Do people really buy an item because angler X is using it? I would actively not buy a brand if a sponsored angler using it irritates me and have done so plenty of times in the past, the worst in angling i have come across have normally been a sponsored one - desperate ****ers.

Most of the time, they don't even use the things they show in their fishing, so no, i only buy things i think that will cover my needs

As above, I've been behind the counter on a "show day" then proceeded to sell terminal tackle of other brands to these muggy "ambassadors" once they had finished promoting items they don't even use themselves.
It's all a con.
The quicker people realise this, the more money they'll keep in their pockets.

I think the youngsters that are easily swayed and believe what they see on social media etc .

There's loads on my place. They only bug you if you let them. Otherwise, they're mostly decent blokes under a bit of pressure to catch.
I just leave them to it and catch fish on blunt hooks and last weeks hookbait 👌, you should try it 🙂

Too be fair I bought the MK1 ESP Terry Hearns 23 years ago after seeing Tel advertising them 😂

Well watch a video by a tackle brand and video by one of the bait companies/Cypography. No Delks and using RX+ etc. I always noticed that.

For me, primarily it comes down to my requirements. From there I look at reviews and take recommendations from others… as such my gear is a complete mish-mash of brands
Its the way of the world at the moment isn't it?
Seems to be the same in all avenues of how the public can be parted from their money - influencers influencing where you holiday, eat, enjoy music, which bike you ride, hook you use, which channel you watch and so on.
Feels for a few years now that people are getting sick of it.
Someone must be buying from this method though as they keep on influencing!

Most of my gear is so old that no self respecting influencer or modern sponsored angler would be seen dead with it🤣🤣

Alarms - Heavily modified Nash Neville Stainless steel Alarm circa 1990’s - Discontinued
Waterproofs - Aqua Union Jack Himalaya or Berghaus 3 layer extrem - both discontinued
Boat - Original dark green Bic 252. Discontinued
Barrow - Carporter MK1 - Discontinued
Landing net - UltraCult - Anyone remember them. Bought around 1996. Company no longer exists.

Older gear especially the Aquas were built different. A mate of mine has a few and the old dome tent/bivvy of his is still going strong. He obviously doesnt use it much but what a bit of kit. My old Armo mk2 made in Stapeley lasted years till it got moused at the back of the garage one winter 😢 I was gutted. Got it cheaper becuse they stitched the wrong badge on it in the shop haha.
My old Solar stainless sticks I also bought from Stapeley 20+ years ago I still use.

The rate some of these “Sponsored anglers” jump from one company to another you would be changing gear every five minutes. It puts me off to be honest the over promoting of products. I stick to 2/3 manufactures for terminal tackle. I don’t buy hooks as I found i pattern I love and bought a shed load before they were discontinued and the next “Revamped” one came out. I don’t generally buy anything big and if I do I go 2nd hand. Loads of gear out there for decent prices where people are giving up.

Yes they do just look at all the people using basia coffee grinders which are far inferior to shimmano as a fishing reel quality and longevity wise .All from the korda videos it was just the same with infinity fire pokers
I used to work on a lake in France and people used to change their t-shirts or hoody to different sponsors for several photos

I think Jim Shelly and Terry Edmunds are worse tbh. Terry especially.
He's a genuine specialist whose recommendation should be so meaningful, but Harrison, shimano, korda and fox can't all make the best casting rods.

Terry Edmunds is a decent guy.
If you meet him for a lesson he makes pretty much zero reference to the rods you bring or the ones he is using at the time. It’s all about the line diameter and the technique. No selling or even mention of who his sponsors are, he just wants to get you casting further.

Ive had a couple of lessons with him, he's superb, and I agree that he is pretty independent during tuitions.
I'm thinking more about the online presence, you tube, podcasts , social media etc.

There is a massive upside to sponsored anglers - they don’t fish my publicity ban waters and you’d be amazed what a difference it has made, almost back to pre social media feel when you show photos on your phone to mates in pubs, not just fish for likes.
There are a few sponsored anglers I really dislike, mainly for their support of the gambling / raffle sites - trying to influence people not on the art and skill of fishing but on a dice roll for a new set of £2k reels.
Many sponsored angers fall into the. Couldn’t give a toss category they occasionally appear on a feed somewhere and I just ignore them.
The ones I do like, which is a very small minority are the ones that get the balance right between selling and informative content - a value exchange in marketing talk. You show me a rig, why you used it and what problem did it overcome and I will happily listen to the hook and bead manufacturer plugs, I’m a grown up and can decide for my myself what to use and what the choice is. I can easily watch Scott Lloyd which surprised me, as I find him engaging and a thinker, Mark holmes I like - maybe not his style but I like his hypothesis and thinking around some challenges.

First thing he did was bend the butt of my Torrix 12 6 TE's over his knee to show me how inadequate they were, then, in reference to my mates 13 Kaizen Greens said 'they are ok' .
Later when asking for recommendations he went on about the Fox rods, weird we thought........3 weeks later it was announced he'd joined Fox 😂😂
Go figure.
