I have been using large pva sticks (35mm dia.) with heavy leads (5-8 oz.) on a lead clip due to the situation I have encountered on the river I am currently fishing. I have been catching well if I can keep the lead on when the rig hits the water. I have had the lead eject on impact, lead clip arms snapping off, and the body of the clip snapping using distance lead clips with a wire arm. I am slowing the cast down as it gets to the water's surface. I have tried smaller diameter sticks, has helped but seems to have reduced the number of takes. It has gotten to point where I am thinking about going to a running rig or an inline both of which I'd prefer not use due to snags present.

Wondering if you guys have any ideas or work arounds on how to resolve this issue.

Using sticks or mesh bags means you must hit the clip to prevent the lead clip turning over as the bag hits the water. The bag creates resistance and turns the clip over.
Hitting the clip keeps the lead forward and stops the lead discharging.
You can hit the clip and then quickly unclip to let the lead and bag sinking deeper water if you need to.
The problem may be that the heavy river leads create too much of a thud when you hit the clip. If you can time the cast and the power then you should be ok.
I have used mesh occasionally with big leads when barbel fishing but always used running leads.

Leave a long tag end on the lead end of the stick/bag and wrap it around the lead swivel and front of the clip and tie a single overhand knot. This is my preferred method when casting, or even just swinging out large bags of maggots etc.
Are you sure?
