set a timer on my phone to switch the pads to maintain it.

That sounds great. I am sat here itching from head to toe having been destroyed the last couple of days, especially last night. Avon skin so soft has always worked for me, but for whatever reason had no effect at all this time so thinking of a back up and this sounds ideal

Do the thermacells work on all flying bitey *******s? Not sure what they are, maybe horseflys, but whatever it is that done me last time out felt like it was stabbing me and left me with wounds

Avon skin so soft USED to be ok but they changed it somehow a few years ago and still effective for Scottish mudges but useless for mozzys now

Some years back I lived in a place with thousands of the things and someone advised me to take brewers yeast tablets. I start taking them in around February/ March and stop in November and I no longer get bitten or don't notice it, while everyone around me gets hammered. I don't know the science and haven't read about it. I just know it seems to work for me while when on one pond my poor dog gets eaten alive.
