Hi, as title suggests is the d rig as effective with bottom baits as it is with wafters?

Personally I think not.

the D rig works best with balanced baits i.e wafters - as its designed to 'hang' underneath when the fish takes in the bait. For a heavier bottom bait i prefer more separation between hook and bait, and ideally some sort of anti-eject properties eg blowback rig.

Just my opinion though - certainly not gospel

The slip D was designed for bottom baits.

I've caught loads of fish on d rigs using a bottom bait.
I'm pretty sure that Roger Smith first used it with bottom baits and he caught one or two.

Exactly!
Roger Smith came up with the D-rig at the same time as Rod Hutchinson came up with the sliding or extending hair when Savay carp started sucking and blowing baits to test them.

I've used it for bottom baits and caught on it no problems.
I must admit it is my 'goto' pop-up presentation and also for snowman baits with fluorocarbon or Amnesia.

My go to rig for wafters or snowmen rigs. Will deffo work with bottom baits too

It will work, but I feel there is rigs better suited to take advantage of a sinking bait, I've used it with bottom baits when I've left the wafters at home though lol

You can always tie a bit of a hair to the ring on the d to give you the separation for a bottom bait. I do the same with the multi rig

Works very well

A wafter will take away some or all of the weight of the hook, however when the fish inhales a bottom bait it effectively becomes weightless anyway and the hook point swings down regardless of what type of bait you're using. Mechanically it's identical either way, just one is lighter on the inhale and possibly resets better.

I would argue that a wafter means the rig will kick out and not loop up like a bottom bait may. Do tank tests and you'll see. So always a wafter or partially balanced for me.

Yes definitely works on bottom baits. i use Dark matter coated and strip back a couple of inches so the hook section is quite flexible. micro ring swivel and floss a bait on
