I do this with a heli rig, or an adapted version of it.

My current water you have to fish a lead drop off, so I use a Heli-safe, but this works with any heli setup so long as you use some kind of clip to remove the lead.

You just mount your PVA stick on a short length of material between your lead and your heli-safe or quick change clip. I use a short 4-6" section of 45lb lead-free leader, with a loop one end to attach the lead to, and a big ring spliced on the other end I can attach to the Helisafe - so its like an extension lead for your lead. You can then thread a PVA mesh stick onto the extension as you would thread one onto your rig, so that it rests on top of your lead. I make my PVA sticks as long as I make the extension. I also put a few PVA nuggets in the end of the stick, nearest the heli-safe/quick change clip, and I poke the hook point into one of the PVA nuggets in the top of the PVA stick. Works for all rigs and casts well too and no chance of tangles either. Once the PVA mesh melts the nugget lifts the rig away from the PVA stick, and once the nugget melts the rig drops down just away from the free offerings in the PVA stick.

Adam Penning does this too - I think he calls it a depth charge or something.

Perfect. Dead easy solution.

The method I posted in #2 will also do it, and it also saves having to thread your hook length through the bag. The only limiting factor is its supple braid only.

Make your stick, push the needle into it and make it come out about 1.5 - 2inch before the bottom of the stick, pull the hook link through but push your hook into the bottom of the stick or side of it, the weight will be outside of the stick and the rest inside of the stick if that makes sense?

Or similar if using soft braid, straight through the bag but hook into the bag on the outside about 2 inches up before pulling the hooklink through the stick

Not seen these. My mate came up with a solution 15 years ago which was basically the same as the PB products item - a used wooden chopstick with a nick cut in the side near the blunt end to loop the line in. Worked perfectly and cost nothing ...

Thanks for this. Never seen one of those before but what a simple and ingenious bit of kit. Ordered one already.

Just pull the stick down to your popup weight and then fold the hooklength back and nick the hook into the stick. Simples.

You can use a supple braid and then there is a way to form a loop in the braid that then goes around the top knot of the stick. The whole hook length is on the outside of the stick...
First hook the hook into the stick at the side near the bottom knot, then pass the loop in the braid over the top knot and pull it down tight. You can cast this as hard as you like.
You do get a small residue of the pva knot but it's well away from the hook and creates no problem.
It's a great method, you can have several sticks ready made and just attach them as needed.

I would like to use PVA sticks with popups but I am concerned that I will need to leave the hook and shot loose outside the PVA stick. Normally with wafters and bottom baits I would pull the hook into the stick. Has anybody used popups with sticks and found an easy way around it or does it not matter?
