Even though we can't go yet it will return.
What better time to buy the odd bits we need and at the same time make sure our tackle shops stay in business.
I for one have decided to buy British where possible even if it is more expensive. The Chinese won't get my money 💰 until they financially help the world recover from this virus 🦠

It seems everybody and their dog is in the same mind set.
I've always tried to buy British, if British not possible, American or Norwegian.
Berkley, Mustad, Partridge, ESP etc.....
What I want to see are British made Bivvy and Brollies again
Any company who did manufacture in the UK and produced a simple, reliable product in a no bull S### manner, have it on a plate!

Does this mean you will be selling most of your kit including the imported bait boat you are always promoting?
It would be impossible to kit yourself out with an entirely UK manufactured, including the materials, carp set up. As said in another thread we don't seem to manufacture anything here except for high end niche market goods.

seriously though this countries economy is on its feet anyway before the Chinese virus..... we need to rebuild everything and with Brexit too.....
Know it's hard when the market is flooded with tat from China but if we keep buying it we won't ever get to where we should be...

OK let's take a brief look at some mentioned so far.
Berkley owned by a asset management company with global manufacture.
Mustad bought Partridge and have the largest hook manufactureing factory in the world but its in China.
Esp, not sure but thought their main manufacturing was in Malaysia?
Delkim made in UK? Or assembled from imported parts?
Harrison, made from imported carbon cloth and resins, built in the main from imported components.
Century as above.
Which good old days would they be? We have always been good innovative designers but never great at mass production. The Japanese had to come here and show us how to do that.

Hi Spencer,
You've really confused me with this one, most tackle shops whether in the UK or Europe sell stuff manufactured in China because they get the best margins on it as do most of the tackle companies.
Maybe supporting UK manufacturers products? As opposed to the tackle shops??????
Or have I completely missed the point on this one?
Best
Jon

Don't have a problem with the Japanese or Malaysia
China is the problem!!!
The world is clearly interlinked so nobody is suggesting we don't get anything made in China at all as it's clearly impossible. But to try and avoid where we can
Perhaps we should all just accept it, provide counter arguments and just carry on but that's up to the individuals

You know those takeaways don't actually come from China
Problem is it's the people in charge calling the shots, if the world boycotts Chinese product the suffering of the unemployed workers will be horrific because there's f-all prospects for them outside of factory work.
The regime needs punishing, not the people.

Funny thing is I was trying to tell people on here a long time ago that we should stop buying from the likes of aqua, trakker or any other UK based company that had built its reputation here and moved production to China putting their UK workforce out of work but people were saying they will buy from whoever gives the best price. Its in our nature to buy the cheaper option and in many cases people can't afford the UK made alternative although now there often isn't one. Anyway the venture capitalists that own many big companies will go to the cheapest place of manufacture, making China the richest most powerful nation on earth.

Where does your history start? 2nd largest car manufacturing country in the world up til the mid 50's. Motorcycles right up their. Locomotives, jet engines, ships etc. We've always been a quality manufacturing country of all things. Takes a long term investment approach, which is the real problem in this country-get rich quick.

As said previously, we are/were innovative high end niche market world leaders, rolls Royce Inc jet engines, Bentley, Aston Martin ect UK owned?

They were bigger than the Jap manufacturing companies. Like I said, lack of investment in new designs, technologies and manufacturing equipment did for them as the Japanese were prepared to invest in their manufacturing.
Pity the COVID-19 cure can't be made in 18mm with krill in it. We seem to be able to manufacture that high end niche product successfully

I say we shoot 10,000 a day. That's about the equivalent of about 10 in this country
I certainly hope they go “pop” soon. They have devastated manufacturing in this country and most the world I guess. I've witnessed this in Automotive and chemical industries so far first hand and that's by paying the people peanuts and undercutting everybody else to the point unless you are making something they currently are not it is extremely difficult for a business to compete. Let's not forget shipping it half way round the world too, carbon footprint etc...
The next people you need to stop are the UK Companies Suppliers or middle men shall we call them because they are manufacturing **** all, because all they are doing is buying this mass produced cheap ****, sticking a fancy label on it and selling it onto anglers for a serious and extortionate premium
And Ocelot, I tend to disagree with that, leading the way in technology, they just get hold of it, rapid prototype it and make it, they even make Range Rover and BMW copies and they can't touch them, not to mention one of Lockheads latest fighter planes, where do they get that from then..!
While ever we are accepting it we simply don't have a chance, that's the true reality, ****s

Hang on so you all believe that China did this on purpose and as some form of punishment people should not buy Chinese products? When does the boycott stop? Same length as the boycott of German products because of the Nazis? Same boycott of the Americans over chemical warfare in Vietnam?
Funnily enough China have been sending aid to everywhere but the UK and America by the looks of it. Italy, Spain, Iran, etc. All have Chinese aid...
Maybe the NHS should stop importing all their PPE from China from now too?
Do agree that half of it is sub-standard stuff and very hit and miss on quality.

Maybe if people (carp anglers being no exception) didn't replace the crap they bought every 5 minutes we wouldn't need the man power of a population 1.3 billion bigger than ours to make it all.
I don't remember many people that weren't tonguing the ringer of cyprinus and the other importers a few months back.. people were even ordering stuff before it touched our soil, let alone seen it.

Right about Cypri, same as Aqua and most of the rest, Chinese 🇨🇳
While ever they are exploiting their people, and that's what they are doing, they will never stop under cutting businesses. Couple this with our western lifestyle where everybody wants to own a house and earn 30k a year to suit our flash lifestyles British manufacturing has not got a chance
A company where I used to work employed 8 Chinese workers for the cost of one British worker. Now tell me we have a chance!
Couple this with them buying up most of the worlds natural resources in Africa, Australia, all over the world etc they have virtually monopolised the world. If there is ever a time to back an idiot like Trump this is it because otherwise they will rule the world
And as for support your local tackle shop, that will be Angling Direct will it. The same company who has monopolised the U.K. fishing shop market and bought most of the major competition out and will continue to do so. Wait while they have it all in their pocket and we a paying an absolute premium for Chinese crap!
They will also dictate who is selling tackle in the U.K. soon and who they are dealing with, think about it, if your not dealing with them your probably not at the races, or won't be moving forward
The day commercialism killed carp fishing as we know it, and thats down to all these greedy ****s milking the pastime and it's participants

But it's not just the fishing community who have had enough it seems, my neighbour is into his enduro bikes, he was saying last night “F### the el-cheapo parts option, if it needs any parts from now one it has to be genuine KTM”
What's really peed everyone off (Inc me) is the swine's knew about the Corona virus many weeks before, but instead of putting the welfare of the world population first they put their own greed first - shut nothing down, did not stop travel, arrested the doctor who tried to warn the rest of the world – the Chinese hierarchy showed it's true colours!
I have always tried to avoid buying Chinese, sadly with some products there is no other option.
Barrows, Bed chairs, Bivvys, Brollies being the main ones were there is no option (But there used to be)
Sleeping bags, Reels, Line, Braid, Rods, Hooks, Metal ware, Alarms - all none Chinese options available (Hope it stays that way)
# where raw materials come from to make a finished product has always been the same – nobody can do anything about that one.
E.g. Yorkshire Tea, I've yet to see any tea plantations in the Yorkshire dales: Raw Tea leaves come from various locations were tea actually grows, then it's blended by experts in the UK

Chinese supplied PPE right?
Clearly of the same quality as a lot of their tat:
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-01/coronavirus-chinese-ppe-border-force-intercepted/12085908
But bought out most of the host nations supplies:
https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/revealed-china-stockpiled-2-billion-face-masks-and-25m-medical-items/news-story/5304e5a5080bd4087e4a9be9de210b97
How benevolent. It's impossible to impose a total boycott as the components in our devices are made there even if the product itself isn't.
The Chinese have been steadily influencing and buying up large swathes of nations for some time, this could get real.
But as long as consumerism at the right price is rife nothing will change. Perhaps Partridge can step up to the mark and provide the hooks we want to use and perhaps other brands will encourage that by stocking them. A little less profit orientation goes a long way. Money's nothing if you're not around to use it.
A country that treats its animals so appallingly deserves condemnation for that alone. A trade blockade might hurt them a little but that depends on how much the West depends on Chinese supply, it might turn around and bite us on the arse.

The Aussies are big on Australian made food and product, but are as flooded with Chinese imports as us.
This is also a nation with a high percentage of folk with short memories who claim the rights to vast stores of natural resources and insist that they as ‘Australians‘ have problems in their country caused only by indigenous people and immigrants

Still my question remains...when will this boycott end?
If you say never, then are you happy to buy German products as the Nazi's murdered millions?
Are you happy to buy American products as they nuked Japan & used chemical warfare in Vietman? - it is where the Spanish Flu originated also.
Are you happy to buy British when the empire murdered and pillaged it's way around the globe?
Are you happy to use petrol and diesel in your cars when the countries that own Oil are tyrants and murderers?
What about your Gas from Russia?
If you plan on boycotting China for their madness now then take a look at your other products and where you are happy to buy from. I think you'll find an total boycott of products from any country that has acted worse in history than China has over this would mean you have very little.
I'm not defending China but its a bit flippant to boycott one country over their handling of this virus and ignore the atrocities of others and happily buy their products

I bet not many indigenous Australians got rich from the changing of hands of those minerals though, more those who laid claim to them when westerners arrived

China is an aggressive super power, no friend of the UK or democracy. It's been using it's "belt and road" strategy for years to bring influence on countries and areas across the globe. Buying infrastructure for developing nation's in exchange for debt and in some instances total area's of Chinese influence in the host country. There's many geopolitical reasons why pressure should be applied economically, even before this pandemic. To bring about change. Painful for the importer that makes his money from Chinese cheapness, but the right thing to do long term.

#50 - they've been treating animals like that for centuries, why is it now anyone gives a damn? because of this virus? so it was perfectly fine before this virus went global? It's not exactly been hidden from people, it's well documented the live animal markets so you can't say it's only just come to light.
#51 - someone talking sense, but why is it now the calls for boycott have started? Is it because a majority of the population blame china for this virus, not the responses of the global leaders to it, for the lockdown they are having to endure? Just seems like people are looking for a reason to hate and blame. Chinese products have been here for years and years, no one called for a boycott 3 years ago so why all of a sudden now this virus has come about?

China hid the virus and then allowed it to spread before actually letting the world know, and now look at us. If that's not cause enough alone for some sort of punishment then what is?! As for their treatment of animals, yeah its been out there in plain view, maybe its just been highlighted more now. Its ****ing savage either way

Considering it was reported on UK news in Late December/Early January (and yes too late as people had travelled out of Wuhan by then) was it really hidden to the extent that the situation we are in globally was 'best case scenario'? Plenty of countries, a lot closer to China have it, and have it controlled, EU countries have it controlled, those that took immediate steps to contain it. China did a naughty by not telling everyone earlier, but arrogance of political leaders did the rest, a 'it'll be fine, we wont be affected much' attitude towards it, a majority of the public had the same thoughts.
I mean it's not like China is forcing people to ignore government advice and not social distance is it? It never forced which decisions needed to be made in terms of when to lock down any countries did it?

I never said the global leaders hadn't handled it badly themselves, but the fact remains it started in China and was hushed up, and even the doctor who first discovered it was punished for trying to out it. They allowed people to travel all over knowing they had a deadly virus going about and did nothing to stop it until it was too late. Now the world is in turmoil, people are dying rapidly, economies are on the brink of a huge recession meanwhile China have lost relatively few people in comparison (if their figures are anything like honest) their economy is on the up and countries are swamping them for orders for ppe which half of is sub standard. If that doesn't deserve some sort of sanctions then what does?

Not saying they didnt act naughtily about it all. Sanctions are sanctions, sadly you cant say 'all of these deaths are because of you' to them because no-one acted appropriately. China or any other country. A boycott on Chinese products because of this virus is not a sanction, it is an aim at trying to blame them for something everyone dealt with stupidly. If somehow you managed to get everyone in the UK to not buy a single chinese made product, or any products with ties to china, they probably wouldn't be the losers in the situation, those products will be shipped elsewhere or factories would produce in demand products for the rest of the world.
We can all sit on a forum and say 'I wont buy anything Chinese ever again' but realistically do you think they would notice if you didnt? or if 1 million people didnt? Unless the entire world bans Chinese imports & exports to China (including people) its doesnt really make them take an notice does it.

Back on topic let's all make a massive effort to support our local tackle shops, not Angling direct and it's hunt for a monopoly.
Let's also ask where is that made before we make a choice..... unless the Chinese start to provide free masks and ventilators etc for the whole world it has effected then I won't be supporting their economy one bit.
Makes my blood boil how they have now reopened Wuhan and are now set to profit fro something they blatantly didn't even try and control.

If they would have dealt with it properly then the rest of the world leaders wouldn't have had the opportunity to act stupidly.
The major difference is the world leaders have openly been stupid about the whole situation, the Chinese covered theirs up creating a much bigger issue for everyone else. And now they are the ones benefitting from all the turmoil with their cheap manufacturing of sometimes sub standard ppe. Fancy that.....

You would, they would and so would the UK importers. What does the UK company do when it's products don't sell? Do nothing and go under? It's twofold, they have to get you to buy their products again or someone else will step in. Maybe that could be a UK manufacturer and we wouldn't be in the same ***** again where we can't manufacture anything we need quickly if this type of thing happens again. You've also all the spin offs that a strong manufacturing base brings to a society.

I think what they should do when this ends stop wasting money forget new railways a smart motorways cut back on aid and really help manufacturing low rent low rates and taxes as long it's agreed there end product will be at a affordable price it's been hard for businesses to work here to expensive so they go bust or charge the earth for there product might be able to produce again

there are also manufacturers using, for example, Japanese tooling and design to produce and assemble in China.
They won't necessarily be the cheapest option because there are tariffs on those outfits, they can just supply the demand easier.
Is the main problem not how the vast wealth is used to buy up land, property, debt, etc. Rather than products themselves.
There's also not going to be any money left in our economy to invest in producing anything for a while

Does that make an impact on China? Hardly. you are impacting the business manufacturing over there. You prove my point exactly in what you say...if there is no demand for their product they just change product they manufacture, same as the business will change manufacturer? Or do you think the Chinese companies would sit and do nothing and go under but others wont?
I'm not defending China, I've quite clearly said that in my posts, I just think people need to look deeper than "the virus came from China so lets boycott all Chinese products" and actually realise why they weren't boycotting China before if all this stuff was happening they are so against. I've never heard anyone say about boycotting China until the last week or so, the sole reason being this virus outbreak. If your reason to boycott is SOLELY due to this virus and the way they handled it it just seems ridiculous.
Maybe i'm just a little annoyed that the people I see saying it on my faceache are the same people who wanted foreigners out but now applaud them for keeping the country running & the same people that clap the NHS but vote for a party that cheered when they blocked them getting pay rises. Fickle people with little integrity.
I suppose it boils down to the products in question though...I.E. there is a golf swing aid, it is a bit of plastic pretty much, nothing too special. £25 from the company who 'invented' it. £4 from China. Now would you pay an extra £11 for a mere bit of plastic just to support the company, which are clearly overcharging for it and feed their greed??
In any case, like I said, the boycott needs to be global, and it needs to happen with import and export bans put in place. Driving down demand, etc. takes years to hit the manufacturers, they see it coming and diversify well before any substantial losses occur at their end.
I am not sure how AD have managed to keep monopolising the industry but I don't think it'll last long. They went from small and brilliant to owning everything and having poor service a lot of the time and plenty don't bother with them anymore.

Spot on, I got a letter from the PM, £5 million spent sending a letter out to tell us to stay inside. Personally I think that money could have been better spent on supporting the vulnerable and key workers in the country instead of a letter which goes through many hands and risks infecting a lot of people only to end up in the recycling bin 2 minutes after opening it.

Do you understand how Chinese companies and the ruling communist party work? All companies have card carrying party members on the boards. The aim of the company is to strengthen the Chinese state and fund it's ambition's. You could say the bivvy you bought pays for the detention and reeducation of millions of Uighars. Or pays for the 7 aircraft carriers they're building. Or the bullets used to break up democracy rallies in Hong Kong.
You impact Chinese business you effect the ruling Communist party
So I'm not sure what your point is. Let alone proving it.

A better idea. We stick a 25%+ import fee on any business buying goods from China, takes the control away from the Chinese and gives our manufacturing businesses a chance to compete, after all, the fore mentioned are doing nothing for our economy, jobs etc. Other than importing cheap crap to line their pockets and supporting Chinese manufacturing. Make it 50%

I'm quite sure what yours is?
I'm not saying Chinese products shouldn't be boycotted, I'm just questioning peoples intentions and ideology around a boycott. The rationale seems to be because of a virus, not the reasons you have stated.
I'll stand by what I'm saying, the quickest way to have any effect is a global united bans on Chinese products AND exports to China, as boycotting items reduces demand too slowly to have any significant effect. A reduced demand for a tackle company, translates back to a Chinese manufacturer after maybe a 12 months, possibly longer before the tackle firm cottons on they are being boycotted because of the Chinese manufacturer and it actually starts costing them their business. If it isn't everyone then they don't see significant enough loses to start looking elsewhere for manufacturers, the chances are it wont be Britain when they do, it'll be another Asian country that where a virus didn't originate from. The orders start drying up from the firm to the Chinese manufacturer and they see this by lower and lower order numbers all the time, so they start looking at other products to manufacture to fill the loss of earnings, when the orders completely dry up and the contract is dropped they are already diversified for another product. Do you not think that the Chinese have a brain or business acumen to see the need to diversify and not loose money, just the same as you expect a British retailer to do? Why would they act any different to a British business owner?

Good luck selling them. I bet most tent raw materials don't exceed £50. Aluminium poles and fabric. £30 labour in a sweat shop compared with say £200+ here?. Major make up and rip off and they have just upped and upped the profit margins to a ridiculous levels such as a £600 tent that is probably useless after a couple of seasons!!!, yet, right
The Aqua / Cypri comparison is a prime example, half the price and that's from the same factory shipped around the world. Can't knock the Chinks for that can you, cutting out the middle man
So all these fishing companies who don't manufacture in the U.K. are nothing more than a badge importing mass produced cheap crap and selling it off for a premium ripping anglers off. They are a service provider, end of, pick up the phone, get me 3000 of these....
So when they are doing all this self promotion stuff what they should do is look at themselves these greedy ****s and realise they are not doing anything for the economy over here or the people buying their crap, I.e providing jobs. They are nothing more than sales and promotion teams. That's the reality. What they should do to be politically correct with their products is all wear red Chinese jumpers when promoting their gear. Rip off merchants of the highest level

For someone who's worked in the electronics design industry for nearly 30 years uk contract manufacturers are just not competitive when it comes to volume manufacture.
Apple make all their products at Foxconn who are one of the biggest in the world if you look on wiki in 2012 it was said they made 40% of all consumer electronics in the world - so what company wouldn't want to take advantage of that ?
Again for raw materials / textiles it will always be China
When we come out this what will be left is a deep global recession probably lasting into mid 2021 companies will continue to look to China to help them resurrect their businesses to build us their cash resources (to re employ etc) & survive.
Business is business.
What are we all going to do when our government signs the trade deal with China - boycott them ?
We have to get away from all the conspiracy theories & looking to blame someone and work as one to build a better world

LApple make all their products at Foxconn who are one of the biggest in the world
Or better still google, Foxconn factory riot, thats interesting reading, that's the reality and what we are up against
If people can remember when Trump got in one of the first things he was trying to do was get Foxconn to build a plant in the US
Edit - had a google
The Foxconn plant in southeastern Wisconsin is a project to ostensibly build a $10 billion flat screen TV and LCD panel manufacturing plant in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin that was originally slated to employ 13,000 people. The state of Wisconsin had made an agreement with Foxconn whereby the company would receive subsidies ranging from $3 billion to $4.8 billion (paid in increments if Foxconn met certain targets), which would have been by far the largest subsidy ever given to a foreign firm in U.S. history. The factory was set to start production by the end of 2020 but as of December 2019 construction had yet to begin.
A start but nothing compared to the near 80,000 people who work at the Chinese plant!
Anybody who is interested even further have a google: Government-owned companies of China, thats the reality

China also own shares in Thames Water. Are you all going to stop your water supplies and dig a bore hole?
If you have a deep enough search - somehow it likes to get hidden away - the businesses both private and public that have Chinese investment is quite extensive. I believe China bought a load of government premium bonds at one point too.
What I'm seeing is that China have not privatised anything much and have kept it all government owned and are mega rich for it. Is there just sheer jealousy from those that support privatisation? Maybe if we didn't do it here we would be richer, as a government and as a country? Problem is China is a communist regime so they do naughty things. I guess the argument being used is “don't line the Chinese governments pocket to pay for their public services/naughtiness/lifestyle, instead line the pockets of private business owners instead, not sure who they are or if they are good people though”
It all smacks of jealousy - China are a financial powerhouse in the world. A leading global influence. It's not new. In my year 11 geography classes over a decade ago we learnt of the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) economic group that were on course to overtake everyone as the 4 leading economic And industrial powers in the world. Basically the previous powers (USA & European countries) outsourced everything to those place and lined their pockets and made them richer than everyone else (exclude Russia from that) by exploiting the people If those emergent countries for their own greed. Britain had an empire, as did other countries. China are building one. Just because you think it's not right to have one doesn't stop them. I doubt anyone in the commonwealth was happy to be exploited and enslaved by the British Empire and their resources stolen (not even bought like China are doing).

There's the reason Uncle Trump gave Boris a shellacking for allowing Huawia into our 5G network. We're wedded atm to cheap Chinese goods and investment. Boris bottled it cause he didn't want to jeopardise this arrangement.

Why are you so keen to protect this terrible domination approach? Ok so we are all victims of this terrible crooked country and have allowed the situation. Still doesn't make it right
We aren't jealous just annoyed that they don't care about anyone else but themselves in this world

Not protecting...just exploring people's ideas and reasonings. Plenty of people have shown the numerous deeper reasons than a virus for a boycott. Why is everyone getting their knickers in a twist when a statement against their opinion is put forward to make them think? This ‘terrible domination approach' was exactly what the British empire did but with violence not money not so long ago don't forget.
I've not once said it makes it right. But placing blame solely on that country is misguided isn't it? If we as a world never succumbed to cheap goods they wouldn't be where they are would they? Is it their fault for taking a business opportunity when they see one to make some money? Isn't that what any business does? Or should no businesses be allowed to see a gap and fill it?

Look beyond your toes, you might enlighten yourself. They are monopolising everything to the point that they will control most things. As a British citizen who is also looking at the future for my kids that seriously concerns me, how about you?
They bought out a company I used to work for, they used to invest 15billion into cutting edge chemistry, they did not buy it for the business they bought if for the chemistry and R&D which eventually end up in... China
Another business I worked for lost out major due to the labour costs, couldn't compete in this product market so let it go, to the Chinks
Hey ho, where I am now might be part of a buyout, guess what, the Chinks are interested...
You stick to your geography lessons. I will look at facts
So when there is **** all left over here, no jobs and we are flat on our arses, go to China eh?

Are you an importer by any chance?
OK so we've worked out that if we make our own stuff some part of the chain may come from China but if individuals want to boycott Chinese made stuff as much as possible then surely it's their choice, whether it'll hurt China is another thing but at least they have the satisfaction.

I fully intend to do exactly what you describe mate.
A poor example coming up... Yesterday was looking for a bushcraft, micro inflatable pillow, for my old one was leaking, and Chinese made...
Found a few I liked, but made in China, did, about five mins worth of research, bought what I wanted, made in Sweden.., and only three pounds more expensive..
Similarly, the above outlook is going to be taken on board by many,I bet...not just me....
Every time I look at that Aqua Heritage armo I own,it looks good, but look again....its so poorly made, rubbish compared to my original which I had for a long time...
I would pay good money for a decent made British bivvy,or shelter....

Nope just don't live a blinkered life. Not telling people not to boycott just asking questions about what they aim to achieve and why. Is that not allowed? Like I said in an earlier post for me, a majority of the people I've seen have no real reasons and are the same people that before Christmas were screaming “brexit, get the foreigners out” but now need something to shout about as those foreigners are propping up the NHS, shops, public transport, etc.
Why is it harmful to question people and their motives? It's surely more dangerous not to.

Sometimes it takes something major to happen to stir people into action. China has been chipping away at global domination for years but as it's been a steady thing and people are busy with their own lives so we let it ride.
This has focused the mind for sure.
Sorry but you can say what you like it isn't going to influence me or anyone else that agrees!!!!!

Not trying to influence anybody or stop them doing what they want to do, sorry you feel that way about a few valid points about the whole thing. valid points that would Make people that are potentially jumping on the bandwagon actually think About it rather than be sheep should not be ignored? Has this not led to more than ‘a virus started there' as the sole reason for a boycott, anyone with no clue that reads this thread will have a comprehensive understanding of the situation and be able to make an informed decision if they are so inclined.
It's sad that you feel that points that show the whole picture are an attack on your belief. If you feel that way then it is you that is attacking your own beliefs based on points someone else has raised in conversation. Ive not once said China hasn't been doing anything that anyone has bought up, merely pointed out it is one of a long line of countries that have tried global domination in one way or another. Like you said instead of using violence like the rest of the world tried, they have used money and it has been very successful for them. Again just for your benefit, that statement is NOT saying well done to them, it's just saying it how it is. Whilst the rest of the world has focussed on bombings and war the Chinese have taken a business opportunity and made a shed load of cash and bought up whatever they wanted in every country and made the world almost dependent on them. It's Much more clever than turning up with guns and bombs and slaughtering everyone.

The Americans called the Japanese "Nips" in WW2 due to Japan also is called Nippon-koku in Japanese. The term used in Vietnam was "Gook" to describe the Vietnamese. Both are not politically correct nowadays (used in context here as explanation only)

Take your point about trade. But they have done an awful ot of killing, invading and torturing in the 80 years or so they have existed in their communist form. There used to be a peaceful Buddhist country called Tibet, led by the Dalai Lhama. China invaded in the late 50,s. Their human rights record there is appalling, genocide is not too strong a word. Lots of educational, technical and military support given to the loonies in North Korea. Religious, political and social repression by violent means is the norm. This is a totalitarian communist dictatorship where freedom is denied to most people. Western governments and businesses have been prostituting themselves for the enormous profits to be made since tricky Dicky Nixon went over in the sixties. You know, the one who was impeached. Careful with China.

It would be nice if we could all buy 'Made in Britain', and even the materials were made in Britain, not sourced elsewhere.
While Century do make in the UK, they do get some of the carbon cloths from abroad, but NOT from China. I had a long email conversation with Simon Chilcott. China is embargoed from some technologies and materials, including some carbons. As a result some goods are not as high a standard as they could be.
China as a country is a human rights and environmental nightmare. How many people were 'relocated' when the valley was damned to provide hydroelectric power?
Carbon emissions from coal fired power stations, you could go on.
China has been supporting various regimes in the Middle East and worldwide to provide influence, and the same with various economies in goodness knows how many countries.

Not stalking at all, it just seem a bit odd that you moan about carp tax and silly price when tax and vat are the same on most non essential products. Those reel handle are a quality product made in the UK in small volume so I would expect the price to be relatively high. No different to UK rod manufactures really and they are using imported materials, if we are going to support UK manufacturing we all need to accept that the prices will bo higher than many imports.

Yeah agree but GB still need to compete a bit. There are some people that can't afford £75 for a handle but might stretch to £15 cheapo.....
Surely if the margins where a little finer they would sell more!!!

We're a small country with a small / ever shrinking manufacturing capability so whilst its nice to look at things through rose tinted spectacles whilst waving that Union Jack it's not going to happen.
You only have to look at the UKs struggles with this pandemic - shortage of gowns, reagents, ventilators, critical care beds & PPE.
Having to charter a plane to China to pick up 2.5m pcs of PPE this week.
Other European countries have done much better than us, I think we're better off in Europe as it's clear we can't stand up by ourselves
We need Europe & the world needs China .
Yep mine, your hearts may say one thing but we have to think with our heads.

I remember we did alright before belonging to Europe we had brexit the people don't want to belong to Europe and the reason that we have struggled to get ppe is because all the world wants it be better to find out how this started and punish those responsibility not keep running down the people that are doing there best to keep us alive I wouldn't want there job and the massive responsibility it holds

I think you're totally wrong –
PPE, I can walk for 15 minutes from leaving my front door to where two factories once stood, where they used to make PPE for most of Europe and the Military, a company called Vernon Carus
It‘s a while ago now, but the ratio was something like – cost to make one item here/for the same production cost in China = 150 of the same item!
Which you can expect when you factor in-
~ No Pensions to Pay
~ No Holiday Pay to pay
~ Zero working rights
~No Sick Pay (If your ill get off site and go back to your Paddy field!)
~ Cheap Energy Bills (as they don't give a toss about C02 emissions)
~ Cheap raw materials (Don't give a toss about destroying the environment getting it)
The list is endless; China is on a Parr with a modern version of the Victorian Sweat Shops that sparked the birth of Trade Unions in the civilised world, but with China it seems a case of “Out of sight out of mind” attitude prevails, and the only priority is “Profit, Profit, and more Profit!”

Make you right 100% Keith 👍👍
It's the ‘well that's how it is attitude' that we need to turn around into a ‘that's not right attitude'
Just accepting things for what they are means nothing ever changes.

Also look at the over management within the NHS, all the service providers Inc ppe contracted to private company's milking it and when they can't meet the demand other suppliers have to go through them so they still get their markup. Senior managers that don't know how to run a hospital.

There are not many companies in the U.K. that can compete with that, and that's the sad reality
We could make premium products in the U.K. like we used to do but what will happen, same as before, they will copy them and under cut the manufacturers. Some people need to open their eyes because all these businesses flogging over priced Chinese crap are doing nothing for the economy in this country or the people who buy their products by creating jobs. They are simply buying and selling mass produced cheap crap, minimum outlet maximum profit and supporting the Chinese economy by doing so 🇨🇳
Remember, a lot of them are nothing more than Sales Outfits waving a fancy badge for the products they are flogging. They are doing nothing for the U.K. other than providing a product to line their pockets.
I have nothing but respect for any U.K. manufacturing business doing the right things and trying to compete against this farce
There a few ways to stop it, massive imports taxes etc etc

To be fair the people importing cheap rebranded tat are generating jobs and tax revenue with transportation, marketing and sales. We just miss out on the manufacturing
If we were to move back to uk manufacturing, to keep to realistic pricing, sales would be better made directly to the consumer with minimal marketing.

How many of the GB only advocates have also advocated Bank Tackle on here? Surely one of the worst offenders for shipping dirt cheap stuff over from China at a huge mark up?
I'm well aware that Korda etc also buy their terminal tackle from factories in China, but at least there is a bit of design and R&D done in this country. Still not great.
But companies like Bank just straight rip off that design and R&D and undercut the prices selling direct, therefore also cutting out the tackle shops.

I think there is a balance to be had. Dirt cheap stuff as you say fine, import it from China or wherever.
Anything that requires a bit more skill e.g. rods, reels, alarms, bankware, hooks etc try to buy British if you think there's merit in doing so.
Is it possible to buy a British made carp reel? I guess not due to the assembly being so labour intensive.

And sadly that is what the poor people and countries of the world have to do. The empire is long gone.

I can't see the logic here?
To have a completely British made reel you would need the tooling to make hundreds, if not thousands of individual components. You would also need the availability of a wide range of British made materials produce these components. The cost of assembly would be minor compared to this.
Making a British made swivel, for example, is much more plausible. Machinery for minimal components and a single material and coating treatment.
The reality is that they would probably cost 10x as much and so the Britain First crew would laugh and still buy from Bank.

We need to get away with thinking all China are capable of making is cheap stuff and blatant copying.
Look at the new huawei p30 pro great camera which is capable of taking fantastic pictures.
There are many more products.
For example so many US / European semiconductor (the IC that go in all electronic products) companies are reliant on China it's an important maket, which in hand fuels our economy's growth.
For decades yes the west funded the east they flooded the market with cheap copies & still do but they have moved on to become great innovators also did anyone ever watch Reggie in China (you can watch it on BBC iplayer) it's a real eye opener when he visited Shenzhen.
Eventually AI / machine learning - aka the rise of the machines will take many many more jobs even from the low cost countries - were a species in danger of becoming redundant - so who will we blame then ?
So I'll keep supporting our tackle shops by using them and not chasing down the price as sadly many do.

Unfortunatly convenience is now one of the biggest factors when people are choosing a product along with price, I very much doubt any more than 1% of the UK population look at where an item is made and whether it has being made by workers in safe/well paid and secure positions.
I look at China as a legal sweat shop, have a good google for working conditions/rights etc and you will be shocked, it is far worse than I imagined and keep in mind China are renowned for censoring what they allow to go online.
The problam we would face IMO going with UK only products is the fact that we have so few factories left. I was watching a cool documentary on YouTube yesterday about a brand of scissors which are hand made in the UK and cost around £100 a pair, a quick look on Amazon and 'Replicas' are going for around a fiver!!!
Video Here Have a watch and listen to how much pride Cliff has for his work (around 6 minutes)

There are great number of UK workers who are not in safe, well paid and secure positions. A lot of people have to buy the cheapest products and do not have the luxury of choice even with essentials.

British steel, been crippled by Chinese steel imports, HS2, using Chinese steel, when will we ever learn, first we don't need HS2, can work from home etc, plus we love kicking ourselves in the nuts

I think I am correct in saying this. A number of years ago the countries of the EU, being concerned with poor quality subsidised low cost Chinese steel damaging their own industries got together to apply sanctions. One country applied their veto and no action was possible. No prizes for guessing who.
In reply to Post #169
Sorry but that's not correct. China's steel output 40 years ago was the same size as the UK.
Today they produce half the worlds steel. This has been driven by their development which had turned once rice fields into city's full of skyscrapers .Their population is 1.3 billion to our 64 million. The rest of the world for the last decade has been also supplying China as they did not have enough material. Though the price has now fallen due their slowing demand putting many companies out of business though our government wanted a low price to offset our high labour costs.

Yep, your bang on
You only need to compare raw material costs or any product cost - it's a no brainer why companies use materials or have products made in China = massive profit margin.
It really is that simple.
But then you have to think "Why is China making stuff so phenomenally cheap compared to everywhere else?" What's the end game, what's the motive, why would you use your population as nothing more than glorified slaves?

To be honest the whole of our economy is based on whats cheapest.
I run a building firm and when tendering from architects all the client is focused on is who is cheapest. Its endemic in everything we do - look at the rise of lidl - whoever is cheapest gets the business.
Not 100% I agree but 99% for sure.
Strange as everyone in this country is in more debt than they have ever been in yet everything is cheap!

Name me one Communist country that didn't treat it's populace as an expendable commodity?

Covid will result in deglobalisation to some extent for sure.
We know we are far too reliant on Asia. Macron has already been bold enough to say this.
This may apply to pharmaceuticals etc but carp gear? That will come down to whether we want British vs cheaper goods.

It does not have to be just British-
My Reels are Swedish, French and British made.
Rods are 100% British made.
Line - American, hook link too.
My Alarms are British, and I also have a set of old JRC DSi's as well - can't remember now think they was Czech made.
Hook's - I have Norwegian, British and American (I bought old stock pre-Mustad's move to China) glad I did the price of old Partridge hooks has gone through the roof past few weeks!
Bivvy or Brolly - your stuffed it's Chinese or none, same with bedchairs and chairs.

Because the models sold for carp fishing must be made in asia?
I know my torque spinning reel was USA made, but it was nearly 500 quid

Also have a brand new out of the box Mitchell 301a that was found in a loft, and some British Centre Pins too.

Cuba under Castro? The people were poor, but that was largely down to the American sanctions. Not ‘slaves' though, and everyone had access to good state run health care and education. At one stage I believe they were independently assessed as having 100% literacy, not something many capitalist set ups can claim.

£7.99 for something made in China or £14.99 made in Britain?. Fortunately I'm in a position where i'm able to buy British made where I can. Unfortunately there's many many folk due to unemployment etc etc that wouldn't be able to buy British made goods and that to me is a travesty.
