OK I've treated myself to a Bulin T4 stove and bought a small screw on butane canister.
My question is this, is it safe to unscrew this canister at the end of a session and just pop it in my carryall bag or do I need a safety container of some sort to put it in?

Yep no problem at all, I put mine inside my wooly hat just to stop it rattling around against the kettle and pot.

I would also advise to keep the plastic cap that you remove from the canister and when you unscrew the canister to replace it back on the canister when it is not in use.
I learnt from experience about 3 years ago how dangerous it is not to fit the cap on after use.
I was packing my tackle away in my car and I kept noticing the smell of butane, I just presumed it was coming from unburnt gas in the pipeline of my stove. The smell was getting stronger with every visit to the car though.
I then knew there was something amiss, when I checked my cooking bag, I found that I had packed it into a tight space and the 450 canisters valve was pushing up against something in the bag, probably a fork and releasing the gas. If I had the plastic cap on, it would have been safe.
If I had been a smoker and had a fag in my mouth and the gas air mixture had been right, I would have probably had my car go up in a fireball.
The 450 canisters are a bit safer but the smaller 220's are even worse for this to easily happen.

I just unscrew mine and put it back in the rucksack with my spare clothing.
I can understand the theory of putting the plastic cap back on, but because mine is wrapped in with my clothes don't bother myself. If you keep it in with pointed items or other cooking stuff, then yes.
