Yeah they're great for keeping the bread on. Quick dip on the water and you can fling it a fair way.
You do need to get your bread the right way round though so the hook sits above the water. I use a big size 4 so it's a lot trickier but even sitting under the bread it's still fine. Put it in wrongly though and you'll have the hook at a funny angle on the side or something.

I have 3 of these but have yet to find a reason to use them over bread on a hook.
I guess you can cast them further?
