It's a rig that will get you bites from areas you couldn't otherwise get a bite from. Rubbish for anything else. But for that reason alone it's invaluable imo.

Interesting you say that. I actually really rate choddys even over really clean areas as long is I'm spread baiting. I really rate it as a single hookbait approach also. I genuinely think it's a hard presentation for carp to deal with and one I have loads of confidence in I agree it is sometimes a bit too blatant but it's one hell of a good hooker.

I personally fish it with Korda's Heli leadcore system with a quick change chod section from Choice Rigs whenever I can. However your lake may have rules regarding leadcore or leaders etc. If I had to use a naked system I would use a heavy flurocarbon leader/mainline instead.

I would have to agree with Yonny, the chod rig is purposely used to fish over chod. The weight is never in contact with the fish until the rig slides and hits the upper bead or the weight at the bottom. Hence why I would use a fixed or bolt lead setup on a clear spot

I know helicopter rigs are gaining popularity though, however these are used for their anti-tangle features when fishing long.

If I tell you i have been using chods only for all my fishing for the last 3 years..on every type of bottom..yes, also clean hard gravel.
I dont know how many carp I had the last 3 years..😅
Rubbish....I dont think so.
its got allot of advantage's....never tangle's, always resets, can be presented with a very light lead, not fixed, so nothing to shake the hook out....
I do use it with corkballs and screws..

Do you vary the length of the chod depending on the type of bottom you're fishing over , and if so what's the shortest and longest you use ?

I use chods but nearly always over weed and around 3" from swivel to the eye of the hook.

The point is, the weight of the leadcore/leader sets the hook, not the lead initially.

So what sets it when used naked if that's the case?

You have to balance the pop-up, I think the putty is weight enough to keep the hook in the mouth( the stiff curve also makes it hard to ejecting the hook).
I prefer leadcore personally, about 6 feet long...1 bead at the top, the other above the buffer/sillicone section thats separate's the lead from the hook. So fully sliding over the leadcore. 99% I fish it very low..using Nash chodlink 20lb and krimps, 2 inches max...

I've never used a naked chod, as it's not something i'd have a great deal of confidence in being the most effective pick up > hooked fish rig tbf.

I personally don't think you need a lead to "set" the hook.

Plenty of fish are caught on running rigs which is my preferred method for most of my fishing.

I don't think it is the lead or leader that sets the hook, especially as you pointed out, with running leads.
Paternoster and running leads we tend to strike, and pull the hook in.
With any lead set-up the hook is pulled in and set as we tighten the line to the hook, and further during the fight.

Exactly ,so there must be more to it than the leader setting the hook? Can't stand chods Tbh so of no importance to me either way . If it's that or nothing then Tbh I'd fish another spot rather than use a chod
Are you sure?
