Looking at getting my first camera after doing a couple pics for a mate on his last night and the pictures were just something else compared to a phone. So can anyone recommend me a camera I can get for relatively cheap and user friendly. Thanks

I think he has a canon a640 a really old one. Budget ideally under 150, I have been looking at a canon eos 1000d but unsure if they are any good.

It's not so much the camera but the glass.

But the 1000D is the bottom of the range.

Still, a good entry level camera but is the budget EOS with a kit lense. Probably better spending less on this as a starter and if you find it limiting in time you can sell on and upgrade. Plus if you've bought any decent additional lenses they will fit more expensive EOS's

Yeah found one with bag, lens and charger for £98 on eBay which I thought was my best option. Not bothered if it's not the very best just want an upgrade from my phone especially for night shots.

Cannon G series is brilliant, they have flip round screens

I'll be selling my cannon G12 soon.

Sorry to hijack the thread. But it is relevant. Anyone had any experience of the Canon M50 compact DSLR. Love the small size more than anything. But as a Camera to take fishing is it any good? Or are there any other compact DSLR out there I should be looking at.

The M50 is not a DSLR - it's mirrorless. It would make an awesome fishing camera. DSLR quality in smaller package. I had the M6 which is v similar.
Canon do an EF-M 32mm f/1.4 lens that pairs well with the M50 and is as sharp as lenses 10 times the price. A very, very good lens.

Mate you will not beat this for an all-round compact camera, and I shoot with a 6k Sony a1. I've owned this and it is a remarkable camera that offers pro glass on a compact. Dont be concerned with it only being 8MP, it only needs 2MP for billboards.

Isn't a 32mm far too wide for fish pictures?
It would make a tiny fish look massive

The M50 is crop sensor so it's just under 50mm shots which is perfect for catch pics.

Off the back of some advice from a friend I'm thinking of upgrading to a Sony a7iii with a Sony FE 1.4 50mm GM lens

But I keep telling myself I shouldn't as it's overkill haha the m50 is far far far good enough

Hi mate.

I am a photographer and I love Sony for outside shoots, (I shoot fashion).

I have the Sony A7riii (same model as the one you're looking at but good for stills and video).

I'm posting as do be aware that the screen doesn't flip - which for self takes etc is important.

You're right though, its all abut the glass and that 50 is nice lens.

Don't be worried about the rear screen not fully articulating on the A7 series. As the latest creative app from Sony tethers reliably and has zero lag to your mobile phone, I normally attach my phone to the hot shoe to see what the camera sees. And with the latest firmware you now have a built-in intervalometer for self-takes.

I had no idea about this, but I have a team sorting the cameras for shoots. This is really interesting. Although on the bank, personally, I'd rather not mess about with a hotshoe and phone, just another thing to go wrong.

What about a really good compact camera with a built in flash, flip screen and a really good lens..it would be much easier to carry around.Any ideas what I could look at?

There is no compact which is an upgrade over your 5D MK3. But if you're genuinely interested in a compact check the Pro 1 as suggested in post 12, or, the G1X MK2 or MK3 are a bit special. I had the MK2 for a while and it was the nuts.

Normally I'd say no problem but putting pics on here is proper krypton factor. I'm sure I posted some on here years ago in a similar thread. I'll see if I can find them.

Edit: Can't find anything pre-2020 on the search but if you PM me your number I'm happy to link you to a couple of IG images that I know for sure were on the MKII. They'll obviously be massively compressed by IG so not sure how valuable it would be for you.

Yeah fair enough thanks anyway! It's no bother really, i was just intrigued about the quality compared to my dslr with the 50mm lens. Bit of a pain carrying that around.
