Hi chaps. I was thinking of trying the Korda 10lb tapered mainline for long range spombing. I have always used braid but am wary of the knot clattering which definitely holds back my cast. Would it be worth trying the tapered route?

How far are you looking to put the spomb?

Lots of us here go straight through with a higher breaking strain braid - 35lb - 40lb to avoid the knot and benefit well from it.


Mono for spombing can work too but you do get stretch in the line both in the cast but sometimes if the spomb gets snagged or doesn;t open etc, or the retrive isn't as crisp, especially at range

130 yards max. Not too bothered about mega accuracy as I think it's pretty unrealistic at that sort of range?

I believe the 35lb Gardner spod line is 0.30 diameter, which might be the same diameter korda tapered mainline.

could be something to consider in your choice. will prob go just as far if not further.

Will get a lot of stretch casting a heavy spomb so maybe worth considering braid straight through -get some v thin braids up to 50lb

Thanks lads. I have sort of come to the same conclusion myself over the last day or so. I have ordered a spool of Daiwa J braid in 40 pounds, which, according to tests online seems to break closer to 60. Fairly thin and hopefully will be sufficient.

I use ESP Tapered shock leaders attached to braid via a Mahin Knot. Only time i ever hear the knot hitting the eyes is on the retrieve.

Use a braid shock leader, you won't notice the knot
