I wanted to upgrade the washers in a set of baboons with carbon washers. Bought a set, replaced all the fibre ones expecting to get the same results from a set of shimanos i done a while back. But the cap didn't seem to fit as snug and expecting half a turn or so? From locked up to free spool it took about 2 and a half to 3 full turns to get the spool to remotely turn. Contacted the seller and first told me i should be happy with that and then replied again with the spool cap may have a spring in it? Which it does, and that you can replace it with a bush?? Anyone know of this or a way of getting these to work??? Cheers all.

Yes a lot of the daiwa reels came with a soft spring in the spool cap, some shimanos had a much firmer spring if fitted or came with a solid spacer.
The softer the spring the more the spool cap needs to turn before it will lock, also most of the daiwas have a 10 washer system with 5 compression fibre or felt washers the shimanos generally had a 6 washer system with 3 felt washers so this also means the shimano will have a quicker clutch in comparison as less compression over the number of felt washers.
To answer your question your spool cap more than likely has a spring in it, to access the spring you will have to split the spool cap you can do this by taking the head off the plastic retaining rivets i used to do this using a drill, some just used a soldering iron. Then the spring is replaced with a spacer or bush the same length as spring then spool cap glued back together with epoxy.
If you dont want to do this spool caps can be bought from weston developments and maybe ebay custom reel king.
If you get a spool cap without a spring and use your carbon washers you may find this now to fast but what you can do is change how many carbon washers you fit ie say 3 carbon and two felt this will now slow it down a bit etc.
